INTRODUCTION

Introduction
Assessment is a valuable tool for both students and teachers. It provides motivation
for students and shows them what theyve learned. It also gives teachers a clear
idea of how well the students have assimilated the language taught and therefore
informs their planning. Through regular assessment teachers find out how quickly
they are able to move through the material and which areas in particular need
consolidation and recycling. It is important that the assessment component of any
language course is ongoing and part of the day-to-day learning process. Evaluation
and assessment can be done very informally as part the learning tasks that take
place. Regular recycling provides an excellent chance for the children to
demonstrate what they have learnt: this can be in the form of answering questions,
games and vocabulary activities. Self assessment is also important as it helps the
students to reflect and become more aware of their own learning, which is a crucial
skill that in turn helps them take more responsibility for their learning. Classroom
assessment can be combined with more short language tests and more formal fixed
point assessment at the end of every unit and/or every term to provide a clear
picture of each pupils progress.
The criteria for evaluation is clearly set out in the class lists in this Teachers Evaluation
Book to enable the teacher to clearly assess how each pupil has performed in each
unit. The objectives that precede every lesson in the Teachers Book also provide a
tool for teachers to effectively assess their pupils progress on an ongoing and daily
basis. Furthermore, the revision pages in the Activity Book give the students themselves
the chance to assess their own progress.
Many of the activities and games in the Teachers Book can all be used for classroom
assessment purposes, allowing the teacher to assess their students in an enjoyable
way through different types of task. It is important to assess a variety of different
activity types to cater for all type of learning styles within the class. Teachers will
probably find it helpful to make notes in the register or on an observation chart when
assessing informally. By keeping accurate records, this information can be used later
on for reporting purposes.

Footsteps 6 Tests
The Evaluation Book comprises 3 different types of tests, based on the course book
Footsteps 6, which have been formulated to assess and evaluate students learning
throughout the year.

Unit Tests
There are 12 unit tests, two for each of the six units of the course book. The two tests
are intended to reflect the mixed ability of the students in the class with Test A being
more supportive in nature whilst Test B often requires that students produce the target
language themselves to be able to complete a task.
Both Test A and Test B share the same listening which can therefore be played at the
same time but the tasks that the students have to complete are different. For example
Test A may have a matching task whilst Test B requires that the student produces the
answer from the CD.
Whereas the Revision Units in the course book can be done in collaboration with a
partner, the unit tests are designed to be done individually, so that both students and

teachers can truly evaluate the level of understanding and language the students have
acquired during the unit. The tasks in the tests are similar to the activities that students
encounter in their activity books and so are familiar to them and should not cause
confusion or distress.
Students should be informed beforehand when they will have a test and should be
given time to review. This also provides students with another opportunity to identify
areas they feel they may still have problems with. It is essential to remind students to
read the instructions beforehand and make sure they are clear about what they need
to do.

End of Term Tests


Recycling of language is integral to any language course and Footsteps continuously
reviews the target language through the revision units but also through all the material
resources that are available to the teacher and students: photocopiable material, CDROM. The end of term tests encourage students to look back over the previous two
units thus keeping the language present in their minds and in continuous use.
The end of term tests are designed for teachers to assess the overall achievement for
the term. Learning difficulties can be better assessed and classified so that help and
guidance can be provided. These tests should inform teacher of the individual
strengths and weaknesses of their learners and identify areas that need review before
moving on to the next terms work. These tests are also important for parents who
expect to be told how their child is coping with the foreign language. They too should
be involved in supporting their childs learning.

Diagnostic Tests
There are two diagnostic tests which are designed to clearly show how students have
progressed between the middle and the end of the academic year and provide them
with positive and motivating feedback.
The diagnostic tests carried out in the sixth year of Primary aim to test what the
students have learnt to date and what competencies they have developed before
moving on to the last year of Primary Education.
Each test is broken down into the areas of vocabulary, listening, reading, grammar,
writing and speaking and reflects the type of activities the learner has studied
throughout the course. Presenting familiar types of tasks the tests aim to evaluate the
skills the students have acquired in each unit of the course. The vocabulary and
listening sections aim to test the level of vocabulary they have acquired and their level
of comprehension. The grammar sections aims to see if the students have acquired
the language tools they need to use the language correctly. The writing activity allows
the teacher to see whether the student can access the necessary target language and
use it accurately in a freer writing task. The speaking activity encourages the students
to put into practice all the competences and structures they have learnt throughout the
course. It allows teachers to evaluate their vocabulary acquisition, their expression,
pronunciation and level of fluency in English.
All three tests form part of the process of evaluation. By being aware of their students
needs and areas of difficulties, teachers can better step in to provide the extra
practice and support to improve students learning and language skills.
