INTRODUCTION:
Conventional methods of displaying images to public are using LCD display and dot-matrix
LED board. Propeller LED display is a device that project an image or time as if the images
are floating in the air .The floating image is received because of human eye limitation.
Actually the floating images emerge by synchronizing LEDs blink to form an image at
particular time and rate
The programming of IC AT89S51 is using embedded C .This project consist two main
circuit; motor controlling circuit and LED circuit .9VDC will be used to supply the power for
motor controlling circuit. Then the motor controller circuit will provides power to LED
circuit and DC motor. When DC motor is rotating, the floating image will appear. The
synchronization of DC motor speed and LED blink cause the image visible to human eyes. So
the desired image such as clock, date or symbol can be programmed and displayed.
OBJECTIVES:

To design a display system using LEDs which rotate on a motor

To design a program using Embedded C language
To display clock using LEDs
To develope software that can generate LEDs display with accurate
synchronization and timing

COMPONENTS:

Tools for programming/software

Two power supplies(9v,12v)
Multimeter
PC/Laptop
Soldering iron/solder
Copper Clad
PCB and schematic drawing tools
LEDs (8)
Resistors(8x220ohm ; 2x10kohm)
Capacitors(2x 30pf ; 0.33uf ; 0.1uf ; 10uf )
Optocoupler
Microcontroller(AT89S51)
Crystal oscillator(12Mhz)
BLDC/Brush Motor (2500rpm)
SPST Switch
Connecting wires
Voltage Regulator(7805)
Appropriate software for embedded C language

STEPS:

Take print of circuit on overhead projector (OHP) sheet.

Cut the Copper clad according to the circuit.
Remove the oxidation from Copper clad by rubbing with a scrub.
Print the circuit on Copper clad from OHP sheet by keeping hot iron for few minutes
Dip the Copper clad in a certain solution to remove the copper excepting the portion
below circuit layout markings.
Remove the ink from Copper clad by rubbing the scrub.
Drill holes by using drilling machine at appropriate places for mounting and soldering
the components by a 1mm drill bit.
Circuit path should be tinned by using soldered iron.
Mount the components and start soldering by placing components at correct places.

WORKING:

The IC AT89S51 is programmed.

Programmed AT89S51 will introduce interrupts with certain delay.
The interrupts will be introduced while rotating.
The rotation is done by a Brush DC motor of 2500 rpm.
8 LEDs of red colour are used.
The interrupt detection will be done by Optocoupler.
The resistance were used to protect the LEDs from overheating.
While rotation the LEDs will start blinking with certain delay and thus the floating
image will be formed using concept of Persistence of Vision OR Limitation of
Human eye.

TROUBLESHOOTING:
The components were dry soldered.
The motor was not properly mounted.
Resistance were not connected properly.
Error had been detected in the keil-software which is used to burn the program in IC
AT89S51.
Tracks were shorted.
The PCB was slightly leaned downward due to the battery was mounted on the PCB.

APPLICATIONS:
The propeller display can be used to create floating image of any object.
It can be used for making decorative items.
