5. Curriculum: An overview of the causes of World War I and the reasons why men
enlisted to fight in the war ( ACDSEH021)

Implementation
Learning Context
Students have learned about Australian identity, and an overview of WWI before beginning to
investigate the causes of WWI. This leads to further study of Australias involvement in WWI,
with particular reference to the Gallipoli Campaign and the ANZACs and their impact on our
stories, symbols and customs.

Procedure
Students to finish worksheet Causes of WWI. Instructions and extension question on slide.
Review answers as a whole class - ask individual students the answers and ask if anyone has
anything to add, Mrs de Byle and I add information if required.
Ask students why do they think it is important to know the causes of the Great War? To avoid it
happening again? To understand the connections between the causes? To justify the war? To
understand the diversity of the causes?
Introduce video and handout MANIAC table for students to fill in during video.

Review table entries as a whole class.
