Hewonsixgoldmedalsatvariousinternationalmeetsin2001.In2000hewashonouredwiththeArjuna
AwardandtheprestigiousRajivGandhiKhelRatnaawardin2001.
IntheAirrifleeventatthe2002CommonwealthGames,Manchester,hewonGoldinthePairsevent.Bindra
alsowonSilverintheindividualevent.
Inthe2004AthensOlympics,despitebreakingtheOlympicrecordBindrafailedtowinamedal.Hescored597
inthequalificationroundandwasplacedthirdbehindQinanZhu(599newOlympicRecord)andLiJie
(598).Inthefinals,Abhinavfinishedwith97.6points,lastinthefieldofeight,andwastheonlyplayerbelow
100points.Hissubparfinalsdroppedhimfromthirdtoseventh.[18]
On24July2006,BindrabecamethefirstIndianshootertowinaWorldChampionshipgoldinZagreb.Dr.
KarniSingh'sSilverin1962wasthepreviousbestbyanIndianinaWorldChampionshipmeet.
Atthe2006MelbourneCommonwealthGames,hewontheGoldinthePairseventandtheBronzeinthe
Singlesevent.Abhinavmissedthe2006AsianGamesatDohabecauseofabackinjury.
Afterthesesuccesseshestartedsufferingfromaseverebackinjury,somuchsothathewasunabletocompete
orevenliftarifleforayear,upsettinghispreparationsfortheBeijingGames.However,Bindraputall
speculationtorest,bringingIndiaperhapshisbiggestsportinggloryever.Bindrabookedhisplaceinthe2008
Olympicsbywinningthegoldmedalatthe2006ISSFWorldShootingChampionshipswithascoreof
