KofC: Send Aid to Genocide Victims

Supreme Knight Carl Anderson called on the U.S. government and humanitarian relief agencies to deliver aid directly to
Christians and other communities who are victims of genocide in Iraq and Syria. He made the comments in testimony before a joint
government commission on Thursday, Sept. 22.
Addressing the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, also known as the U.S. Helsinki Commission, the supreme
knight said:
Our legislative and executive representatives need to deliver to our diplomatic and aid entities a clear and simple message: In the
midst of this genocide, saving Christians and other communities that face extinction in Iraq and Syria is part of your mission.
There is nothing unconstitutional, illegal, unethical or unprofessional about prioritizing their right to survival as communities. They are
innocent victims of a genocide. If these victim communities are not receiving aid, you are not fulfilling your mission. And such action
is consistent with the best of American and U.S. State Department tradition.
Noting a precedent for such aid to specific communities devastated by genocide, the supreme knight cited American relief work in
the early 20th century. During this period, the U.S. government worked with Church groups and individuals to provide funding and
deliver aid directly to communities that had been victimized by the genocide against Christians during and following World War I.
In addition, Supreme Knight Anderson went on to call for an emergency appropriations package for the groups that have faced genocide. He said that U.S. aid to governments in the region should be conditioned on equal rights for religious minorities in order to foster religious pluralism and tolerance:
[The aid we provide must be an investment in a more peaceful future in the region. This cannot happen unless the system of religious apartheid there ends. Christians and other religious minorities are entitled to equal rights.
The Knights of Columbus has raised more than $11 million in support of Christian refugees, especially those from Iraq and Syria.
Together with In Defense of Christians, the Knights also produced a nearly 300-page report documenting the genocide occurring
against Christians at the hands of ISIS and related groups. That document was presented to the U.S. State Department in March and
has been widely credited for being instrumental in securing the U.S. governments genocide designation, delivered by Secretary of
State John Kerry on March 17.Supreme Knight Andersons testimony before the Helsinki Commission was his fourth testimony before the federal government in the past year. In May, he also testified before the United Nations.

District Deputys Message

Brothers and Sisters,

Its October, which was always one of my favorite months of the year as a kid. Football season is underway,
the Baseball Playoffs & World Series are ahead and hockey season was about to start! Not to mention Halloween and
all the candy!
October is Membership Month! All Councils are asked to hold Membership Drives and schedule Admission Degrees. Make sure that you have a Form 100 with you at all times! Remember, it is each Members Responsibility to
bring in new Members, so find out what your Council is planning, ask what you can do to help, and bring in a New
Member Soon!!!
I want to ask you to please save two upcoming dates: October 15th is the Conference Fundraiser for John Joseph, Suffolk Countys Candidate for State Deputy. This will be an Italian Feast at St. Sylvesters Council in Medford.
The event will be from 6:30 10:30 and the cost is $20 per person. For tickets or info please call Rich Burke at 631 654
-8474.
And on November 5th the Suffolk Board of District Deputies will be holding a Night at the Races. This event will
be held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish Center in Patchogue at 7:30 , doors open at 7 pm. Tickets are only $10 each.
See me for more info or for tickets to this event.
Vivat Jesus

The Chaplains Corner

Mother TeresaApostle Of Joy
Many people already think of Mother Teresa as a saint
because of her dedication to poor persons and outcasts throughout the world. But when Pope John Paul II beatifies her on Oct.
19, World Mission Sunday, Mother Teresa will actually be one
step closer to sainthood.
During investigations into Mother Teresas life, said
Father Brian, I discovered how spiritually mature she was while
still teaching as a Loreto nun in Calcutta.
In trepidation, she began her new task of serving the
poorest people of India. She found a model in the Italian nun,
Frances Xavier Cabrini (1850-1917), who had worked in the
United States. I read the life of St. M. Cabrini, Mother Teresa
wrote.

She was participating in his suffering, in his sense of

being abandoned in the Garden of Gethsemane and on the
cross, he added. This sharing with Jesus drew people to her.
The suffering continued to the end of her life.
The Church will be richer when Mother Teresa is beatified. Father Brian says serving as a postulator has been a positive experience for him. Apart from discovering the mystical aspect of Mother Teresa, it has given me a greater appreciation of
the communion of saints, he said. I appreciate more now the
real and effective love those in heaven have for us and how they
can be our real companions and friends.

Prayer for the Canonization of Father Michael J. McGivney

God, our Father, protector of the poor and
defender of the widow and orphan, you called
your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be
an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the
young to the generous service of their neighbor.
Through the example of his life and virtue may
we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely,
fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your
servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we
may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast.
We humbly ask that you glorify your servant Father Michael J.
McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will.
Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make
your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Our Father, Hail
Mary, Glory be.
