I. General Introduction:
The senior design project course by itself provides an integrated assessment of the
progress of the students toward the desired civil engineering competency. It is therefore
important to design fair and broad guidelines for better assessment of this course. A
senior design project in the Department of Civil Engineering is a two-semester course in
which students form teams usually of 4 to 6 members, select a design project and are
supervised by a faculty member. The first semester, of the two-semester sequence, can
start in the fall of an academic year. The students are expected to discuss their progress
with their supervisors in regular weekly meetings. The students submit a written report,
present and defend their work at the end of the project.
The main purpose of the project is to improve the students' technical skills,
communication skills by integrating writing, presentation and teamwork opportunities.
The design project is comprehensive and focuses on professional practice and includes a
variety of non-technical issues such as economic factors, safety, reliability, environment
and social impacts.
The topics are normally chosen by the department faculty members. During the summer
training course, the student(s) can also choose the topic of the design project; the
selected topic should meet the requirements for CE Senior Project. The students are
required to demonstrate their ability to: conduct a literature survey; perform the relevant
calculations, propose a solution to the problem, and implement their design.
Externally sponsored projects are welcome and benefit the industry and guarantee a
strong educational experience for our students. Sponsored projects can be tailored to
meet the requirements for CE Senior Project students.
This report presents guidelines for the management and assessment of projects carried
out inside and outside the university including the sponsored ones.
II. Steps to assign a senior project:
Students are expected to register for the senior project with a faculty member whose
specialty and interests are compatible with the preferred topic of his project. Students
may find a senior project supervisor by meeting with individual faculty members prior
to the beginning of the term and receiving their approval as a supervisor. To assign a
senior project, student(s)/faculty/sponsored company should go through the following
steps:
Senior Project Assessment
If a change is made, draw a line through the original entry and clearly indicate what
the change is and why it was made.
The most important rule to remember is: when it comes to what you must record; simply
record everything. Although each project team needs to discuss with the project
supervisor exactly what he expects from the log book.
Keep a detailed record for all phases of the project. Project supervisors should
review and sign the log book at regular intervals during the two semesters.
Be aware that the supervisor can request to look at the log book without any notice.
Therefore, students have to make sure that their log books are up-to-date. One
handy hint; when you are first using your log book, start on page 4, as you can then
use pages 1-3 for your index.
Use the log book as a design tool; enter everything in there, no matter how
irrelevant you might think it is. Every day, write what youve done detailing all
your ideas and keep a record of your successes and problems.
Finally, when the project is completed, each team should handle their own log book to
the supervisor along with the final project report.
IX. Marking & Assessing the Senior Design Project Course:
Assessing the students' abilities to problem solving and effectiveness in expressing ideas
in oral and written communication can be done by examining the proposed designs
described in the report, and observing the oral presentation. By considering the scope
and depth of the students' treatments of all issues related to the design project, the
faculty is able to assess the students' abilities to consider wider environmental issues
which often accompany civil engineering practice.
At the end of this course, a progress report should be written in which the problem
statement, design concept, simulation work and hardware concept are clearly described.
Students will prepare an oral presentation. Assessment at this level is based on the
senior project proposal submitted at the beginning of the course. Examiners will
evaluate and present constructive criticism and suggestions to help improve and develop
the project. Table 1 shows a marking for the assessment of the senior design I.

B - Marking & Assessing the Senior Design II (CE 4333):
At the end of this course, each project group will write a final report, prepare an oral
presentation and demonstrate their final product. By reading the report, observing the
presentation and inspecting the realized project, the faculty should be able to assess the
written and oral communication skills as well as the problem-solving skills of the
students. For fair assessment of senior design II, Table 2 shows a possible breakdown of
marks for the Senior Design II course.

Course Objectives:
Students must be prepared for engineering practice through the curriculum culminating in a major
design experience based on the knowledge and skills required in earlier course work and incorporating
engineering standards and realistic constraints that take into account considerations such as: economic;
environmental; safety; manufacturability; ethical; and social aspects. The objectives of this course:
1. Students can select and plan an engineering project involving analysis and design tasks
2. Students can conduct a literature survey
3. Students can carry out, as a team, civil engineering design
4. Students can perform the relevant calculations, analysis, and implement his design.
