This document provides a tutorial for a drilling engineering course, posing several calculation problems related to rig operations and equipment. It asks the student to: 1) Describe responsibilities of a drilling engineer and factors in selecting among rig types. 2) Calculate line tensions, load, and other parameters related to pulling a drillstring from a well. 3) Determine output, input, and efficiency parameters for a diesel engine powering a rig. 4) Calculate volumetric output and horsepower for a triplex pump operating at given stroke, speed, and pressure.

1. Describe three (3) responsibilities of drilling engineer.
2. Describe two (2) common reasons for selecting/ choosing the following rigs: a) Jack up b) Semi-submersible c) Drillship 3. Differentiate between top drive and rotary table rotary system. 4. A drillstring with a buoyant weight of 200,000 lbs must be pulled from the well. A total of 8 lines are strung between the crown block and the travelling block. Assuming that a four sheave, roller bearing system is being used. Calculate the following parameters: a) The tension in the fast line b) The tension in the deadline c) The vertical load/actual derrick load on the rig when pulling the string 5. A rotary rig uses diesel engine for generating the rig power requirement. Calculate the following parameters: a) Output power of the engine b) Input power of the engine c) Overall efficiency of the engine Given data: Output torque of engine (ft-lbs) = 2,350 Engine speed (rpm) = 1,800 Fuel consumption rate (gal/hr) = 53.1 Heating value of Diesel (BTU/lb) = 19,000 Density of Diesel (lb/gal) = 7.2 6. Calculate the following, for a triplex pump having 7 in. Liners and 12in. stroke operating at 110 spm and a discharge pressure of 2000 psi. a) The volumetric output at 90% efficiency (gal/min) b) The horsepower output of the pump when operating under the condition above Given: 1 gal = 231 cubic inches
