IND 605 LAB SUMMARY FALL 2016

IND 605 Experimental Design and Quality Assurance

Lab Summary
Overview
All students will be required to complete three labs. The labs will be conducted in accordance
with the schedule provided in the course outline. Attendance at all labs is mandatory.
Lab 1 Basic Measurement and Inference for a Single Sample
The purpose of this lab is to review basic measurement techniques and to apply them to quality
control in a manufacturing environment. Students will be required to collect data on the physical
measurements of a number of items and to conduct a basic analysis of the data obtained. The key
steps in the lab are as follows:
1. Review use of measurement tools. A brief tutorial on using the tools required to complete
the lab (i.e. a micrometer, a vernier caliper, and a scale) will be provided by the lab
technician.
2. Collect data. Students will be required to collect unique data in order to complete the
analysis. Each team of students will be provided with a sample of items located in
drawers in EPH 344. Each team will be assigned a drawer of items by the lab technician.
No mixing of the items from each drawer is permitted. For each item in the drawer,
students will be required to measure and record the length, diameter, and/or weight of the
item. Further instructions will be provided by the lab technician.
3. Conduct analysis. Using the data collected in step 2, students will be required to
complete an analysis on the mean of a normal distribution with the variance unknown.
Information on the mean to be used in the analysis will be provided by the lab technician.
The means will vary depending on the drawer assigned. Students will use the mean
provided by the lab technician to establish the appropriate hypotheses. Students will then
be asked to test the hypothesis using = 0.05. Assume that the data is normally
distributed. Further information on inference on the mean of a normal distribution with
variance unknown is available in section 4.3.3 of the Statistical Quality Control textbook.
Each group is responsible for submitting a lab report. The lab report must identify the drawer of
items assigned to the team, the measurements obtained, and a summary of the analysis. The lab
report is due one week following the completion of the lab. The lab report will be marked by the
TA.
Lab 2 Inference for Two Samples
Lab 2 is an extension of Lab 1. The purpose of this lab is to reinforce the use of measurement
techniques and to conduct an analysis on statistical inference for two samples. As in Lab 1,
students will be required to collect data on the physical measurements of a number of items and
to conduct a basic analysis of the data obtained. The key steps in the lab are as follows:
1. Collect data. Students will be required to collect unique data in order to complete the
analysis. Each team of students will be provided with two samples of items located in
drawers in EPH 344. Each team will be assigned two drawers of items by the lab
technician. No mixing of the items from each drawer is permitted. For each item in both
of the drawers, students will be required to measure and record the length, diameter,
and/or weight of the item. Further instructions will be provided by the lab technician.

2. Conduct analysis. Using the data collected in step 1, students will be required to
complete an analysis on the inference for a difference in means of two normal
distributions with variances unknown. Specifically, students must determine if there is
any difference between the means. Use = 0.05 and assume equal variances. Further
information on inference for a difference in means of two normal distributions with
variances unknown is available in section 4.4.2 of the Statistical Quality Control
textbook.
Each group is responsible for submitting a lab report. The lab report must identify the drawers of
items assigned to the team, the measurements obtained, and a summary of the analysis. The lab
report is due one week following the completion of the lab. The lab report will be marked by the
TA.
Lab 3 Control Charts
The purpose of this lab is to expose students to the development of control charts for variables.
Students will be required to collect data on a process for manufacturing widgets and set up x-bar
and R charts. The key steps in the lab are as follows:
1. Collect data. Students will be required to collect unique data necessary to develop
control charts. In order to plot the control charts, 20 groups of data consisting of 3
samples each are required. To ensure that a random sample is collected, students will
generate a set of random numbers using the bingo machine in EPH 344.
The bingo machine contains 50 balls numbered from 1-50. After all of the balls have
been placed in the bingo machine, students will be required to run the machine in order to
generate an output ball. Students will then record the number printed on the ball and
place the ball back inside the machine. This process will be repeated 2 more times in
order to complete 1 group of data. The entire process will then be repeated in order to
gather the required 20 groups.
Once all of the required random numbers have been obtained, they will be used to assign
the data necessary to develop the control charts. The data is provided in the table below.
The table consists of 50 rows of data (one for each of the numbers printed on the balls in
the bingo machine). Each row also contains a value on the thickness of the widget.
Students will be required to determine the average thickness of the widgets for each
sample and then use those to develop the control charts.
Instructions on using the bingo machine and the table will be provided at the beginning of
the lab by the lab technician.
2. Plot control charts. Using the data collected in step 1, students will be required to set up
x-bar and R charts. The UCL, LCL, and centre line must be plotted on both control
charts. The charts must be plotted using appropriate software.
3. Draw conclusions. Students are required to draw conclusions based on an analysis of the
control charts developed in step 2. Although students will have discretion in developing
an appropriate discussion, students should at a minimum discuss if the process is in
statistical control.

IND 605 LAB SUMMARY FALL 2016

Each group is responsible for submitting a lab report. The lab report must contain a title page, a
summary of the data collected, the calculations, a plot of the control charts, and a discussion of
the conclusions that can be drawn from the control charts. The lab report is due one week
following the completion of the lab. The lab report will be marked by the TA.
