Should police robots in the United States be

allowed to carry weapons and to use weapons-lethal (firearm) or non-lethal (electric stun guns or
tear gas)?
Technology nowadays has become simultaneously a blessing as well as
a curse for the existence of humanity. We mustnt forget that the primary
objective of technology is to serve the humankind, but not to rule the
humankind. At this time, there exists a controversy over allowing police
robots in the United States to carry and to use lethal or non-lethal weapons. I
believe that police robot should not be allowed to carry any type of weapons
(lethal or non-lethal), because however smart a system can become, we
cannot yet put humanity and emotions in it. So, considering the threats
associated with it and the insecure feeling among the people, we should
never put weapons in the hand of some advanced machines, called robot.

First of all, Robots lacks humanity. To illustrate this, let us consider an

example of a shabby young kid is mugging or snatching someones purse.
When the snatcher will be running, the human police can consider his
situation from his shabby clothes and the nature of his crime. But, in an
automated system, there is some codes and algorithms given input to them,
so it cannot judge properly even if someone controlling it with a joystick
sitting in the office. Moreover, in police profession there are a lot of
emotional and considering things to be done. But, if you put an automated
robot, or human controlled robot, it will absolutely lack that sense.

Secondly, using robots in policing fundamentally limits the reach of

policemen. Because, when a human police is at any situation, s/he can take
any sudden decisions necessary to control or reduce the damage. Whereas,
a binary coded robot cannot even be compared with human police, in case of
strategically control a situation. Even if the robot is remotely controlled by
human operator, it still lacks the competent and caliber that a properly
trained police officer can exhibit. You can consider combine this paragraph
with the previous one because some ideas overlap.

Thirdly, use of police robots will significantly enhance the distance

between people and police. Because, technology may have given us a lot of
things, still people are very much afraid of risking their lives in the hand of a

robot. So, if we use robots for policing, everyday people will be afraid when
they get out of their house. Another important thing for policing is
accountability. If a policeman makes any mistake, s/he is accountable for
his/her deeds. But, using technology instead of humans will give the operator
a freedom of unaccountability. As a result, the actions will be more
autonomous in nature. For example, in the passage and in the video, we can
see that a robot has been used for killing an assailant. But, it was not fair.
However severe a crime s/he might have done, s/he had every right to face
the trial.

Fourthly, hacking into the control system of the police robots, criminal
can do severe crime, like killing mass people and destroying several
constructions at a time. Newer technology supersedes the previous one. As a
result, however strong the security system of a police robot control system
is, a hacker might have the access to it; and s/he can do severe crime using
the access and power of armed police robots.

Finally, using robots to assist human growth and to help the society go
forward is a very good thing. But, we should be very careful about the
limitations and access that we should provide to our invented technology.
Whatever the necessity is, we should not give control to a device to control
our lives. To conclude, we should not permit to use police robots in the
United States considering the lack of humanity, the fear in peoples mind and
the threat associated with allowing a police robot to carry lethal or non-lethal
weapons.
