Introduction

Windows 10 is packed full of features, updated and added to on a regular


basis, all designed to make life easier and give you a more streamlined
Windows 10 experience. The latest operating system from the Redmond giant
is the perfect combination of the very best of Windows 7 and Windows 8, with
something for everyone.
Some of the features that help you to increase productivity are immediately
noticeable while others are a little more hidden away, requiring you to delve
through menus and settings before you can make thing just that little bit
easier.

With these 100 tips and tricks, I am going to take you on a guided tour through
the hidden corners of Windows 10, and provide you with ways to tweak
Window 10 to get it working just how you want it to.
The tips are designed to help you save time off tasks that have to be
performed regularly and to help you navigate your way around Windows 10
much easier and quicker.

100 Windows 10 Tips and Tricks


1 - Choose the Custom Install option
When you install Windows 10, you get two options to use the Express install
settings or go for a custom install.
Choose the Custom Install option. It may take you longer to set Windows 10
up but you have far more control of many aspects of the installation, including
the all-important privacy settings.

2 - Delete the Previous Windows Operating System


Once you have updated to Windows 10 and have decided that you are staying
put, get rid of the old Windows files.
Although these are automatically deleted after 30 days, you can do it earlier
if you have no intentions of going backward to your old version of Windows.
Heres how:
Open the Control Panel
Click on Administrative Tools
Click Disk Clean-Up and then select the option for Previous Windows
Installations from the drop down menu

Click on OK to remove the old windows operating system from your computer

3 - Go Touch-Friendly
If your computer or laptop is equipped with a touch screen it is easy to enable
the Touch-friendly Continuum interface in Windows 10. This allows you to use
your computer in Tablet mode.
Click on Start, Settings
Now click on System and then choose Tablet Mode from the menu on the
left of the screen.

Change your settings as needed.

4 - Use Task Manager to Monitor System Resources


Task manager has always been a useful tool but, with Windows 10, it has
received a bit of an upgrade with a user-friendly interface and information that
is easier to understand.
They have even added in graphs to make it even easier.

Make yourself fully familiar with Task Manager on Window 10 so you can keep
an eye on what is using up your resources and shut down tasks that you dont
need running or have become unresponsive.

5 - Take a Peek at the Desktop


At the far right end of your taskbar, you will see a very thin horizontal line
click on it and choose the option for Peek at Desktop.
Now, whenever you move your mouse over that line, you will see your
desktop when you move the mouse away, the desktop will disappear.

6 - Choose Your Desktop Icons


If you use specific locations on your desktop on a regular basis, you can gain
easier access to them by dropping an icon on your desktop.

Open Start and click on Settings


Then click on Personalization
Choose Themes

Select Desktop Icon Settings and pick the icons you want to show on your
desktop.

7 - Colorize Your Start Menu


Windows 10 comes with a default color on the start menu and while many of
us probably wont take any notice, not everyone will like it, especially when
they have been working away on the screen for several hours.
You can change it to one that suits you better by:
Opening Start and then Settings

Click on Personalization and Colors

Click on the box beside Automatically Pick an Accent Color from My


Background to disable the option
Choose your own color from the palette.

8 - Hide Apps that Have Been Opened Recently


The Start Menu on Windows 10 shows a list of programs, apps, and files that
you opened recently.
If you find this clutters up your start menu and you really dont want to see it,
you can remove them:
Open Start and Settings
Click on Personalization

Click on Start
And then toggle the option for Show Recently Added Apps to Off.

9 - Change the Names and Icons of your Tiles


If you want to change the names or the icons on any of the non-modern apps,
its a fairly simple procedure.
Right click on the tile that you want to change, and select Open File Location
from the drop-down menu.
The Programs folder will open. Press F2 to give the shortcut a new name.
To change the actual icon, right click on the shortcut and choose properties
from the menu.
Click on Change Icon and choose the one you want.

10 - Change the Size of your Start Menu


If you want more room for all the customizations that you are making, you can
change the size of the start menu to whatever size you like.
Take your mouse pointer to the right or top border of the Start menu.
The pointer will change to a set of arrows, allowing you to drag them to the
size that you want, both height and width.

11 - Get Rid of a few tiles


If there are too many tiles on the menu and you dont use or want all of them,
start removing them one at a time.
Right click on a tile
Choose Unpin from Start in the menu options

12 - Take Away the Search Box for Cortana


The search box for Cortana takes up quite a bit of room but you can easily
remove it if you dont want it.
Right click on any part of the taskbar that is empty
Choose Cortana from the menu that appears
Select Hidden to turn the search box into a popup rather than a static box

If you choose, you can have a standard icon for Cortana on the taskbar.
Instead of selecting Hidden, choose Show Cortana Icon instead.

