Job Description:
Lucile Packard Childrens Hospital Stanford is the heart and soul of
Stanford Childrens Health. Nationally ranked and internationally
recognized, our 311-bed hospital is devoted entirely to pediatrics and
obstetrics. Our six centers of excellence provide comprehensive
services and deep expertise in key obstetric and pediatric areas: brain
and behavior, heart, pregnancy and newborn, pulmonary, and
transplant. We also provide and additional, wide range of services for
babies, children and pregnant mothers.
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Chief Pharmacy Officer
(CPO) is responsible for the design, operation, and improvement of the
medication-use process, and provides leadership and management
across the continuum of Pharmacy Services, including: the Inpatient
Pharmacy and Satellites, Outpatient Pharmacy, and Home Infusion
Pharmacy. Additionally, the CPO is accountable for the implementation
and achievement of strategic institutional objectives and goals,
optimizing resources, and maintaining compliance with all regulatory
agencies. Furthermore, the CPO will serve as a liaison to executive
leadership, acting as an advocate and ambassador of Pharmacy
Services.
Essential Functions:
Deliver compassionate and innovative care by utilizing the
Packard Quality Management System and PCARES philosophy to
create strength through open communication and problem
resolution, generate a culture of accountability, and provide
family-centered care to our patients.
Responsible for the overall operation and administration of all
LPCH Pharmacy Services, including serving as the primary
pharmacy representative on selected organizational committees
as appropriate to ensure medication-use systems and Pharmacy
Services are consistent across the continuum of care, meet the
needs of patients and the healthcare team, and assure that
issues and opportunities are addressed in a timely and effective
manner. Committee requirements include, but are not limited to

the Medical Executive Committee, Pharmacy and Therapeutics


Committee, and the Safe Medication Practices Committee.
Identify and coordinate the implementation of specific targeted
initiatives and the integration of medication-use systems and
Pharmacy Services across the spectrum of LPCH services.
Identify and implement appropriate metrics consistently across
the institution to measure quality outcomes, allowing the
development of performance improvement initiatives to enhance
quality outcomes.
Ensure compliance with all regulatory and accreditation
requirements.
Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with the Chief
Operating Officer and other members of executive leadership,
Medical Directors, the Medical Staff, Nursing Leadership, and
other patient care leaders to ensure the safety, effectiveness and
quality of Pharmacy Services.
Ensures the financial performance of the department is within
approved budgets and develops annual budgets while monitoring
and managing department revenues and expenses.
Identifies, develops, implements and revises physical facility,
equipment, information systems, and other non-personnel needs
to effectively support Pharmacy Services.
Ensures the Department employs a sufficient number of
pharmacy personnel with the appropriate education, licensing,
certification, experience and training to provide appropriate
medication management and performance of all other job
functions and activities as defined by the Department, the
Organization, regulations and statutes, regulatory bodies, and
accreditation and professional organization standards.
Monitors and reports trends in drug utilization to the
administration and clinical staff as appropriate, and develops
drug utilization initiatives which optimize therapeutic outcomes,
reduce risk, and/or have financial impacts.
Meets population-specific and competencies according to
Department requirements.
Directs and coordinates the development and implementation of
education programs and activities for pharmacy staff.
Promotes a culture of safety by adhering to policies, procedures,
and plans in place to prevent workplace injury, violence, or
adverse outcomes to patients and staff.
All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide


the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as possession of
any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Education:
Graduate of a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Pharmacy program. Masters
of Science (MS) in Pharmacy, Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD), or Masters
of Business Administration (MBA), or completion of a PGY-1 and/or PGY2 Residency is preferred.
Experience:
A minimum of five to ten years of progressively responsible experience
in pharmacy leadership in an academic medical center or large,
complex teaching hospital; preferably experience in a center offering
pediatric services.
Licensure/Certification:
Current license to practice as a Registered Pharmacist in the State of
California
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledgeable about the pharmaceutical supply chain, clinical
therapeutics, human resources management, and budget
management.
Ability to develop and implement a strategic shared vision for
Pharmacy Services.
Proven leadership skills in relationship to motivating and
empowering staff.
