There are a variety of pokemon trainers across the

world. A Trainer can be a specialist in a particular
field, or a generalist able to do a little bit of everything.
Breeder: Pokemon Breeders raise pokemon to know
specific abilities and attacks. They will often breed
higher level pokemon to get a stronger offspring.
When a breeder decides to adventure, they do so with
a pokemon theyve carefully bred to reach their goals.
Coordinator: These pokemon trainers aim to have the
most attractive pokemon for their focus, whether that
be physical, special, or general. In battle,
Coordinators are tougher than they may seem; having
learned how to press an advantage or come back from
what may seem as a losing position.
Handler: As a pokemon trainer, a handler has a
stronger focus on training the pokemon for the sake of
it. Sanctioned battle and travel is often only another
way to train the handlers pokemon for a specific task.
Ranger: Pokemon rangers are elite soldiers in the eyes
of other pokemon trainers. Having spent much time
on the field even before they capture their first
pokemon with their customized stylus, the ranger is a
unique battler whos often out adventuring to further
pokemon and help others.
Researcher: When choosing pokemon, researchers try
to make their choice from a variety of pokemon, weak
or strong, and focus training those pokemon to learn
what can make them stronger and how to shore up
their deficiencies.
Rescuer: Pokemon rescuers are unique in that the
pokemon have no actual trainer. These pokemon
usually just travel in small groups of about six and
seek to right wrongs while adventuring. Pokemon
rescuers will almost always have a leader amongst
them who can communicate with real trainers.
Trainer: As the penultimate generalist of the pokemon
trainers, the trainer is usually just a kid whos picked
up his first pokemon out of his hometown and seeks to
learn all he can about pokemon as he adventures.
Watcher: Pokemon watchers usually have fewer
pokemon compared to others, as they prefer to study
pokemon in a more natural environment. The watcher
keeps pokemon often only out of necessity.

HIGHER STAGE POKEMON

Second and third stage pokemon are stronger than their
counterparts. You gain access to these pokemon at the
levels indicated in their prerequisites.
Weapon and Implement Attacks Translated
Weapon attacks become physical attacks with [A]
instead of [W]. Implement attacks become special
attacks, but are otherwise unchanged. Utility powers
become general powers.
What it means to get a higher stage pokemon
Obtaining a higher stage of pokemon could mean a
number of things.
Evolution: You could have evolved your pokemon
into the new one as it progressed in level. The evolved
pokemon begins to further specialize itself in what its
able to do.
Trade: You may have traded your original pokemon
with another trainer for the new one. The new
pokemon happens to have several traits it shares with
your original, representing the base features you picked
in the beginning.
Capture: Maybe youve captured a new pokemon
which just happens to be stronger than your current one.
Youre able to adapt your training to the new pokemon
quickly and it learns much of its features and abilities
from the previous pokemon.
Breed: Maybe youve bred your pokemon and have
now obtained this new pokemon which knows most of
what the last one did and is ready to begin its own
progress.

later. Paragon multiclassing counts as a stage 2

pokemon, so the trainer can later obtain another stage 2
pokemon or a stage 3 pokemon.

IVYSAUR
When the bud on its back starts swelling, a sweet aroma
wafts to indicate the flower's coming bloom.
Prerequisites: 11th level
Stage: 2
Equivalent Paragon Path: Iron Vanguard

VENUSAUR
After a rainy day, the flower on its back smells
stronger. The scent attracts other Pokmon.
Prerequisites: 21st level
Stage: 3
Equivalent Paragon Path: Dreadnought

Mechanically, this helps to explain paragon

multiclassing and choosing different paragon paths. If
you want a faster mewtwo at level 26, youll probably
want to start by training other fast pokemon like rattata
and Pikachu. In the case of Pikachu, you could even
evolve it to raichu at level 11 to make it faster, then
apply those stats to mewtwo when you capture it later.
Pokemon can have two paragon paths
Second and third stage pokemon count as paragon
paths. Since pokemon dont get epic destinies (they do,
but the story representation is that the destiny applies to
the trainer), they instead get access to 2 paragon paths.
This also means a pokemon can paragon multiclass into
another pokemon class and still take a paragon path

TRAINER POINTS (TP)
Trainer points are the assumed currency of pokemon
4e. They encompass actual money as well as the
expenditure of effort to train the pokemon. Basically,
every 1 tp in pokemon is the equivalent of 1gp (gold
piece) in D&D.
Basic defenses, attacks, and how tp affects them
When a trainer teaches a pokemon a different basic
attack or raises that pokemons defense score, it takes
effort on the trainers part that cannot be used for
anything else, thus the cost in trainer points reflects this
effort. As a trainer gains experience, the amount of

effort needed to advance his pokemon increases

significantly. Thankfully, the trainer is usually better
prepared to make the effort (simulating a rise in
cost/gold available).
Accessories and how tp affects them
Purchasing items to either increase the effectiveness of
your pokemon, or to give it an edge in niche situations,
also requires trainer points. This is because you are
allocating time to finding, buying, and using the item
on your pokemon, instead of training it personally.
This also holds true for breeding centers and daycares.
When your pokemon comes out, you pay an appropriate
cost in trainer points to the center as recompense for the
training provided during that time.

Defense: Each pokemon has a maximum defense

score, similar to Armor in D&D. A trainer can increase
the pokemons maximum defense score by giving the
pokemon Iron (see Renamed feats). At the levels
indicated, a trainer can increase the defense granted by
the pokemons defense score. This is done by
expending the required trainer points.

Basic Attacks and Egg Moves Explained

In D&D terms, Basic attacks account for simple and
military melee and ranged weapons. Egg moves, by
contrast, are superior weapons. Each pokemon starts
with one or more attacks they can learn, and can gain
access to others by taking the Technical Machine feat
(see Renamed feats). All pokemon ranged attacks are
considered thrown, and therefore require Strength to
make them. The melee training feat in pokemon allows
the pokemon to change the attack stat of all basic
attacks and egg moves, instead of just melee.
Instead of drawing weapons in pokemon, the pokemon
prepares a basic attack or egg move. Preparing an
attack is otherwise identical to drawing a weapon.

Properties
Properties in pokemon work exactly as one would
expect in D&D.
The following new properties are used in pokemon.
Light: Replaces off-hand as a property, but functions
in an identical way. A pokemon can prepare a regular
attack and a light attack or two light attacks at the same
time. It can also prepare a strong attack and a light
attack, but cannot gain the +1 bonus to damage that
comes with ignoring block value. A pokemon cannot
prepare a light attack when it has a powerful attack
prepared, and vice versa.
Powerful: Replaces two-handed as a weapon type, but
functions in an identical way. A pokemon gains no
benefit from any block value when it has a powerful
attack prepared.
Recharge: Replaces reload as a property, but functions
in an identical way. The pokemon must expend a
period of time before it can use the attack again. This
does not mean it has to prepare again.
Strong: Replaces versatile as a property, but functions
in an identical way. A pokemon with block value +1
can forego that value in lieu of +1 damage while the
strong attack is prepared. The choice is a free action.
A pokemon with a block value of +2 can do the same,
but it requires a minor action to do so.