13 - Group your tiles and label them


The Start menu will arrange all of your tiles into two separate groups by
default but you dont have to stick with those names. To change a name, click
on the label and type in the new one.
If you have your own pinned tile, hover the mouse pointer above the area
over the top of them.
Two parallel lines will appear click on them to give that particular group a
name.

14 - Go back to the previous Interface for Volume Control


If you want the old style vertical level for volume in your system tray, you will
need to make a change to the Registry files.
Open Registry Editor by typing Regedit in the search box.

Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\key


Right-click on the key and choose New > Key; call it MTUVC
Under that, you need to create a new DWORD called EnableMtcUvc. Set the
value to 0 and the old style interface for the volume control will appear.

15 - Restore the old Battery Display


Windows 10 has a new battery fly out but not everyone will like it. If you want
to see the old style battery display in your taskbar, head back to the registry
by typing Regedit in the search bar.

Locate
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Immersive
shell

Make a new DWORD called UseWin32BatteryFlyout and give it a value of 1

16 - Let Cortana Know What Your Preferences Are


If you tell Cortana your preferences, you will get much better and more
targeted recommendations.
Open Cortana Notebook by clicking on the Cortana Search box and clicking
the Notebook icon.

Pick the category you want to change, click on it and make your changes.
Repeat for all categories you want to change.

17 - Change your power user menu


If you want to customize how your power menu looks to suit your working
choice and workflow,
Open up C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX
There are three folders here, each one containing entries for your Power User
menu. Move them or get rid of them, whichever suits you.

18 - Use Cortana to send an Email


Cortana is useful for loads of things, including sending emails hands-free. All
you need to do is say to Cortana, Send an email to (Name of person) and
then dictate the email message you want to send.
Cortana will look for the name of the recipient in People App and will then
compose your email using your dictated text. If all is ok and you dont want to
change anything just say Send.

19 - Change Default View in File Explorer


File Explorer will automatically show you the Quick Access View but if you
wanted to change this to go directly to This PC when it launches, click on
View, followed by Options and then change the setting for Open File Explorer
to This PC.

20 - Back up your Libraries Automatically


Its always a good idea to back up everything including your libraries. To do
this you will need to connect an external drive to your PC.
Then Click on Start > Settings
Click on Update & Security
Click on Backup
Click on Add a Drive and choose the external drive you connected.
Under File History, enable the option

21 - Restart Windows Explorer


If you make lots of changes on your computer, you will need at some point to
restart your PC so the changes can take effect.
To do this quickly, right click on the taskbar and launch Task Manager.
Click on More Details

Under Processes, search for Windows Explorer


Right click it and select Restart

22 - Swipe Menu
When you run your PC in Tablet Mode, your apps all run in Full Screen.
To open the menu and gain access to command and to window control simply
swipe in from the top of your screen.

23 - Make Keyboard Shortcut for Apps


Any app can have a customer keyboard shortcut attached to it, making it
easier and quicker to launch. To do this:
Right click on the icon for an app
From the menu, choose Properties and then Shortcut

A text box will appear, labeled Shortcut Key click inside the box and
press the key you want to use as the shortcut

24 - Use Your Power User menu


Although Windows 10 is much easier to use, you still dont get Control Panel
on the menu list when you open the Start menu. However, you do still have
access to the Power User menu from Windows 8.
To get it right click on Start
OR
Press on Win+X to bring it up using the shortcut

25 - Move Photos to your PC from your Phone


Most of us have loads of photos on our phones and would love to have them
on our computers. This is easy;

Simply plug your phone into your PC using the cable supplied with the phone.
This will open up the Phone Companion app in Windows 10 and show you
information about your particular phone.
Scroll through the information and click on Import Photos and Videos into the
Photos App and all the content from your phone will be sent to your PC.

26 - Edit Your Photos and Share Them


The Windows 10 Photo app can be used to fix a whole multitude of common
flaws that we get on our photos including straightening up, sharpening the
images and applying effects and filters.
And, if you have installed the social media apps, like Twitter or Facebook, you
can even use the Photos app to share images across your friends and family
contact lists.

27 - Create an Image of your System


To make and store a backup image of your system, Open Start and then
Settings.
In the Text box at the top, type in File.
Choose the File History tool and look for the System Image Backup link
you will find it in the bottom left corner.
Click on it to begin the Wizard and follow the instruction on screen to choose
the drive where you want to store the backup image.

28 - Add Gestures to Mail


Windows 10 has a new Mail app and it will support a small number of gestures
for a list of common tasks.
Click the Gear Icon in Mail this will open the app settings.

Open the Options section and enable the option for Swipe Action.
Define the actions for both right and left swipe gestures in the pull-down
menu.

