DESJOYAUX POOL MAINTENANCE

Your pool water is constantly prone to pollution and must be maintained

regularly to ensure it remains clear and healthy.
Physical maintenance mainly involves the maintenance of your filtration system
but also entails the removal of leaves, insects and other impurities.
Chemical maintenance means disinfecting your pool to ensure that the water is
germ-free.
PHYSICAL MAINTENANCE
Every day you need to clean your pool (walls & floor), and the various parts of the
filtration system, the pre-filter basket and the active membrane. (filter bag)
Cleaning the pool
The pool is cleaned using a vacuum cleaner, which may be manual or automatic.
If you choose the manual solution:
1. Position the vacuum cleaner head at the bottom of the pool.
2. Prime the vacuum cleaner hose by filling it with water using the discharge nozzle.
3. Depending on the power of your pump, position the skim-vac (dual plate) so that
some or all
of the suction is concentrated in the central hole.
4. Move the head of the vacuum over the pool in an orderly fashion (as if you were
mowing a
Lawn).
Regularly, depending on the condition of your surface water, carefully use
the scoop to remove leaves and other insects.
Filtration system components
In the Desjoyaux system, the water is sucked in by skimmer, passed through a filter
basket, filtered through the filtration bag or filtering membrane and then driven
back into the pool. Prior to the filtering membrane, there is a pre-filter basket, which
is designed to remove the largest impurities such as leaves. The efficiency of your
filtration system will depend on the cleanliness of these two components.

Cleaning the pre-filter basket (the filter system should be switched off prior to
this): Remove the basket from the suction bowl, empty it and then hose it down.

Cleaning the filter bag:

Once you have removed your pre-filter basket, release the filter bag, position it on
the specially-designed cleaning stand with the inside out, then hose it down until all
dirt has been removed. By gently cleaning the bag regularly, you will prolong
its life. Do not clog your filter bag as this will overload the pump motor.
The correct water level:
Check the water level frequently,
The correct water level is about above the skimmer. You set the discharge nozzle
to facilitate the surface skimming.
Oxygenating the water
Use the air switch to inject air into the water. This also helps with disinfection.
CHEMICAL MAINTENANCE
PRECAUTIONS

Never pour your chlorine, or any other chemical product directly into the
pool.
Always store your treatment products out of direct sunlight and away from
children, in a well-aired or well-ventilated area.
Never mix two different products in the same container.

The pH of the water

Whatever the treatment solution you choose, you must always begin by checking
the pH of the water.
The success or failure of your water treatment depends on the correct pH. Never
neglect this stage, which is essential. The pH, or potential hydrogen, is measured on
a scale of 0 to 14.

If the pH of your water is 7, it is neutral.

If it is less than 7, it is acidic.
If it is higher than 7, it is basic.

The higher/ lower the pH of your water is, the less effective the chlorine will be in
disinfecting the pool.

The ideal pH
The ideal pH is between 6.8 and 7.2 unless your water is calcareous, in which case
pH should not exceed 7.

What to do if your pH is incorrect

E.g.: for a 50 m3 swimming pool, the initial pH is 7.8 and you wish to bring it back
down 7.2; as the difference is 0.6, you need to use approximately 6 bottles of
hydrochloric acid**. For the opposite scenario, if your initial pH is 6.8 and you wish
to bring it back up to 7.2, as the difference is 0.4, you need to add water.
Pour the diluted acid directly into the skimmer basket whilst the filtration system is
running. (Ensure there are no chlorine tablets) Chlorination, to start after
minimum 2 hours of running the filter after adding acid. For a quicker result, you
can also dilute 1 liter of acid to 5 liters of pool water in a watering can and pour this
preparation in front of the discharge nozzle. You must never do this directly into
the pool with either chlorine or acid products.
** You can use tile household tile cleaning HCL which is of medium strength,
available at all home stores.
Whatever the case, never massively overload your pool with this type of product.
Take another reading approximately every two hours and do not overload.
Chlorination
Contrary to generally-accepted ideas. Chlorine is still the best disinfectant for your
pool. The correct dosage will significantly reduce any irritation, odour and deposit
problems. You should check chlorine levels bi or tri weekly at the same time as you
check the pH.
The ideal chlorine level
This should be clearly around at a minimum 2.5g/m 3 ~ 3g/m3. For your safety and
peace of mind, Desjoyaux has selected two types of stabilized chlorine: slowdissolving chlorine and shock chlorine.
The slow-dissolving stabilized chlorine takes the form of a 200 g tablet: it can be
used to maintain the free chlorine levels of your pool.
The shock stabilized chlorine generally plays a disinfecting role and also increases
your chlorine levels rapidly. Used on SOS basis should the chlorine levels be below
1mg/m3 or negligible, or if you notice algae in your pool. It takes the form of 20 gm
pellets. Use 1~1.5 pellet/m3, this regulating action is called shock chlorination.

