5.Name 2 important
considerations with regard to
time management.

4 There were really two types of responses to this question.

The first had to do with students as learners. They understood
that a teacher that understood their strengths, weaknesses,
and interests would be better able to help them to be
successful academically. They knew that someone who knew
them as a learner would be able to know what areas where
they were struggling and be able to help them through those
struggles or know the areas where they were strong and build
on those strengths. The comment that hit home most in this
regard was a boy that said, It is important for the teachers to
get to know their students because the more they get to know
each student the better they can teach them,

5a The teacher must avoid preparing lesson plans that are too
busy, which in reality will not work in class

5b The teacher should estimate how long each activity in the

lesson will take, ensuring that you achieve a balance

6 Closely linked with time management is the inclusion of

standby activities to be used if there is extra time available in the
lesson. At times activities may not last as long as anticipated, or
an activity might not be successful in class, so that you have

could be extra practice activities linked to the lesson topic and
language focus, games to provide further practice or revision
activities which recycle recently learned language and
vocabulary.

8aPresentation :
This is the stage of the lesson where the teacher presents the
target language of the lesson. If there is a new grammar structure
to teach, it should be presented contextually within the topic. The
presentation must be clear and explicit

8bPractice :

8.Name and explain the 3

stages of the PPP process.

At this stage of the lesson various activities are used to provide

controlled practice of the new language.Drilling and gap-fill
exercises are often used at this stage of the lessonThe focus is
on the accurate use of the language. The aim is to give students
confidence with the new structure before moving on to
production. The teacher is active and intercedes to correct and
help students

8cProduction :
The focus is on the students producing the language in a more
meaningful and authentic context and in a less controlled
manner. At this stage of the lesson, the language used is not just
confined to the target language; students are free to use other
language that they know in order to complete a task.Role plays,
discussions and problem solving activities are often used at this
stage of the lesson

9 The plenary is the round off stage of the lesson. The students

9.What is a plenary?

should reflect on what they have learned and the progress that
they have made.A good lesson is not complete if it does not
include this stage. The plenary stage of the lesson enables
students and teachers to identify and clarify what has been
learned

10 it is essential that students are given the opportunity to say

10.Why is it essential to include what they have learned.
The teacher should remind the students of the lesson objectives
a plenary at the end of a
and check understanding. Effective plenaries enable teachers to
lesson?
evaluate a lessons success and to plan future lessons more
effectively.

11 if you really want to develop yourself as a teacher, it is

11.Why should a teacher reflect
on his/her lessons at the end of
a lesson?

12.Name 3 questions that a

teacher should ask
herself/himself at the end of
lessons.

important either straight after class, or soon after, to reflect on the

lesson. This reflection stage provides you with the chance to learn
from mistakes and experience.Look at the chart below for some
suggestions to help you to become a more reflective, and thus
more effective teacher.
