II. Introduction/Overview of the Literature


"Summer Solstice", also known as Tatarin, is a short story that has garnered much attention since its publish date in 1972. Is a short story that
has received recognition both critical and praising. Written by Nick Joaquin, the story takes place in 1850s Philippines during the festival days of
St. John. There is a pro-woman feel to the story, which has garnered a lot of debate and attention considering the setting is in a time where
women must be submissive.

III. Introduction of the author


Nick Joaquin, byname of Nicomedes Joaquin born on May 4, 1917 at Paco, Manila. A Filipino novelist, poet, playwright, biographer, and essayist
writing in English, the National Artist for Literature. Joaquin wrote largely about the Spanish colonial period and the diverse heritage of the Filipino
people. Often he dealt with the coexistence of 'primitive' and 'civilized' dimensions inside the human psyche. After World War II Joaquin worked as
a journalist, gaining fame as a reporter for the Free Press. His most acclaimed play is A Portrait of the Artist As Filipino (1952).

IV. Characters
a. Major Characters
Doa Lupeng Wife of Don Paeng. she is one of the major characters. Her character can be classified as a round character which is her
personality or her thinking changed as the transition of the story flows. From a 'simple, submissive and no complaint-housewife' to a 'wife who
seeks for equality and adoration' real quick.

Don Paeng Husband of Doa Lupeng. He is one of the major characters also who falls on the same classification of character like Doa lupeng.
His personality also changed as the transition of the story flows. From a 'predominant, powerful, and cold husband' to a husband who praise,
adore, and honor his wife.

b. Minor Characters
Guido - Cousin of Don Paeng who gives lupeng the guts of joining Tatarin or the ritual of fertility. His character can be classified as a flat character
as his personality which is a believer of the fact that woman should be adore by man last until the very end.