When carrying out a shock chlorination, the filtration system must be in operation
and must remain so for as least two to three hours after the product has been
added & dissolved. Never put your bubble cover back on straight after shock
chlorination.

The dosage tablet

Once your pH has been set to the optimum level

Treatment cubage

To summarise: to ensure the cleanliness of your water, check the pH and

chlorine levels of your pool on a bi/tri-weekly basis and make the
necessary adjustments.
SOLUTIONS TO SPECIFIC SITUATIONS
On occasions, you will get some unexpected reactions in your water. For example, it
might turn green or white. Do not worry; this section contains some explanation and
suitable remedies.
Green water: This is mainly due to algae.
Causes:

pH out of balance
Filtration period too short
Lack of treatment product
Badly cleaned filter

Remedies:

Adjust your pH which is tending towards the acid/basic.

Brush the walls and base of the pool in order to suspend the algae.
Carry out a shock chlorination 40 g/m3 and finally filter continuously, cleaning
your filters once or twice a day or as appropriately required.

Very green water

The causes are more or less the same as for green water but, in this case, the
swimming pool has probably been neglected for a longer period.

What you need to do:

Adjust your pH which is tending towards the acid/basic.

Brush the walls and base of the pool in order to suspend the algae.
Carry out a shock chlorination 50 g/m3 and use or as required.
Filter continuously.
Clean your filter once or twice a day, or as required.

IMPORTANT: Ensure the bags are not clogged at any given time.

White water
This might be a result of algae which has been burnt by the chlorine. This burnt
algae is suspended in the water and clouds it, giving a white, milky water. The only
way to get your pool back to normal is by continuous filtering, bushing, and
vacuum.
If you are using any other product other than ours, white water could be a result of
that product.
Water saturation
To avoid the water in your pool becoming saturated due to the use of treatment
products, we recommend you renew up to 1/4 of the water volume each year.(Only
if required). If there is topping up of water done on regular basis, you may not
require to change your water at all.
If you have not taken this precaution and your water is saturated, we advise you to
change the water completely, which must be done under the supervision of your
Desjoyaux agent.
A few additional tips

If your water smells of chlorine and nips your eyes, this often means there is
not enough chlorine in it.(the chlorine is at the degasification stage which
causes a strong odour).
pH over 7.4.The chlorine products are losing much of their effect. There is
also a risk of calcium precipitation which will produce scale. In calcareous
water, stop the pH between 6.8 and 7.
Inexpensive filtration: the more you filter the cheaper it become.
- Water that flows (stream) is beautiful
- Water that stagnates (pond) is green.
Filtration day and night
Do not try to save money by only filtering at night, because at night the algae
are dormant. Their reproduction (photo synthesis) takes place during the day.

If you are going away for a while, arrange for someone to check the
following:
- The electrical supply is working correctly (reset the clock if required),
- Your filter & filter bag is in good condition,
- The pH of the water.
- The level of chlorine.
The filter bag
The bags filter at 15 or 6 microns. Never add any diatoms as you are likely to
damage the pump and only use the flocculating agent in extreme
circumstances.
