A. Strategies/Techniques
Discussion/Lecture
B. Motivation
1. The teacher will ask five students to identify the words
below whether it is a verb, a preposition or noun.
1. Candy
2. Misunderstood
3. After
4. Agree
5. Moment
6. Under
7. Before
8. Bake
9. On
10. Accumulate
2. The teacher will give reward for those students who will

C. Presentation:
1. The teacher explains the following:
Simple Sentence consists of one independent clause.
It contains a subject and a verb. It may contain other
elements.
Ex. We took the train because the car broke
down.
Subject refers to what the sentence is about, often the
person or thing that carries out the action of the verb.

The subject usually gives a clear idea about what the

sentence is about. It can be a noun or pronoun.
Independent Clause like major sentence, is a
meaningful group of words containing subject and
predicate.
Verb is known as a doing word. It is concerned with
the action and it is usually essential to the structure of a
sentence. The verb is usually the most important part of
the predicate.
Passive Voice the subject is the recipient of the action
of the verb.
Ex. The ball was thrown by the boy.
Preposition is used to show relationship, such as time
or place between a noun or pronoun and the rest of a
sentence, clause or phrase. The preposition usually
comes before the noun it refers to or governs.
Ex. At, by, in, of, on, to, among, before, behind,
during, through, ahead of, because of, instead of
Phrase usually refers to a group of words that work
together to form a grammatical unit, although, in fact a
phrase may consist of just one word.
Prepositional phrase is a group of related words in
which the main word is a preposition and which functions
like a preposition in a sentence or clause. Thus on the
table is a preposition phrase in which the main word is
the preposition on.

Ex. We waited at the bus stop.

He placed the book on the table.
They walked into the room.
Pattern III: Subject + Verb (Passive Voice)
1. The [water] (in the pool) is heated (by several solar panels).
2. On clear days, their [skin] is tanned (by the sun).
3. Their [eyes] are protected (from the chlorine) (by swim
goggles).
4. Their [spirits] are lifted (after half an hour) (of swimming).

Pattern IV: Sentences with compound elements

Compound Elements consists of two or more subject, verb,

object and preposition. They are joined with the coordinating
conjunctions.
Types of Compound Elements
1. Compound Subject consist of two or more simple
subjects joined by a coordinating conjunction and that
have the same predicate.
Ex. [Mr. Yang], [Mrs. Yang], and their

[daughter] like to go
(Compound subject)

swimming.

2. Compound Verb Phrase it is a predicate that contains

two or more verbs.
Ex. This leisure activity [tones their

muscles] and [relaxes their minds].

(Compound verb phrase)
3. Compound Object more than one object.

Ex. They take their [swimsuits],

[goggles] and [towels] to the pool.
(Compound object)

4. Compound Prepositional Phrase - may have a

compound object (two or more objects). They are made
up of two or more words.
Ex. We saw them fly across our path through
the woods.
At this moment, the sparrow perches in the
oak tree.

They swim [in the evening], [on

Saturday morning], or [on Sunday
afternoon].
(Compound
prepositional phrase)

Symbols use to identify the parts of sentence

These symbols [ ] ____ ( ) are used to identify the parts
of each sentence in patterns III and IV

[Subject]
verb
(prepositional phrases)
D. Generalization:
The students have defined the following words:
1. Subject refers to what the sentence is
about, often the person or thing that carries
out the action of the verb. The subject
usually gives a clear idea about what the

sentence is about. It can be a noun or

pronoun.
2. Verb is known as a doing word. It is
concerned with the action and it is usually
essential to the structure of a sentence. The
verb is usually the most important part of the
predicate.
3. Prepositional phrase is a group of
related words in which the main word is a
preposition and which functions like a
preposition in a sentence or clause. Thus on
the table is a preposition phrase in which the
main word is the preposition on.
The students have differentiated the four types of
compound elements that:

1. Compound Subject consist of two or more

simple subjects joined by a coordinating
conjunction and that have the same predicate.
2. Compound Verb Phrase it is a predicate that
contains two or more verbs.
3. Compound Object more than one object.
4. Compound Prepositional Phrase - may have a
compound object (two or more objects). They
are made up of two or more words.
The students have used these symbols in identifying the
parts of a sentence.
[ ] brackets for subjects.
____ Underline for verbs.
( ) close and open parenthesis for prepositional phrase.
E. Evaluation:
Identify the subject by using [ ], the verb by using ____ and prepositional
phrase by using ( ) of the following sentences.
1. Some of the answers are located in the back of the book.
2. Other answers are found on a web page.
3. Besides textbook exercises, web-based lessons are also
assigned
4. Sentence writing can be sent in the body of an email message.

5. However, original writing of paragraphs and essays has to be

submitted to the professor by email for individual marking.
