Introduction
TheArsNotoriaisaMedievalGrimoireofthe'SolomonicCycle'.Many
Latinmanuscriptsareextant,theoldestaredatedthirteenthcentury,and
possiblyearlier.LikeLiberJuratus(alsothirteenthcentury),thetextcenters
aroundanevenoldercollectionoforationsorprayerswhichareinterspersed
withmagicalwords.TheorationsinArsNotoriaandthoseinLiberJuratusare
closelyrelated,andthereisevidencethattheArsNotoriarepresentstheearlier
version,andLiberJuratusisdependentonit.(SeeGstaHedegrd:Liber
IuratusHonorii Stockholm:Almovist&WiksellInternational,2002.)The
orationsinbothworksaresaidtohavemysticalpropertieswhichcanimpart
communionwithGodandinstantknowledgeofdivineandhumanartsand
sciences.
RobertTurner's1657editionoftheArsNotoriaisevidentlyhisown
translationfromtheLatin,andisapparentlybasedontheLatinversionwhich
wasprintedwithAgrippa'sOperaOmnia.Unfortunatelyboththeseversions
omitthedrawingsofthenotae
ormysticaldrawingswhicharethecenterpiece
ofthisart.Theiromissionaddsgreatlytotheconfusionofthetext.
Unfortunately,Turnerfurtheraddstotheconfusionbyomittingsomeofthe
internalreferencestothemissingfigures(forexample,seeoration8.)
Turner'stranslationsalsoexhibitsomeantiCatholicbias,asmightbe
expected.Asexamples,heomitsreferencestoconfession,orrendersthe
passageas"confesseduntoGod";healsodropsreferencestoremainingfaithful
totheCatholicchurch.
TheArsNotoriaenjoyedalongandfluidhistory,thetextmutatingover
