 MS-Environmental Economics
For the su stainable econom ic d evelopm ent, for the
cu rrent and fu tu re generations, profou nd know led ge of
the issu es of Environm ent and Resou rce Use is critical.
The aim of the teaching program m e in Environm ental
Econom ics is to create awareness and train the stu d ents,
researchers and practitioners to cond u ct research, using
the concepts and tools of econom ics, on issu es related to
Environmental Economics and Climate Change.
The teaching cu rriculum focu ses on d eveloping the role
and application of econom ic approaches for
environm ental issu es, essential featu res of the m arket
m echanism to control environm ental d egrad ation for
su stainable econom ic d evelopm ent, the natu re and
treatm ent of environm ental effects in econom ic reasoning
and d ecision-m aking, and the application of
environm ental p olicy instru m ents based on econom ic
analysis. The cou rse w ork is based on contem porary
environm ental m anagem ent approaches (e.g. ecological
m od ernization, ecological econom ics, and ind u strial
ecology) w ith su bstantial (physical) econom y
dimensions.
Keeping in view the current lack of aw areness and
know led ge of Environm ental issu es, the MS-
Environmental Economics Programme is designed to:
Im part a sou nd u nd erstand ing of the nexu s
between the economy and the environment;
Teach m ajor concepts and theories to explain and
d escribe the econom ic behaviou r of hu m an beings
and its impact on the environment.
Ou tline and contrast the m ajor econom ic schools of
thou ght on the environm ent, and highlight the
w eaknesses of each m arket system (especially w ith
regard to environm ental aspects) and d iscuss the
associated role of the government in the economy.
