E-learning is an offshoot of information technology that has emerged as a significant development in the 21st century. It has several advantages over traditional classroom learning, such as being self-paced, allowing students to learn from home, and accommodating different teaching methods. However, e-learning also lacks some motivational aspects and social interaction that are benefits of traditional learning. Additionally, traditional classrooms encompass broader educational aims like developing social skills and focusing on students' overall development, which e-learning does not replace.

E -learning is an offshoot of information technology and one of the
significant developments of 21st century. In this essay I will discuss some of the merits and demerits of this type of instruction in relation with the traditional class room teaching and learning system. On line education has enormous advantages namely, it is self paced and self scheduled with flexibility of timings and home learning facility, with avoidance of commuting distances, facing traffic jams and crowds. Furthermore, it is learner centric with due emphasis on the primacy of the needs and aspirations of the learner and meeting the specific learning needs of the student. Moreover it accommodates different teaching methods and techniques simultaneously taking the best out of everything. Learning through internet also promotes self learning, self evaluation of strengths and weaknesses of the learner and self correction of s deficiencies lacunae of learning items. On the other hand, there are some downsides of this system of education in comparison with the conventional teaching. Firstly, it lacks in motivational factor. On the contrary, traditional way of teaching provides a social environment which enables competitive and cooperative learning with in a peer group whereas; an E-learner has to study in isolation sans social interaction. Besides, conventional classroom teaching has a creative approach with healthy and spontaneous interaction with teacher and peers making the teaching learning process a pleasurable experience. Most importantly unlike computer aided learning, the long-established system of class room teaching encompasses broader aims of education, like fostering group skills, social and communication skills, and value based teaching aiming at the full blossoming of the character and personality of the student that is physical, intellectual and emotional developmental aspects of the learner. Hence in my opinion, on- line education, though viewed as a major shift from traditional way of learning, is a poor substitute to conventional class room teaching. (320 words)
