Reflection Journal Week 1
1. Overview
Our lesson today consisted of 20 3rd grade students out at Cleveland Elementary.
Our focus was on health-related fitness and locomotor skills. The previous learnt
skills for this lesson were walking, running, skipping, side shuffling, hopping,
jumping, leaping, and basic health-related fitness concepts. The required
equipment was 20 poly spots, 8 cones, 2 pennies, and a deck of UNO cards.
2. Student Learning Outcomes
A. The student learning outcomes for this lesson were to be able to perform a
squat with correct form 7/10 times, recite the cots for a squat with 100%
accuracy, and to be engaged in 50% MVPA during the lesson.
B. According to the data I have on the lesson, the MVPA for the lesson was
close to 50%. But there was very little time spent on instruction so the quality
of performance was low. A large portion of my time as the teacher was spent
on management rather than helping students with their performance. So even
though the students were moving it doesnt appear that enough attention is
being given to instruction and improving the quality of their movement.
C. I would have spent more time on instruction prior to each activity. Ideally, I
would like to spend a minute explaining the COTS for the different movement
concepts I was trying to teach, but due to behavioral issues and management
being difficult, I was focused on trying to keep the students moving. This will

probably be a battle I face every class but hopefully the students can develop
better behavioral habits so I can spend more time on instruction.
3. Creating a Quality Learning Environment
A. I believe the dimension of our learning experience that needs the most work
is the cognitive element. There wasnt sufficient time spent on the cognitive
aspect of the lesson and that was largely in part due to behavioral issues. In
the future I want to find strategies to limit behavioral issues so I can focus
more on the cognitive aspect of the lesson.
B. I dont have the exact amount of time spent the entire lesson on each aspect
of the lesson due to camera issues. But based on the footage we did have
and my memory of the lesson around 60% of the lesson was spent on
management, 30% on activity, and 10% on instruction. In order to improve
this ratio I think it will help to teach content more exciting to the students. Im
hoping that student behavior will improve if the content is more relatable to
the students because we already have several strategies in place to help
minimize management.
C. I felt that every student had the opportunity to practice skills at a high level.
Our two main lesson core activities were fitness concepts and locomotor skill
relays. During the fitness concepts we worked on pushups, jumping jacks,
squats, and running. I felt each student had adequate space to work on these
skills properly. Locomotor skill relays also gave every student a chance to
participate in a variety of different skills and difficulties and also having
adequate space to do so. I think something that could be improved in order to
give students more adequate practice time would be working on behavioral
issues so that less time is spent on management. A lot of time that I would

have liked to use on instruction and activity was used on management for this
reason.
D. I dont believe I provided students the opportunity to progress in their skills,
and part of that was because I didnt feel like they gave me an opportunity to.
As Ive stated multiple times, in order for skills to be developed further there
needs to be more of an emphasis on instruction, and in order for instruction to
improve there needs to be less management and bad behavior.
4. Strengths and Weaknesses
A. During the instant activity I walked throughout the play space and monitored
activity. The second activity had the students stay stationary, so I stood in
front of them so I had the ability to lead and command the activity. During
locomotor relays I paced the perimeter as students completed their leg of the
relay to increase motivation and their confidence as well. I could make more
of an effort to move during the teaching episode. The issue of tattle telling
though has presented a distraction to teaching and my observation of the
class.
B. I did not provide COTS for the skills we learned during this lesson. There
were a lot of skills to go over and the behavior of the students was already
poor. I did do my best to try and refine skills during the activities but not at the
rate I would have liked to. Managing the students and trying to keep them on
task took up most of my time.
C. My instructions were quick and clear for each activity. The difficult part is
maintaining the entire class attention during instruction. The students arent
motivated to listen to directions or follow all of the class rules.
D. I used demonstrations for each activity but they were brief due to students
wandering off. Luckily none of the skills used today were too complex and

needed a lot of demonstration. I would have liked to provide more

demonstration for pushups and squats but I wasnt able to. I did not use
students to demonstrate because overall most of them were having
behavioral issues. I would like to use more demonstrations and as I get into
the different sports I will make sure to use more.
E. I thought I managed equipment well for this lesson. The transitions between
tasks were fairly clear and equipment was dispersed easily and quickly. One
issue with equipment was the poly spots weve been using for home bases.
Students tend to throw them around or take more than one. I need to do a
better job in making sure the poly spots stay on the ground.
F. There was quite a bit of disruptive behavior during this lesson. A couple of my
students refused to participate in different parts of the lesson. One student
claimed to be injured when she wasnt and another student was crying due to
another student bullying them. I attempted to use a two warning system
where if they didnt change the behavior theyd sit out, but if I enforced it over
half the class would be sitting out.
G. I believe my teaching did show enthusiasm but the students werent
enthusiastic themselves about the topics we were learning about. I could do a
better job in motivating my students but it can be difficult when the behavior of
a portion of the students brings down your mood.
5. Recommendations
A. For my next lesson Im going to work to improve my instruction time before
each activity. I might have to become stricter with behavioral issues and sit
more students out during the lesson. Im also going to try and reduce the
amount of tattle telling to limit distractions during instruction.

B. The content for next week is going to be football to try and engage their

interest more in the activity. Doing strictly locomotor movements was difficult
and often lacked the instruction needed for a quality lesson. Football will be
good so I can focus more on skill instruction.
