PHRASAL VERBS

Phrasal Verb: Take in


1.Meaning: Absorb information/ understand
Example: The lecture was rather boring and I didn't TAKE IN much of what the lecturer said.

2. Meaning: Deceive
Example: She TOOK me IN with her story until someone told me the truth.

3. Meaning: Make clothes smaller


Example: The jacket was far too big around the shoulders, so I had it TAKEN IN so that I could wear it.

4. Meaning: Assume care or support


Example: The family TOOK IN the three homeless kittens.
to give away'1 means to give something for free, for no payment.

In this issue of the magazine, they are giving away a free CD

I gave away all my old clothes that were too small for me.

2 to tell people something secret, often without intending to:


The party was meant to be a surprise, but Sharon gave it away.
Give up means 1 Surrender, stop trying Example: I can't think of the answer; I GIVE UP.
2 Stop doing something that has been a habit
Example: I GAVE UP taking sugar in tea and coffee to lose weight.
3 Stop doing something Example: I have GIVEN UP trying to help them.
Phrasal Verb: Work out
Meaning: Find the answer or solution
Example: I couldn't WORK OUT all the answers to the crossword puzzle.

Definition
1. To calculate.
I can't you work out this mathematical operation.
2. To make sense of.
I can't work these instructions out.
3. To succeed.
Our project worked out perfectly well.

Work up means 1.to develop a particular feeling

Put down 1.to write something on a piece of paper

2 to criticize someone, especially when other people are present, in a way that makes them feel stupid

Phrasal Verb: Put up
Meaning: Allow someone to stay at your house for a night or a few days.
Example: She PUT me UP for the night because I'd missed the last bus and there were no night buses running.
2 Meaning: Increase prices, taxes, duties, etc.
Example: The government has PUT tuition fees for undergraduate students UP again
Phrasal Verb: Get on with
Meaning: Have a good relationship Example: Fortunately, I GET ON WITH my boss.
2 Meaning: Continue or start doing something

Example: She told us to GET ON WITH our work.

Phrasal Verb: Get up to


Meaning: Do something wrong or naughty
Example: The children are always GETTING UP TO some trouble or other.
