Reflection Journal Week 2
1. Overview
Our lesson today consisted of 20 3rd grade students out at Cleveland Elementary.
Our focus was on football passing, catching, and running routes. The previous
learnt skills for this lesson were throwing a football, catching a football, and
teamwork skills. The required equipment was 20 poly spots, 9 cones, 5 poly
hands, and 5 footballs.
2. Student Learning Outcomes
A. The student learning outcomes for this lesson were to be able to complete a
pass using one of the three routes 6/10 times, explain the three routes
learned today with 100% accuracy, and to be engaged in 50% MVPA during
the lesson.
B. According to the data I gathered, we fell just a bit short of reaching 50%
MVPA for the lesson. We spent about 41% of the lesson on activity, which is a
decent number for where we are in the semester. From my own personal
observations of the skills being learned during this lesson, around 2/3 of the
class was able to complete the psychomotor objective for this lesson.
Students were able to run the three routes correctly and completed passes
around 50% of the time. Not every student could distinguish between the
three with 100% accuracy though.

C. I would have changed my instant activity to something a little less chaotic. Ive
had trouble with tag games because they are hard to keep everyone
organized and it causes the students to get a bit wild. Once this shift happens
the management becomes more difficult than it already is. I thought the
lesson core activities were solid for the students who participated. The most
difficult part is transitioning to something new. The first activity usually goes
well, but the second activity takes really long to get into.
3. Creating a Quality Learning Environment
A. I thought there was far too much management to provide an excellent
learning experience. Mondays lesson went far more smoothly than
Wednesdays lesson and there was much less management. Student
motivation coming in was low and multiple students sat out during the lesson.
The ones who did participate did an excellent job with the activities. I need to
find strategies to try and limit the amount of management in the lesson.
B. During Wednesdays lesson our lesson had 39% of the time spent on activity,
20% spent on instruction, and 41% spent on management. I think the most
important step for this ratio is to lower the management and increase the
activity. In order to do that I need to do a better job of transitioning between
activities and getting students attention. I think this will happen in time as the
class gets used to our routines and develops better habits when it comes to
behavior. There have been improvements from specific students, but there
are some that continue to have poor behavior.
C. I felt that students had the opportunity to perform the routes and skills at a
high level, but they can be their own worst enemy at times. The students dont
always listen to directions well, and if I take too long explaining the activities

their attention span shortens by the second, so I end up explaining the activity
again during it. This lack of attention causes the class to take longer to get
into activity than it should. Once activity is taking place students are
performing well with a few exceptions obviously. I also group students with
people that they are both comfortable with and at similar skill levels so they
are confident in their ability to work together and perform the movements.
D. I thought I provided students the opportunity to progress their skills in
Wednesdays lesson. They learned how to use previously learnt skills in an
applicable way through running football routes. This is an important step
towards gameplay and learning the ability to attempt to catch a ball with
purpose and strategy as well. We then extended the task and added a
defender as well. This gives students the opportunity to apply their knowledge
of movement concepts while playing against another student. This use of
strategy is important in their development in physical education.
4. Strengths and Weaknesses
A. Whenever I was delivering instruction I stood directly in front of the students. I
believe this is important when teaching content because all of the students
can see me from this view. During the instant activity I walked around the
perimeter so I wasnt caught in the crossfire of the tag game. One thing I
could improve with this is standing in the middle inbetween rounds of sharks
and minnows (or cookie monster) in order to gather everyones attention and
calm the students a bit. During the activities I walked throughout the learning
space and gave feedback where possible.
B. I did provide COTS for the routes performed today. The students seemed to
pick up on them fairly well but they struggled with the slant route. Running at

an angle then catching wasnt something they were picking up quickly and I
had to reteach it a couple times to certain groups of students. They picked up
the hook quite easily though.
C. My instructions werent as quick as Id like them to be but thats because it
was difficult to get everyones attention at once. Even though I took my time
giving directions it still took students several minutes to understand what was
happening.
D. I provided feedback throughout the lesson. I did my best to commend those
who were giving good effort in hopes that other students would follow that
example and want praise themselves. I also gave a lot of corrective feedback
to students who were struggling with the content. I felt like I should have given
more group feedback to the entire class, but it is hard to assemble everyone
at once and get their undivided attention.
E. I provided demonstrations for each lesson core activity. The demonstrations
prior to the activities I used my ET Chris so we ensured we had a proper
demonstration that set a good example. After the lesson commenced I used
to students to demonstrate the different routes we practiced for the day.
Students struggled with the slant routes and I would have liked to pause
activity for a moment to demonstrate the route again, but like I said before it is
difficult to have everyones attention all at once. The students who
demonstrated after the lesson reciprocated the movements fairly well.
F. We didnt have too much difficulty with equipment for todays lesson. The poly
spots have become both helpful and an issue. At the beginning of each
lesson it gives students a place to sit but they tend to move around

throughout the lesson which causes problems. Equipment was handled well
during the lesson core activities though and transitions were better.
G. There was quite a bit of disruptive behavior during todays class. It really only
took place before and after the lesson. The students really struggled with
staying composed and listening to directions after class had ended. Four
students also chose to sit out during the lesson. While this behavior may not
be disruptive it is a bad example and it shouldnt be permitted. They refused
to rejoin the lesson and it could cause problems going forward.
H. I thought I could have been more enthusiastic during this teach. Its hard
when the students dont always give you the respect you want, but thats
when I need to be the most enthusiastic and try to earn their respect.
I. The three teaching skills I thought I did well on this week were
demonstrations, feedback, and positive reinforcement of good behaviors. The
three skills I want to work on for next week are management, organization,
and student accountability.
5. Recommendations
A. For next weeks lessons I think I really need to be as enthusiastic as possible
and try to increase the morale of the class as much as possible. This week
was better than week 1, but in order to continue the upward trend I need to up
my game too.
B. I think the content for next week should be another traditional sport to keep
their interest for now but have very skill driven lessons. I want to make the
lessons as organized as possible so that students have less options for bad
behavior.
