Course Description: This course introduces the fundamental principles of computer
programming using Java. Topics include: Writing Java programs, Objects and Classes, Class
variables and methods, Decision and Loop constructs, Data types, Writing classes, etc.
Chapter 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 11, and 14 will be covered; chapter 6, 9, 12, and 13 will be
covered if time allows. It is expected that students should have the text and they should
alwaystrytoreadaheadoflectures.
Prerequisites:CSc2010withagradeofCorhigher.
Thedepartmentwillstrictlyenforceallprerequisites.Studentswithoutproperprerequisites
willbedroppedfromtheclass,withoutanypriornotice,atanytimeduringthesemester.
Withdrawals:ThelastdayforregularwithdrawalisTuesday, March 5, 2013.
CourseGrades:Themajorcoursegradewillbederivedfrom:anumberofregularquizzes,
threeclass tests,acumulativefinalexam,andseveralprogrammingassignments.Thetable
below shows the percentage breakdown. (Pop quizzes and project might be given as
bonuses).

onaletterheadpaperfromaphysicianorhospitalorcourtstatingthatyoucouldnottakethe
testorexamasscheduledisnecessaryformetoconsideryourcase.
Absolutely no makeup or excuse for the final exam. If for some medical reason or ANY
OTHER reasons, you cannot take the final exam, then you should consider applying for an
Incomplete.
Assignments: Assignments will be posted on the course website. They are individual
assignments designed totestyourmastery of topicscovereduptothattime. Preparingthe
solutionsfortheassignmentswillhelpyoutopartlygetreadyforthequizzesandtests.
Plagiarism:Allworksubmittedforgradingmustbethestudentsownwork.Plagiarismwill
result in a scoreof0 for the work or dismissal from the course and the Dean of Students
officewillbenotified.Itisthestudentsdutytoallownoonetocopyhisorherwork.Ifitis
found, in the opinion of the instructor, that one student copied from another, both will be
given0regardlessofwhocopiedfromwhom.Pleasereviewtheuniversitypolicyoncheating

Absencefromclass:Studentsareresponsibleforallmaterialscoveredinclassandassigned.
Shouldastudentbeabsentfromclass,itishis/herresponsibilitytogetthenotes,etc.forthat
missed class. Should there be assignments, it is the students' responsibility to obtain such
assignments.
Class Expectations: All electronic devices must be turned off during the lectures (unless
otherwisetold).Thisincludes,butisnotlimitedto,cellphones,laptops,tablets,etc.Failureto
complymayresultintheInstructoraskingtheguiltystudent(s)toleavetheclassroom.
Grading:Quizzesandexamswillbegradedandreturnedinapproximatelyoneweekafterit
wasgiven.Shouldtherebeadelay,thestudentswillbenotified.
