CHAPTER THREE

3:0 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3:1 RESEARCH DESIGN
Research design is a kind of blue print that guides the researchers in his or her
investigation and analysis. It is a format which the researcher employs in order to
systematically apply the scientific method in the Investigation of problem (Onwumere,
2005).
Methodology is the heart of scientific studies as It is the Chapter that

answers

the

question How to carry out a study. Research methodology therefore shows how the
writer Intends to gather data and the various procedures that would be adopted

in

analyzing the numerous data so obtain in the course of the study. It is also defined as
the techniques and method of arriving at reliable conclusion from studies carried out.
The purpose of this research is only
ascertain if there is such a hidden

to investigate a problem situation but also to

but Identifiable

illness

operating

behind

the

already perceived symptoms Eli(1979:5).

2

The methodology for this Research work is the chi-square( x ) technique where survey
analytical and experimental design.
3:2 NATURE AND SOURCE OF DATA
For any Research project to be carried out,

Hoper (1977:169)

states

that

Data

Information must be collected.

There are Basically Two (2) Types of data collection method :

1. Primary data collection method and
2. Secondary data collection method
Primary data is a data expressly collected for a specific period and purpose, the
main advantage of primary data is that the exact information wanted is obtained. Though
it suffers from problems like objective of the respondent, it is still one of

the

best

methods of getting first hand information. This enables respondents to give details to the
questions they were asked in their own words and understanding.
Secondary data refers to already existing data that has been stored, like (relevant
textbooks, Journals, Magazines, Newspapers, Paper presentations and Internet). So primary
and secondary data will be used in this study, primary involved personal Interview i.e.
face to face interpersonal relationship between

the interviewee and

interviewer and

supported by the use of structured questionnaire.

QUESTIONNAIRE CONSTRUCTION
The researcher made use of questionnaire in the collection of data, but here the
researcher dominantly made use of the structured questionnaire. Questionnaire according to
Saliu (2004) is a common instrument of investigation in a social science. For

instance

simple alternative or multiple choice of responses of 2 (Two) point of scale of AGREE

or DISAGREE were made available for the respondent to

tick.

These information

respondents according to Sex, Age, Marital status and Educational Qualification.

3:3 POPULATION OF THE STUDY

Research population according to Osuala (2005), refers

to the object for

which a

sample is drawn. The population of the study consist the core banking staff of ACCESS
BANK AT GARDEN AVENUE ENUGU BRANCH. It comprises of men and women of
the institution, It consist of 37 staff.
3:4

DETERMATION OF SAMPLING SIZE

Against this backdrop, the sample size was determined via the use of formula given
by Taro Yamani: (1964 :12)
N=

Where N = Total population

n= Sample size
e = Error limit / of significance maximum acceptance ( 5% = 0.05)
I = Constant
The sample size is completed thus

n= 33.86
Approximately 34 (sample size)

So the sample Techniques was to obtain a sample size of 34 respondents.

RELIABILITY OF INSTRUMENT
A test re test technique helps so much to attain the reliability of the questionnaire,
most of the respondent who have earlier completed the questionnaire were asked to
complete it again as part of standardization of the questionnaire to avoid mistake.
3 :5 METHOD OF DATA ANALYSIS
In testing the various hypothesis, the chi square ( x

) statistic was employed. The

computed ( X) Chi square is derived as follows :

2

X =

Where X

= chi square

= Summation (sigma)
Fij = Observed frequency
eji= expected frequency

Hence, the expected frequency is determined with the formula eji =

Where Ri = the row total

Ci= the column total
N = The grand total

The tabular x (x 0.05 ) is observed from the Chi square distribution at ( r 1 ) (k 1

) degree of freedom where r is the number of rows and k is the number of columns in
the contingency table. The computed chi square (x
2

) is computed with the tabular chi

2

square (x 0.05) to evaluate the hypothesis of x > x 0.05.

CHAPTER FOUR
4:0 DATA PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS
This chapter is concerned with the Presentation Analysis and Interpretation of data
collected so as to facilitate easy understanding. A total number of 34 Questionnaire were
administered to the respondents and all were duly received. The simple percentage
formula is employed in analyzing the data collected i.e.
% = F (
Where % = percentage distribution of frequency.
F = frequency of responses.
f = sum of responses.

CHAPTER FIVE
5:0 SUM MARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
5.1 SUM MARY OF FINDINGS
Information and Communication Technology has already become the nervous system
of the banks the world over. As we move into the new Millennium, Nigeria banks will
become uncompetitive if they do not have the means to deliver their banking services
online and in real time across all their branches with the country and abroad. They
need to Invest a lot more on Information and Communication Technology both in terms
of Installed base, staffing and training of

Information

and

Communication Technology

staffs, as well as the training of all categories of the bank staff to become (ICT)
literate.
This Research work was embarked upon in order to look into the Impact of Information
and Communication Technology on Banking sector. However based on the data

Analysis

carried out in chapter 4 (Four)

To ascertain the degree of acceptance

of

information

and

communication

Technology in the banking sector which is widely accepted by management of

the banks sector.
The contributions of information and communication technology to the growth of
the banking sector, which has brought about revolutions in the economy, since
payments method which include the use of credit cards, electronic transfer of
funds from one bank to another, smart cards widely used in supermarkets and
other retail outlets contributions to the economys growth and development and
6
1

their contribution helps to reduces operational cost in Areas such as personal

management, administration, maintenance etc
Information and Communication Technology has enhanced efficiency in Banking
sector, through the use of ATM, smart cards, reduction in the
business in banks and

speeding up or fasting

cost

of

doing

up the whole banking process

through the use of computerized machines.

5.2 CONCLUSIONS
Information and Communication Technology departments in banks also
roles in the banking sector like helping in critical area such as

play some

End-user

technical

supports, Desktops management, Network management, voice and data communications,

business applications and strategic technology planning. Information and Communication
Technology(ICT) has helped in reducing the cost of doing business in banks, banks all
over the world are involved in certain time consuming and routine task on a daily basis
and it dependent on internet banking to ensure that such technology is not abused and
not used to encourage fraudulent and unethical banking practices, various standards have
been set in the guidelines to which such technology must conform.
Finally, banks must ensure that the Internet service provider(ISP) has implemented
firewall to protect the banks website from unauthorized users and banks are also to
ensure that they are properly configured and institute procedure for continued monitoring
and maintenance arrangements.

5.3 RECOMMENDATIONS
Knowing full well that information and communication technology cannot be separated
from the banking sector due to its immense contributions to the banking sector, and
based on the respective responses gathered from the

sample

and

contribution

from

authorities, the researcher therefore makes the following recommendation with the intent
that if adopted would have positive effects on the banking sectors.
The banks should improve more on its information technology so as to enhance
its productivity.
The use of (ICT) in the banking sector should not only be restricted to the cities
alone, rural banking should also be improved upon.
From time to time there should be enlightenment given to the general

public

through the various media on how to use some of the (ICT) equipments like the
smart cards, ATM etc and its importance should also be made

known

to

the

public.
Staff should be used side by side with ICT rather than reducing human capital
which will in turn lead to unemployment in the country.