29 - Make Your Apps Launch Faster at Boot


If you are using a computer that is super-fast, you can make things even faster
by disabling the artificial app startup delay.
To do this:
Open Regedit
Locate KEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

Right click on Explorer and choose New > Key and then call it Serialize.
Under the key, make a new DWORD value called StartupDelayInMsec and
give it a value of 0.

30 - Use Your Map Offline


Instead of paying data charges when you want directions on the road,
download the offline version of the map you want.
Open Start and Settings
Click on System and then Offline Maps

Click on the button for Download Maps


Now you can get right down to the geographic area that you want to
download the map.

31 - Save your Apps to an External Drive


If you have opted to use an SSD in place of a normal HDD, you are probably
finding that, although you have gained on speed, you have had to sacrifice
space to get it.
You can ask Windows 10 to put your apps into an external drive if you want:
Open Start and Settings
Click on System and then Storage

Under New Apps Will Save To, select the external drive you want to install
them on.

32 - Sync Some Folders with OneDrive


OneDrive is incredibly user-friendly with Windows 10 and much more flexible.
You can choose which folders to sync to it by right clicking on the icon for
OneDrive in the Notifications section of the Taskbar.
Choose Settings and then click on the tab for Choose Folders.
Click the Choose Folders button to choose which of your cloud folders you
want to be able to access locally.

33 - Cut the Effects


If your computer isnt one of these super-fast ones with tons of space and
memory you might be finding that some Windows 10 settings are squeezing
performance just a little bit too much.
You can change this by cutting down on the default effects:
Open Control Panel
Click on System and Security
Click on System and then on Advanced System Settings

Next, locate Performance and click on Settings


Customize the effects how you want them to give you more performance on
your computer.

34 - Find your Apps much faster


To save time and not have to scroll through a list of apps in alphabetical order
to find the app you want simply click on a letter and see all the alphabet
letters.

Now choose the one that corresponds with the app you are looking for and
click on it you will see all of the relevant apps underneath it.

35 - Turn Live Tiles Off


Although Live Tiles are a neat addition, sometimes they can be distracting,
with constant changes and updates happening.
To stop Live Tiles from showing these updates, right-click on each one and
choose the option for Turn Live Tile Off.

36 - Chose the Folders You Want to See on Start


To customize your start menu, to see the folders you use most often, click on
Start and then Settings:
Click on Personalization
Choose the option for Choose which folders appear on Start

Customize away and choose the ones you want to see.

37 - View Your Apps Across Desktops


The Taskbar on Windows 10 shows the apps and the windows that are on
your current desktop by default.
You can change this to see all the open apps on all your desktops, including
the virtual ones, by clicking on Start and Settings.

Click on System and Multi-Tasking


Click on Virtual Desktops and choose All Desktops from the drop down
menu

38 - Scroll through Inactive Windows


Save a ton of time and effort when you have several windows open at the
same time by scrolling through the inactive windows that are in the
background.
To do this, simply hover your mouse over them and you can see exactly what
is open.

39 - Stream Your Media Across the Network


If you want to share your media across the network, on other devices
connected to the same network,

Open the Control Panel


Click on Network and Sharing Center
Click on Change Advance Sharing Settings
Navigate to the section for All Networks
Click on the link for Choose Media Streaming Options
Enable Media Sharing

40 - Customize your Battery Saver


The Windows 10 Battery Saver works by cutting down the activities in the
background thus giving you more battery time. To enable it,
Click on Start and Settings
Click on System
Click on Battery Saver

When your battery charge drops below 20% the battery saver will be
automatically brought into play.

41 - Disable Wi-Fi Sense


Wi-Fi Sense is a feature that allows you to share your Wi-Fi network access
with contacts in your Skype and Outlook accounts as well as, if you give
permission, your Facebook friends.
Of course, this could have security implications and if you are concerned
about the, you can disable the feature:
Open Start and Settings
Click on Network and Internet
Click on Wi-Fi and Manage Wi-Fi Settings

Disable all of the options that are visible and tell Windows 10 that it should
forget all the networks that you have signed into previously.

42 - Sign out of Windows


When you right click on the Start menu, you get the Power Menu which gives
you the option of shutting down or restarting your PC.
If you wanted to sign in as another user, click on the Start Menu and then click
your name at the top of the menu. This will give you another menu which
includes an option for signing out of Windows.

43 - Modify the Update Policy on Windows


Windows Updates often happen without you knowing a thing about it but you
can change that so you are always notified when an update is impending.
Open Regedit

Look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows key

Create a new key called WindowsUpdate


Under that, create another key called AU and then create a DWOD called
AUOptions with a value of 2.
Now go into Windows Updates and click on Check for Updates so that your
changes are effected.

44 - Shut the Desktop with a Slide Down Gesture


You can change the way your lock screen behaves by going to Windows and
clicking on System 32.
Double click the option for Slidetoshutdown.exe
From now on whenever you perform this in the future, your lock screen will
drop down so it covers half of your screen.

