1. DIODES CIRCUITS AND RECTIFIERS:
Semiconductor diodes are used in may electrical and electronic engineering
applications. In power electronics, the circuits diodes are used for for
conversion of ac power to dc power, and are known as rectifiers. One of the
most popular application of diode as a rectifier. A rectifier is an electronic
circuit that converts ac voltage to dc voltage using unidirectional property of
the diode. rectifier are widely used at different stages electronic circuits for
conversion of ac to dc voltage. They are an integral part of almost all power
supplies of electronic circuits such as radio, television recivers, VCRs, CD
players,computers and mobiles.

SIMULATION OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF RECTIFIERS AND

THEIR COMBINATIONS
1 SIMULATION OF A SINGLE-PHASE HALF-WAVE RECTIFIER WITH RL LOAD:
A half-wave rectifier with RL load is shown in figure 1. If the load is
indeuctive, conversion period the diode with extend beyond 180degree until
the current becomes zero. This results in negative output voltage and
reduces average output voltage. The waveforms for input voltage, output
voltage and output current is shown in figure 2.

The easy experimenting of low-cost computing power and the availiblity of

sophisticated numerical software tools provide the opportunity to reorient the
existing approach to understand the subject using the concept of
modeling,simulation and virtual experimentation.
Today, computers can be used to understand both the conceptual issues in any
subject as well as to facilitate analysis and design.computer simulation can
contribute to understand the theroitical concepts using modeling and simulation
and can also complement the laboratory experience as well as simulate interest and
participation in lecture course.

Virtual experimentation involves use of computer simulations to observe various

independent and dependent variables and analyse them theoretically without the
use of physical systems, that include the expensive machine tools and sophisticated
measuring equipments. virtual experimentation may also facilitate monitoring of
imaginary variables such as flow of current, flux and torque in an electrical system.
Simulation tools and technique facilitate study of steady and dynamic behavior
through numerical solutions of different electrical and electronic circuits with help of
effective graphical output. users can create a circuit or model system equation

can be stored.by the use of simulation control option, the user can choose to do the
simulation for a specified time and then resume the analysis with changed
parameters from that time point.
The selection of MATLAB as a tool is justified by student familiarity, ease of use,
accessibility , availability of student version of software and similarity of the
software solution to theoretical problems.

Recently advancement of semiconductor devices and modern control technology

has revolutionized the field of electrical power control and introduced a branch of
engineering known as POWER ELECTRONICS.
Power electronics can be defined as the branch of engineering thats deals with the
application of solid state electronics for control and conversion of electrical power. It
is the combination of three components power, electronics and control. Power
deals with the static and rotating electrical power equipment; electronics deals with
the solid state devices and circuit devices and circuits; and control deals with the
signal processing to meet the desired control objectives.

ABSTRACT:
Power electronic conevreters utilizing switching devices have become an intergral
part of the indusrial as well as domestic applications.power electronics have found
an important place in modern electrical power system and are being used in
applications ranging from few watts to MWs such as ligh and heat control, motor
control, power supplies, electrical vehicles and electrical utility applications due to
the following reasons:
1. Small size and lack of rotating parts.
2. Reduced losses and high efficiency.

Study of modeling and design of power electronic converters and their control has
become essential for engineering and students. System modeling and analytical
study can give an idea of its behavior in steady state. However ,predicting the
transient behavior is much more difficult. Simulation of power electronic converters
