In-class Exercise - Solution

State 1:
V 4
1 0.8m3 / kg
m 5

f @110C 0.001052m3 / kg ; g @110C 1.2094m3 / kg

Table A-4: f 1 g sat. mixture, x 0.66
u f @110C 461 .27 kJ / kg ; u fg @110C 2056 .4kJ / kg

u1 1818.494kJ / kg

State 2
Both mass and volume are constant, then 2 1 0.8m3 / kg g @ T 110C
Note that the saturation temperature does not keep constant during this phase-change
process because pressure in the rigid tank (fixed boundaries) increases as the volume
of the vapor increases.
In case of a cylinder-piston assembly with moving piston, the pressure, and then the
saturation temperature remain unchanged during the phase-change process.
Interpolation between g and u g in Table A-4:

u2 2532.9kJ / kg
The final saturation temperature can also be determined by interpolation between g
and Tsat .
