Books
Grove, George. Beethoven and His Nine Symphonies. London: Novello and Company, 1896.
This text is divided into several sections: a list of works, a section for each of Beethoven's
symphonies, a few sections on events related to their composition or performance, and an index.
The background and analysis of each symphony is accompanied by examples from the score and
information from other sources, cited in footnotes. This source, while dated, will be useful for its
theoretical and thematic analysis of Beethoven's 3rd symphony, and its relation to his first two
symphonies.
Simpson, Robert. Beethoven Symphonies. Seattle, WA: University of Washington Press, 1971.
This text has a section for each of Beethoven's symphonies, and unfortunately no index. It
contains musical examples and analysis for each work. Since this source is more recent than
Beethoven and His Nine Symphonies, it will serve to compliment the information in that text
from a more modern perspective.
Floros, Constantin. Beethoven's Eroica - Thematic Studies. New York : Peter Lang, 2013.
This source contains several sections on different aspects of Eroica, an extensive bibliography,
musical examples, illustrations, and an index. The text examines the programmatic nature of the
symphony, and uses many sources from Beethoven's period, as well as modern commentary.
There's a lot in this source that doesn't relate to my paper, but several sections do, and the
bibliography will help me continue my research as I add even more sources to my bibliography.

Burnham, Scott. "On the Programmatic Reception of Beethoven's Eroica Symphony." Beethoven
Forum (University Of Nebraska Press) 1.1 (January 1992), 1-24.
The text examines several programmatic analyses of Eroica, citing the works of many music
theorists and historians. It should lend a helpful analysis of one of the symphony's important
characteristics.
Downs, Philip G. "Beethoven's 'New Way' and the 'Eroica'." The Musical Quarterly 56.4
(October 1970), 585-604.
This text examines the change in Beethoven's compositional style after the Heiligenstadt
Testament, and how Eroica was different from his previous symphonies. A mostly theoretical
analysis is supplemented by some references to Beethoven's writings and the writings of
historians.
Earp, Lawrence. "Tovey's 'Cloud' in the First Movement of the Eroica." Beethoven Forum
(University of Nebraska Press) 2.1 (January 1993), 25-54.
This source is an analysis of the first movement of Eroica. It references Beethoven's sketches of
the development and coda, as well as examining a Schenkerian analysis of the movement.

Sheer, Miriam. "Patterns of Dynamic Organization in Beethoven's Eroica Symphony." The

Journal of Musicology 10.4 (Autumn 1992), 483-504.
This source contains a very mathematical and structured analysis of the dynamics in Eroica. The
hierarchical organisation of dynamics is part of a comprehensive analysis of the what sets this
symphony apart, and I have not found this approach in other sources.
