1. Selection of Samples

2. Size of Samples

Details
Shall be sampled at the point of manufacture or storage, and at such time as to
allow the tests controlling acceptance or rejection.
liquid materials :
- For routine laboratory examination, 4 L
- From bulk storage, 4 L
- From drums, 1 L

3. Containers

- Shall be wide-mouth jars or bottles made of plastic with lined screw caps, or
plastic-lined triple-seal friction-top containers.D16

4. Protection and Preservation of Samples

- Sample containers shall be new. They shall not be washed or rinsed, or wiped
with an oily cloth.
- Prevent contaminated. Immediately after filling, the container shall be tightly.
- shall be properly marked for identification after filling with a suitable marking on
the container, not on the lid. labels or tags also may be used for identification

5. Sampling at Place of Manufacturer

5.1 Vertical Tank recommended below methods

- Sampling-Valve Method
Valves shall be located, with easy and safely, on the side of the tank with
The first in the top third of the tank, but no higher than
1 m from the top
The second in the middle
The third in the bottom third of the tank, but no lower than 1.1 m from the bottom
Drained a minimum of 4 L sample each sample value
1 to 4 L shall be drawn from each sample valve for test

- Thief Sampler Method

Samples shall be taken in the top, middle, and lower levels by lowering a thief
sampler into the material

-Throw-Away Container Method

Samples shall be taken at top, middle, and lower levels by lowering into the
material a container in a suitable weighted holding device (clean container)

5.2 Bulk Storage Tanks

When the tank is equipped with operating mechanical
Agitators, are performing adequate mixing, a single sample taken by any of the
methods described in section (5.1)

6. Sampling from Trucks or Recalculating Storage Tanks

The sample may be taken from the sample valve or tap if the tanks are
provided, before the sample is taken,
4 L shall be drawn from the sample valve and discarded.
Samples of liquid may be taken by the dip method using a clean wide-mouth or
friction-top can in a suitable holder as shown in picture, a clean container must be
used to take each sample, and the material sampled shall then be transferred to
another new and clean container for retention or testing sample.

A detachable fitting (similar the picture) may be inserted in the discharge line,
before the sample is taken 4 L shall be drawn from this sampling valve and
discarded

7. Sampling from Tankers

For liquid materials (including all cut-backs made

liquid by heating) top, middle, and lower samples shall be taken using the
methods as described in section 5.1
For all other materials made liquid by heating, a top
sample only shall be taken by the dip, thief, or throw-away container method.

8. Sampling from Pipe lines during Loading/Unloading

A suitable in-line sampling pipe (picture section 6), The sampling pipe shall be
not more than one eighth the diameter of the pipe line. Samples shall be taken
at uniform intervals throughout the entire loading or unloading. At the
completion of the loading or unloading, the individual 4 L samples shall be
combined

When sampling tankers and barges 4000 m3 or less, capacity, at least five 4-L
samples shall be taken at uniform intervals throughout the entire loading or
unloading, for larger, capacity requires at least ten 4-L samples

After thorough mixing, samples of liquid bituminous

material from drums shall be secured by tube or thief sampling by taking 1 L of
material from packages selected at random according the Table

9. Sampling from Drums

10. Homogeneity-Stir the sample before testing

All emulsions with viscosity requirements of 50C should be heated to 50+3C in

the original sample container in a 71C water bath or oven. The container should
be vented to relieve pressure. After the sample reaches 50+3C, stir the sample
to achieve homogeneity
