Memsource Guide

Introduction for Admins


Memsource is a CAT (Computer Aided Translation) tool. As with most CAT tools, Memsource can be used to translate,
edit, and also serve as a tool for version control.
As the name CAT tool implies, Memsource is designed to aid with translations and editing. But the software is far
from perfect so there are few steps we have to take to have Memsource work for us.
Things like Setting Up the Project, Uploading the Translations, and Creating New Job listed below
will require an Admin privilege to carry out. But all editors should be familiar with all the process below
(you never know when someone might give you admin privilege and ask you to do something listed
below).
When starting a new project (a new game title) there are few things we need to do before we can get started.

Setting Up the Project


First is to get a Project, Translation Memory (TM), and a Term Base (TB) ready in Memsource.
This task is usually carried out by the managers and they will follow the Create your First Project procedures laid
out by Memsource in the Memsource User Guide found here:

Things to Remember
Things to remember when setting up the Project:
1. Name the Project with the Game Title
a. If multiple Project has to set up for the same game for some reason use the date after the game title

Source Language is Korean


Target Language is English
Make sure Machine Translation is Disabled
Make sure pre-translation is disabled and Pre-translation threshold set to 100%

Preparing an Excel without Translations


In most cases, the Localization team will receive the translation request, upload the file to Memsource, and once
they are done it will be assigned to an Editor for Revision.
But if there is an instance where a Memsource ready file needs to be made then the following steps have to be
followed

When translations are already provided and Translation Memory has not been made you will need to do two things:
1. Upload the translations
2. Prepare a Memsource ready file to start your editing

Uploading the translations


In the example above, the translations are provided so to edit in Memsource we will need to have the Source text
and the Target text imported into the Memsource Translation Memory (TM).
To import to TM you will need to do few things:
1. The excel has to be set up with only the Source text (C) and the Target text (D).
a. If the excel workbook has multiple tabs (worksheets) then all of the worksheets must be copied into one
worksheet in a new workbook.
b. All none essential information like the String ID, Character Names, or any other columns (i.e. different
languages) are not necessary so do not copy them over.
2. The language code has to be placed at the top (KO, EN)
3. Save the file and name the file with something like: gamename_memsource_TM_Date

Pro-tip:
The number of rows in each column should line up if these steps were followed properly.
After following the steps above the strings will need to be imported into the proper TM.
To do so, you will need to do the following:
1. Go to the Translation Memories tab in Memsource Cloud.

2. Select and click the proper game from already available game TM (One should have been made in the Setting
Up the Project section above).

3. Press the Import button and import the file made above and continue with the upload.

Preparing for Editing


Editing can start after the translations have been uploaded to the TM but you will need to do couple of things in
order to start.
1. Prepare a Memsource ready file
2. Create a New Job.

Preparing a Memsource Ready File


To create a Memsource ready file you will need to remember few things.
1. The original doc must stay intact
a. Realistically only thing that should change is the column marked D above in the Things to Remember
section
b. All other information must stay intact
2. Memsource only recognizes Source and Target languages in the TM
3. Source language acts as the index
4. Hidden cells, column, and tabs are not read by Memsource
5. Any Source language being displayed will be replaced by the Target language as long as long as it is in the
TM
So keeping the above information in mind, the Memsource Ready File has to be put into a format where Memsource
only sees the source language and after the source language is edited, the resulting document will display both the
source and target language.
So the Memsource Ready File will:
1. Only show Column marked C from the Things to Remember section above
2. Have the edited text in English display in Column marked D after edits are complete
3. All other information will stay intact
To achieve the requirements above you will need to (in order):
1. Hide all columns that do not contain the source and the target language
2. Copy column containing source language (marked C above) into the column showing the target language
(marked D above) (Yes, at this point you will have two columns displaying Korean)

3. Hide the original Source language column (at this point you will have nothing showing except 1 column of
Korean)
4. Follow the above steps for each tab (worksheet) in the excel that require edits
As seen in the video, there can be exceptions. Starting at around 00:45 in the video, you can see that the document
is not the same as the examples above since there are two sources (KR1 Column and KR2 Column) so these columns
were copied into EN1 and EN2 Columns and all else were hidden.
Pro Tip:
No matter what format the document is in, as long as the following 3 is true the document will come out
fine:
1. 1 string in 1 cell (this is where segmentation rule mentioned above comes in)
2. Source Korean is copied into the corresponding Target English
3. All other content in the file is hidden

Creating New Job in Memsource


Once the Memsource ready has been made, it will need to be uploaded to the appropriate project in Memsource.
To do so you will need to:
1. Select New in the appropriate game project

2. Upload the prepared Memsource ready file by selecting Choose Files


3. Assign it to an Editor
a. Remember if multiple editors are working on the same string than a new job has to be created for each
editor

Things to Remember
Things to remember when setting up the job:
The system Segmentation Rule should be set to 1 Cell = 1 Segment but always double check
Make sure Pre-Translation has been NOT been selected anywhere
