COURSE DESCRIPTION:

MATH 100 (INTRODUCTION TO CALCULUS)

MIDYEAR TERM, AY 14-15

This four unit course is targeted towards non-mathematics majors. The course covers elementary functions, limits, continuity,
derviatives , integrals, and their applications in real life world problems.
PREREQ: Math 11 and Math 14
COURSE CREDIT: 4 UNITS
METHODOLOGY:
This course utilizes a variety of methods depending on the learning situation at hand. Lectures, discussions, problem solving
exercises (both individual and cooperative in nature), the use of graphing software, and more will be adapted to facilitate the
students learning. The emphasis of this course is for the student to acquire relational understanding of calculus and its applications
particularly in the business setting. Secondary to this would be the achievement of instrumental and conventional understanding of
the different mathematical concepts involved.
OVERALL COURSE OBJECTIVE:
After completion of the course, the student should:
1. appreciate the logical structure of mathematics through inferences and deductive reasoning
2. understand the concepts of derivatives and integrals and their applications in problems which are dynamic in nature.
Students obtain experience in mathematical modeling and solving real world problems.
3. enhance her/is critical thinking and analytical skills. In the words of Professor Joseph Lagowski of the University of Texas,
Austin
We are attempting to educate and prepare students (hire people in the workforce) today so that they are
ready to solve future problems, not yet identified, using technologies not yet invented, based on scientific
knowledge not yet discovered.
Students learn through problem solving and acquire competencies that will aid them in becoming innovative and
systematic problem solvers.

Attendance is required and will be checked regularly. A student who incurs 3 absences will be given a grade of 5.0 if s/he has
not dropped the course before the official day of dropping (University Rule). A student who comes in late twice will be
considered to have incurred 1 absence. Those who come in beyond 20 minutes after the class starts are considered tardy.
Additional materials and notices are expected to be given during the term. Students should have an email address and
contact number for this purpose.
Problem sets, quizzes and assignments will be given and these should be done individually unless it is a cooperative learning
activity (group work). Written work should be done in blue or black ink.
Three long exams and one final exam will be administered.
No make-up quizzes will be given.
No makeup exam will be given. The final exam grade will be used as the score for the missed exam provided that the reason
for missing the exam is valid. Medical certificates with contact numbers of the physician or other legal documents should be
prepared and submitted in order for the student to be excused. NO SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS, NO SUBSTITUTION OF
THE FINAL EXAM GRADE FOR THE MISSED EXAM GRADE. In this case, the missed exam will be given a score of zero.
Complaints and corrections of test results will be entertained within one week after the papers are returned.
