Scope This GP provides details of the coating systems to be applied in accordance with TCR-GIS 06-601-1 External coating systems are specified for all atmospheric, corrosion under insulation (CUD, and corrosion under fireproofing (CUF) service conditions for equipment and structures. The specified systems are based on those used previously at TCR with consistently good results. ‘This GP does not include coating requirements for underground pipe, fireproofing, or internal coatings and linings for tanks, vessels, and concrete secondary containment. Normative references The following normative documents contain requirements that, through reference in this text, constitute requirements of this technical practice. For dated references, subsequent amendments to, of revisions of any of these publications do not apply. However, parties to agreements based on this technical practice are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the normative documents indicated below. For undated references, the latest edition of the normative document referred to applies. Symbols and abbreviations For the purpose of this GP, the following symbols and abbreviations apply: CUF Corrosion under fireproofing, cul Corrosion under insulation, DFT Dry film thickness (of a coating). ES External stress corrosion cracking. LMC Liquid metal cracking. MDEA Methyl Diethanolamine HSSE Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental, 4. Coating general requirements All coating systems shall be applied in accordance with the requirements in this GP as well as, the following documentation: 1. Manufacturer’s recommendations 2. TCR-GIS 06-601-1 for application requirements, 3. TCR-SIP 66 for inspection requirements. 4. Applicable standards referenced in this GP. 5 Federal, state, and local codes that address the handling, storage, application and disposal of abrasives, protective coatings, and coating related materials. b. Compliance with health, safety, security, and environmental (HS! consideration of the following: F) regulations requires 1, Use of coatings with less than: a) 0.01% lead (zine dust used in inorganic zine primers shall comply with the requirements of ASTM D-520, Type I) b) 0.01% hexavalent chromium. ©) 0.01% cadmium, 4) 0.01% arsenic 2. Prohibition of coatings containing: a) Coal tar filler (coal tar epoxies). b) Residual amounts of carbon tetrachloride (chlorinated rubbers). 3. Prohibition of products that present unusual toxic or environmental hazards. 5. Exterior coating material selection a. The coating systems appropriate for particular applications are detailed in Annex A. 5 Page 6 of 21 8 January 2009 TCR-GP 06-60-1 Selection of Protective Coatings for Atmospheric Equipment and Structures (Supersedes ETP) b, Annex B details the following for each coating system 1. The required SSPC surface preparation standard. 2. The list of proven products 3. The surface profile requirement. 4, The coating thickness of each coat within the system, ©. The specific coating products listed in Annex B represent TCR’s approved products. This list shall be used as a guide for selection of external coatings, with the following exceptions 1. Ifa coating system is required for a specific project or service that is not covered in Annex B, approval from the BP Coating Specialist shall be obtained. 2. Ifhealth and safety restrictions apply, materials other than those specified in Annex B may be used. The compliant materials shall have comparable performance to those specified in Annex B, and approval from the BP Coating Specialist is required. 6. Prevention of corrosion under insulation and corrosion under fireproofing Corrosion under thermal insulation or fireproofing has typically been found in services that operate under 300°F or in cyclic conditions, particularly at industrial facilities located in coastal regions or that produce chemicals containing chlorides. Equipment design and proper selection of coating and insulation materials should be used to prevent corrosion under thermal insulation (CUI) or corrosion under fireproofing (CUF) in accordance with TCR- GP 06-25. “64. Carbon steel a. In services susceptible to CUI or CUF, inorganic zinc or galvanize shall not be used for protection of carbon steel. These products provide inadequate corrosion protection in a closed or wet environment b. Inorganic zine or galvanize found during CUI or CUF inspections shall be either completely removed or, as a minimum, completely encapsulated utilizing the coating systems specified in Annex A in accordance with the requirements of TCR-GIS 06-601-1 Galvanic reversion of zinc products has occurred in service temperatures above ambient, and zinc products have been found to accelerate corrosion rates rather than inhibiting corrosion of carbon steel under insulation 6.2. Austenitic stainless steel Insulated austenitic stainless steel can be subject to external stress corrosion cracking or, when coated with a material containing a low melting-point metal, liquid metal cracking, a. Proper selection of coating materials shall be used to prevent extemal stress corrosion cracking (ESC) or liquid metal cracking (LMC) in insulated austenitic stainless steel. For the services listed in Annex A, the appropriate coatings listed in Annex B shall be used. b. Coatings selected for austenitic stainless stcel shall not contain zinc, lead, or copper compounds and shall not contain free soluble chlorides or other halides after curing. 5 Page 7 of 21 8 January 2009 TCR-GP 06-60-1 6.3. z Selection of Protective Coatings for Atmospheric Equipment and Structures (Supersedes ETP) Thermal Spray Aluminium (TSA) a. Thermally sprayed aluminium coatings shall be considered for CUI service or high temperature lines exposed to constant wetted service from cooling tower drift zones. Advantages are the service life expectancy is beyond those achievable with organic coatings and has a quick turn around due to the TSA material doesn’t need time to dry. Industry experience indicates that thermally sprayed aluminium is capable of providing superior performance compared to traditional organic coatings, In general thermally sprayed aluminium is more expensive to apply than organic coatings but is more attractive on a whole life-cycle cost basis. b. Thermally sprayed aluminium coatings shall comply with the following: 1, Surface preparation to an SSPC SP-5 2. A minimum sharp angular surface profile of 3 - 5 mils (75 to 125 microns) 3. Aminimum thickness of 12 to 14 mils (300 1 to 355 u) for the protection of steel operating up to 1,000°F (540°C) 4, A sealer coat shall be considered if improved performance is required: a) An epoxy-based sealer for service up to 250°F (120°C). b) _A.silicone aluminium sealer for temperatures higher than 250°F (120°C) c. There are some situations where TSA is not feasible or permissible. Following are scenarios where the selection of TSA for the coating system should be given careful consideration to avoid added cost and schedule duration, 1. Closely nested piping where TSA application to either the piping, field welds or other equipment configurations result in a clearance of less than 12” all around. 2. Locations where abrasive blasting and/or exposed arc or flame are not feasible or permissible. Finish color selection a. Table I lists color requirements at TCR. Deviations to these requirements shall be subject to the approval of the BP Coating Specialist. The information in Table I replaces the color selection table in the ACES specification RR b. Colors in Table 1 are specified with a color number in accordance with FED-STD-59SB, which lists the colors used in government procurement.
