A three hinged parabolic arch has a span of 30 m and central rise of 6 m. Five wheel
loads of 4 kN, 5 kN, 3 kN, 5 kN, 3 kN spaced 3 m, 2 m, 3 m and 2 m in order, cross
the arch from left to right with 4 kN load leading. When leading load is 20 m from left
hinge, calculate horizontal thrust and bending moment at the tail load.

(a) Define shape factor and upper bound theorem.


(b) A mild steel section 200 mm wide and 250 mm deep has a mean flange thickness
of 20 mm and web thickness of 10 mm. Calculate fully plastic moment and shape
factor. Take = 250 N/mm2 .
(c) State the assumptions of fully plastic moment of a section.

A two hinged parabolic arch of span 30 m and rise 6 m carries uniformly distributed
load of 8 kN/m on the left 9 m length. Calculate the bending moment at 8 m from the
left support using influence lines.

Determine the forces in the members of truss shown in figure given below using
stiffness matrix method. All members have equal cross sectional area of 1200 mm2
and E = 210 GPa.

spacing. The central dip of cable is 2 m. Find the length of cable required and also
area, is safe tensile stress is 750 N/mm2.

A three hinged parabolic arch has span 25 m and central rise 5 m. Three wheel loads
50 kN, 100 kN and 150 kN spaced at 3 m and 2 m respectively, cross the arch from
right to left with 50 kN leading. Calculate horizontal thrust, bending moment and
radial shear when leading load is 10 m from left support.
