1. Interested research orientation: Secondary combustion device for regular traffic vehicles
to reduce the waste gas emission.
2. Topic about the research: Secondary combustion system
3. Intended goal and need: By constructing the engine with primary and secondary
combustion chambers, emission of waste gas and a most efficient utilization of the energy
of the mixture can be achieved.
4. Needed background: Generally, some combustions systems produce mechanical torque
by combusting a fuel and air mixture. This process yields by-products including
undesired emissions. Some combustion systems form an essential part of a turbomachine,
such as, but not limiting of, a gas turbine. The primary emissions are oxides of nitrogen
(NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and unburned hydrocarbons (UHC). Oxidation of
molecular nitrogen in air breathing machines, such as, but not liming of, gas turbines, is
highly dependent upon the maximum temperature in the combustion system reaction
zone and the residence time for the reactants at the maximum temperatures reached
within the combustor. The level of thermal NOx formation is minimized by maintaining
the reaction zone temperature below the level at which thermal NOx is formed or by
maintaining an extremely short residence time at high temperature such that there is
insufficient time for the NOx formation reactions to progress.

i. Abstract: A device comprising a perforated housing containing therein
pellets of a chemical composition which undergoes self-sustaining
combustion with generation of a combustion gas and an initiator attached
to the housing to ignite the pellets. To prevent breaking of the pellets
resulting from their movements in the housing, a hollow and resilient
retainer member is placed in the housing such that the initiator is exposed

to the interior of the retainer and that the pellets are spaced from the
initiator by the retainer and held under a compressive force by the
resiliency of the retainer. The retainer has openings which allow a gas to
pass there through but do not allow the pellets to pass there through. A
helical spring and a perforated bellows are examples of the retainer.

Patent CN101907046 A. Aug.-Sept. 2010. Print.
i. Abstract: The invention relates to a secondary combustion intake system
of diesel engine exhaust, belonging to an intake device, in particular to a
secondary intake device used on a diesel engine for collecting exhaust.
The secondary intake device on the diesel engine for collecting exhaust
comprises an air cylinder assembly, an intake pipe and an exhaust pipe,
wherein the intake pipe is connected to one end of the air cylinder
assembly, the exhaust pipe is connected to the other end of the air cylinder
assembly, a round pipe is arranged between the intake pipe and the
exhaust pipe, a threaded guide groove is arranged in the round pipe, one
end of the round pipe is connected to the intake pipe, the other end of the
round pipe is connected to the exhaust pipe, and both ends of the round
pipe are communicated with the intake pipe and the exhaust pipe. By
using the secondary combustion intake system, oil consumption of a diesel
can be reduced by 14 percent and smoke emission is not more than 261
g/km.

Opinion
Well written proposal that organizes the goals, background, references
point by point. The paragraph on needed background is welldescribed. It mentions the formation of engine emissions and how can
it be avoided. It lucidly explains two mechanisms of reducing NOx
formation. However, in relation to traffic vehicles, how the waste gas
emission would be beneficial is not mentioned. The construction of an
engine with primary and secondary combustion chamber to
experimentally investigate the reduction of emission of wastegas and
increased energy efficiency may not feasible within the 8 weeks
timeframe. Therefore, a paragraph that narrows down the key
parameters which are going to be studied may be incorporated. Also
the results, in order to be validated, should be compared with existing
experimental data. The author also didnt mention which pollutant
(NOx or UHC or CO or all of them) formation is going to be studied.
Overall, the proposal focuses on one of the major problems associated
with combustion system, engine emission reduction and energy
efficiency. Both of which are well suited for understanding the
concepts and principles taught in the class. Moreover, the participants
will get hands on experience of engine construction which will be
beneficial for any practical engineer.