The Snap feature on Windows 10 comes with a Snap Assist feature and this
will let you snap two open windows so that you see them beside one another.
This lets you choose which window you want to snap.
If you opt to snap a window so that it is one-quarter of the size of your monitor,
simply drag the window up to a corner of the screen.

64 - Make Use of Virtual Desktops


Window 10 contains a lot of cool features and one of those is the ability to add
several desktops.
This is ideal for the person who has several different things going on at any
one time and finds it cumbersome to have to keep switching.
Each desktop can be set up for specific window lets say that you were
working on three different projects, each one could be opened on a separate
virtual desktop, making it much easier to work on each one without the others
interfering.
To set this up, click on the Task View button on your taskbar its right beside
the Search bar and looks a little like a Cyberman! From here you can open up
multiple desktops and use each one for something different.

65 - Move a Window from One Desktop to Another


If you have a window open on one desktop but it should really be on another
one, you dont need to shut it down, go to another desktop and then reopen
it.
Instead, click on the Task View to see all the windows open in each desktop
and then drag the relevant window to the desktop where you want it.
Or, if you want it in a new desktop, jut drag it to the New Desktop button and
a new virtual desktop will be created, containing that window.

66 - Manage The Notifications You See


By default, all notifications are shown in the Notification Center but you can
customize the quick action icons that show up in the Center.

70 - Stop a Specific App from Showing up in Recently Used


If you wanted to just stop a particular app from showing up in the list of
recently used apps, you can do the without having to disable the feature
completely.
Right click on the app in the list that you down want to show in the list
From the drop-down menu, choose Dont Show in this List.

71 - Make Your Start Menu Keyboard-Friendly


You dont have to use your mouse to operate the Start menu if you dont want
to because it can be made almost entirely keyboard-friendly.
Simply press the Windows button and use your arrow keys and the Search
feature to navigate it without a mouse.

72 - Stretch the Start Menu


If you have loads of things that you want to pin on the Start Menu you can
make the menu so that it stretches across your whole screen.

If you are not a fan of the virtual desktops, find that you keep clicking the Task

76 - Get the Old Control Panel Back


While the new Settings panel in Window 10 is much easier to find and navigate
than the old style control panel, not everyone prefers it.
If you want the old style control panel back, it is still there and is a great way

and X at the same time.
The Power User Menu will appear and you will see the option for Control

Windows 10 allow you to save your documents as PDF files without needing

programs and the Modern apps offer you the option for saving to PDF when
you go into the print option for the document you are working on.

92 - Mounting ISO Images


Another thing that Microsoft has included is the option of browsing the
contents of ISO image without needing to use third-party software.
All you do is right-click on the ISO image you want to see and select the
option for Mount.

File Explorer.

93 - Manage Your Contacts


In the People app, your contact can include work and home addresses,
email addresses and much more besides.
Depending on what has been added to a particular contact by way of

physical address or write an email to the contact.

94 - Enhance Your Reading in Edge


Microsofts Edge browser includes a feature that helps you to read web
pages with no distractions.
To do this, open the article on the internet that you want to read.
At the top of the screen is the Reading icon looks like a book. Click on this
and the adverts will disappear, giving you just the article to read.
You can also access this feature by clicking CTRL+SHIFT+R on your
keyboard.

95 - Enable New Features in the Command Prompt


In Windows 10 the new command prompt lets you copy and paste
commands, such as CTRL+C or CTRL+V easier than ever before.
To activate this feature, open the command prompt by typing cmd into the
search box and clicking on the top option.
Right-click the title bar of the prompt window and, under Edit Options, click
on Enable.

96 - Record a Video of an App You Are Using


Whether you are using an app or desktop software, Windows 10 provides
you with a Game DVR function that you can use to record what you are
using.
To activate, press the Windows button and G. This will open the Game
Bar
Click the Record button to start filming
The videos will be saved in Video>Captures Folder
Please be aware that Recording may slow down the performance of your
computer.

97 - Generate Battery Reports


If you want to keep an eye on the level of your laptop battery, you can
generate reports.
To do this, open the Administrative Command Prompt. To do this, type
cmd into the search box.
When the results come up, press the CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER keys
simultaneously.
A window will pop up asking if you are sure you want to do this click on
Yes.
When the command prompt appears, type in powercfg -energy -output
C:\report.html
This command will analyze the status of your battery and will create a report
called Power Efficiency Diagnostics Report which will be saved in the root
directory of your C: drive.

98 - Make a Recovery Disc


To make your own recovery disc, in case of problems,
Plug a USB storage device into your computer
Open Start and Settings
In the Find box at the top, type in Recovery and press Enter
