or one reason and another, I have had quite a lot

to do with St. Damien of Molokai, Damien of the
Lepers. I was fortunate to be at a mass at his crypt in
Leuven, Belgium on the day of his canonisation,
October 11th 2009, and visited Molokai with some
friends on my first trip to Hawaii. But there is not just
Damien, there is also Marianne Cope of Molokai, also
a saint (canonised October 21st 2012), who nursed
Damien in his final illness and took over from him
afterwards. On my second trip to Hawaii, we visited a
shrine dedicated to her honour, just off Waikiki Beach,
which told her story in words and documents and
pictures.

t wasn't just that Damien risked becoming a leper

for the sake of caring for the lepers when no one
else would.
It started well before that, in his
willingness to be cut off with them from the rest of
Hawaii, from the rest of society and culture and
civilisation, to put himself into quarantine to tend to
those in quarantine. This helps to explain why in our
gospel the emphasis is placed on the lepers getting
'cleansed' or 'made clean' rather than just cured. As
lepers they were unclean and therefore had to live
outside the camp. They wanted to be able to get
back with their husbands and wives, mothers and
fathers, children and grandchildren, to get back to
their village and their synagogue and their daily job, to
get their lives back. If anything, this was even more
important than the healing. And this is what Jesus
gives them. This then links up with the death of
Jesus, the most unclean of all deaths, crucified
outside the walls, Jesus becoming himself a leper for
the sake of all the lepers and of everyone else as well,
an exchange anticipated in fact in one of the earlier
leper stories (Mk 1: 40-45).

ut this is just the beginning of a reflection on the

gospel. Our Gospel today is very much a story
about borders and boundaries. Jesus is traveling
along the border between Samaria and Galilee, a
cultural and religious as well as geographical
boundary between Samaritans/foreigners as Jesus
calls them, and Jews. Compare the parable of the
Good Samaritan, and also the Samaritan woman in
John. There, in this border region, he runs into ten
lepers, on the other side of another boundary we have
already spoken of, just as big, maybe even bigger,
between clean and unclean, all excluded from their
own communities and families and their own religion.
As it turns out, this is itself a mixed group, in which the
boundaries are already crossed, Jews and
Samaritans together in the one community of
suffering. The Good News that Jesus comes to bring

and to make real is that there is a community of

integral healing and salvation to match this community
of suffering, that the Hospitality of God that Jesus
brings reaches across all borders and boundaries and
barriers. This in turn is something of which the cure of
Naaman the leper in the first reading is a prefiguring.
Naaman of course is also a foreigner...

ut there is one border which proves to be very

difficult in this particular case, and in respect of
which Jesus has only limited success, that is in
undoing the inner boundaries, the ties that bind the
heart and the spirit, only one of them turned back
praising God at the top of his voice, only one of
them gets to have the full cure, the fullness of what
Jesus wants to bring also to us. This ecstatic, fully
saved, Eucharistic person, jumping out of his skin,
fully set free, this is what we are all called to be,
across all boundaries and barriers, in the Feast in the
Kingdom of Heaven. Indeed, in anticipation of the
Feast we get to be already Eucharistic people, across
all boundaries and barriers and distinctions, joining
the angels and saints, and our fully saved Samaritan
leper, in our ecstasy of praise and thanksgiving
I think things are now back to normal for a while,
though I am not sure! It would help, though, if I could
skip the morning mass on Wednesday, with John
doing Carinya, otherwise I am down and back to and
from Cairns two days in a row. With thanks and
appreciation to all those who kept things going while I
touched really good base with family.

A Walk Through the Mass: A Step-by-Step

Part three: Meal sharing
After the readings, we move to the table. As at a meal
in the home of a friend, we 1) set the table, 2) say
grace and 3) share the food (we eat and drink). At
Mass these ritual actions are called 1) the Preparation
of the Gifts, 2) the Eucharistic Prayer, 3) the
Communion Rite.
Preparation of the Gifts
The early Christians each brought some bread and
wine from their homes to the church to be used for
the Mass and to be given to the clergy and the poor.
Today a similar offering for the parish and the poor is
made with our monetary contributions. Members of
the parish will take up a collection from the assembly
and bring it to the priest at the altar with the bread
and wine to be used for the sacrifice. The priest places
the bread and wine on the table. He then mixes water
with the wine and washes his hands to help us think of
the Last Supper. (Mixing water with wine and washing
hands are things all Jews did at meals in Jesus day.)
Finally, he invites us to pray that the sacrifice be
acceptable to God. We respond Amen to the Prayer
Over the Gifts and stand to participate in the central
prayer of the Mass.

The Gospel story about Jesus encounter with the 10 lepers is a
fitting one to hear as we prepare to hear about the work made
possible by Catholic Mission, around the world. There is an
encounter, between those in need and a person who can offer
some healing, support and encouragement; there is a sense of an
outsider, the 10th leper who returns to give thanks, calling upon
someone of faith, Jesus, and being rewarded for that openness and
trust; and finally, there is life and healing, at a time when the
circumstances seemed to suggest otherwise. This is what Mission
is all about: reaching out and bringing peace and life. On behalf of
all those who will be healed, and the missionaries who bring such
healing, let Catholic Mission be like that 10th leper and say thank
you,
for
your
generosity and
your
faithfulness.
