Question:

How can I use brainstorming and my imagination to answer

SCAMPER questions which will modify the characteristics of an
historical event(s) so I can deepen my understanding of the
events?

October 2016
SS2H1 The student will read about and describe the lives of
historical figures in Georgia history. a. Identify the contributions
made by these historic figures: James Oglethorpe, Tomochichi,
and Mary Musgrove (founding of Georgia); Sequoyah
(development of a Cherokee alphabet); Jackie Robinson
(sports); Martin Luther King, Jr. (civil rights); Jimmy Carter
(leadership and human rights). b. Describe how everyday life of
these historical figures is similar to and different from everyday
life in the present (food, clothing, homes, transportation,
communication, recreation, rights, and freedoms).

Procedures:
Hook:
Students will each receive a Smartie.
Students will open and examine their Smartie and the wrapping.
Explain that we are going to use a form of brainstorming to design a new
candy.
This brainstorming is called SCAMPER and each of the letters stands for
something (like USA stands for the full name of our country).
While going through each step of SCAMPER, write the modifications to the
candy on the board.
When done, ask students to rate the new candy. Would they buy it? Show the
You Tube video of the Smartie SCAMPER.

Read the Georgia Studies Weekly Georgias Story Begins.

Hand-out the Oglethorpe Scamper worksheets. Each SCAMPER letter has its
own question. Students work on one letter S or C or A, etc. After you pass out
the worksheets you will have a small group (about 3/4 students) working on
each letter.
Explain to students that they are now going to change history using the same
brainstorming technique, SCAMPER that we used for the Smarties. Write
sentences explaining your change and sketch a picture illustrating your change.
S is for Substitute. What might have happened if Oglethorpe sailed past the
Savannah River and landed in South Carolina instead?
C is for Combine. What might have happened if a Spanish explorer and James
Oglethorpe, who sailed for England came to Yamacraw Bluff at the same time?
A is for Adapt. Look at the picture of Savannah, Georgia as it was in 1734.
What could adapt or change in the colony to make it better for the settlers?
M is for modify or change. How might the history of Georgia been different if
Oglethorpe and Tomochichi had not become friends?
P is for put to another use. One main item the Creek traded was deerskin. This
item was used for moccasins and clothing. Draw a picture or diagram of five
other creative ways this item could have been used.
E is for eliminate or elaborate. Eliminate -What if Mary Musgrove was not part
of the Creek Indians and she could not translate for Tomochichi and
Oglethorpe?
R is for reverse/undo. How would building the city of Savannah been different
if the Creek Indians were not living there when Oglethorpe landed? The Creek
Indians were not around to help the English settlers get things they needed and
wanted?
With your elbow partner(s), share the changes you have made to Georgias
beginning story.
Assessment of Learning:
Formative Assessment: Walk around and see how students are responding and give
feedback as needed.
Summative Assessment:
Were students able to identify how changes they made would affect the history of
Georgia?
Assess student attitudes towards this brainstorming technique.
