What is Criminal Investigation?

Criminal Investigation as a discipline within the field of law
enforcement (criminal justice) that focuses on the solution of
crime at the local, state, and federal levels of government ,
within defined jurisdictional areas that may overlap.

Is investigation is an art or science?

Is an art which deals the identity and location of the offender and
provide evidence of his guilt in a criminal proceedings. As an art
because they used logical observation why crime has been
committed as a science because there is systematic or
chronological process.

OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
Define criminal investigation.
Define the goals of criminal investigation.
Define the basic functions of the criminal investigator.
Understand how to document a crime scene.
Conduct searches for evidence.
Gain a basic knowledge of how to obtain information.

CRIMINAL CASES
The Slender Man Stabbing Case
On May 31, 2014, 12-year-old Peyton Leutner crawled out of the woods to a path where
a bicyclist found her bleeding from 19 stab wounds. Leutner, who survived the attack,
told authorities she was stabbed by two of her 12-year-old friends.
The William Devin Howell Case
On January 30, 2007, William Devin Howell pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of firstdegree manslaughter in connection with the death of 33-year-old Nilsa Arizmendi.
The Murder of Chandra Levy
On May 1, 2001, Washington D.C. intern Chandra Levy disappeared while walking her
dog in Rock Creek Park. A year later, someone else walking a dog found her remains.

On August 13, 2014, two young Amish girls, were kidnapped from their family's roadside

The Joseph McStay Family Murders
On February 4, 2010, Joseph McStay and his entire family vanished, leaving their
Fallbrook, California home locked and their pets outside without food or water.
Cheyanne Jessie: 'Cold-Blooded Murderer'
On Aug. 1, 2015, 25-year-old Cheyanne Jessie of Lakeland, Florida called police to
report missing her father, Mark Weekly, 50, and her daughter Meredith, 6.
She was arrested and charged with their murders less than 24 hours later
The Murder of Carrie and Steven Turner
On Friday, March 6, 2015, Carrie Daley Turner, 52, and Steven Gray Turner, 61, were
found dead at the Landmark Resort on South Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach, South
Carolina.
Burned Alive: Jessica Chambers
On Dec. 6, 2014, Panola County Sheriff's deputies responding to a call about a burning
vehicle found 19-year-old Jessica Chambers engulfed in flames near the vehicle.
