12th Grade World Literature

Week 5: October 3-5, 2016

We had a wonderful start with Mornings in Jenin!
This week we are continuing our work on Mornings in Jenin, while expanding
our conversations to include psychology and social identity theory. We will also
look at how narrative builds identity, focusing on the storytellers within our
story, the advice they give, and the values they teach. Amal will move abroad
and find herself alone in a new world, and we will examine how she copes and
what elements of her heritage she falls on for support.
Specific concepts: storytellers, history, and identity

Texts: Mornings in Jenin by Susan Abulhawa

Assignments: Reading response; quiz on Wednesday

Looking ahead: continuing a conversation about Mornings in Jenin and heritage
