Proctoring

According to the University of Colorado, Denver, proctoring is testing overseen by an

authorized, neutral, proctor, who ensures the identity of the test taker and the integrity of the test
taking environment. The University of the People has a requirement in which every online
student must complete a specified number of proctored examinations before they can graduate
(UOPeople). The main reason for Universities such as UOPeople require students to take
proctored courses, is to reduce to possibility of students cheating for their examinations.
Instructors fear that students who are completing exams online may seek the help of others, or
they may use materials that are not allowed during the examination period (University of
Colorado, Denver).
The UOPeople has outlined a number of criteria that are needed for an appropriate proctor. Some
of these criteria includes:
-

A proctor must be at least 21 years of age. He/she must be a reputable person with
integrity. The proctor cannot be a relative of the students. It is also important that the
proctor have access to a stable and reliable internet access with email service, so that they
can be contacted for verification procedures.
The proctor must be present at the time that the exam is written. If the proctor does not
appear for the exam, the student will not be allowed to take the exam (UOPeople). The
student will also fail the exam and be given an F grade.

A proctor can be added during the registration period. A student will have to click on the adds a
proctor link in the student service section, and enter some basic information of the proctor. This
information includes the following:
-

First and last name

Email Address
Telephone number
Country of Residence
Occupation

However, a student can choose to use an online proctoring service, example ProctorU. A fee
will be charged to use this service.
There are currently three locations that I am thinking of approaching in order to complete my
proctoring courses. These locations are: University of Guyana, Hujjatul Ullama (Islamic School)
or the Principal of a secondary school in my community.
