SUMMARY
Chicamtoltina stream flows through the city of Alta Gracia from west to
southeast, finishing up in Anisacate river, one of the affluents of Segundo river basin.
An important feature of this stream is that downstream from the city of Alta Gracia it
receives effluents from the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of that city.
Given that, in most cases, these discharges have an impact on the aquatic
ecosystem by incorporating high loads of organic matter, nutrients, microorganisms,
among other substances, and that the stream near the confluence with Anisacate river
has a recreational use, the objective of this project was to understand the impact of the
effluent discharge by the determination of kinetic parameters associated with
autodepuration processes in a reach of the stream.
Therefore, the reaeration rate coefficient (K2) was obtained through the
modified tracer-gas method, using propane as volatile tracer and sodium chloride as
conservative tracer. This determination involved conducting a basic hydraulic and
topographic survey of the riverbed, the determination of the hydrodynamic
characteristics of the section and the performance of preliminary tests with tracers for
the purposes of programming the final test.
Simultaneously, the "bottle" carbonaceous deoxygenation rate constant (1)
and the organic matter removal rate constant () were determined for the study reach.
For this purpose, water samples were taken and the concentration of dissolved oxygen
and biochemical oxygen demand in time were obtained by applying standardized
techniques.
Finally, the kinetic constants and the data gathered in the field were used in the
water quality model RIOS IV (v4.0) to predict the variation of dissolved oxygen and
biochemical oxygen demand along the stream in different scenarios.
The results showed that the effluent discharge has a negative impact on the
stream, at least during the winter period. However, if during that season the wastewater
discharge by the WWTP Alta Gracia fulfill the requirements of BOD5 of Provincial
Decree N 415/99, the autodepuration process of the stream partially achieved would
avoid a condition of hypoxia in the reach studied.
