lntroduction

1.1

About this documentation

GKN Stromag AG strongly emphasises that the technical details such as dimensions, weights in kg , tolerances,
tightening torques and units required for assembly , such as securing means and lubricants, must be obtained
from the dimensionai drawing.
Should this information be necessary during assembly, a corresponding point in these mounting instructions will
be referenced on the dimensionai drawing.
A dimensionai drawing is supplied as a separate document and can be requested additionally from our aftersales seNices, see section 11.1. For this, the information on ordering spare parts is required, see section 11.2.
For the purpose of simplification, the following designations are used in the mounting instructions.
Mounting instructions wi ll be referred to as documentation in the following.

The GE coupling will be referred to as coupling in the following.

This documentation makes it easier for the operator to familiarise himself with the coupling and to use it correctly.
The documentation contains important instructions on how to operate the coupling safely, properly and economically. ObseNing the documentation helps to avoid dangers, to reduce repair costs and down times and to increase the reliability as well as the operating life of the coupling. Read the documentation carefully and thoroughly.

Transport and storage

3.1

Special safety gu idelines

DANGER
Risk of accidents when standing under suspended loads
When lifting , lowering and pivoting loads, there is a risk to life due to parts fa lling down or moving in
an uncontrolled manner.
lll> Heavy parts of the coupling have threaded holes for the safe fixing of suitable slinging equipment.

Observe the information for the slinging points provided.

lll> Threaded bores on components are only intended to be used for lifting the individuai components

or assembly groups, and not for lifting the entire machine.

CAUTION
Risk of accidents due to non-observance of the safety guidelines
There is a risk of accidents if the generai safety guidelines are not observed.
lll> Ali safety guidelines must be observed , see section 2.

3.1.1

Criticai centre of gravity points

CAUTION
Risk of accidents caused by moving loads when lifting, lowering and pivoting
As a result of the design, it is not always possible to move loads attached to the slinging points in a
safe centre of gravity. A change of position can lead to an uncontrolled movement of the load that
may then cause injuries.
lll> Perform the lifting, lowering and pivoting of loads only with great caution. This avoids greater ac-

celerating forces.
Transport

3.2

NOTE

Be particularly careful when transporting the coupling in order to avo id damage caused by external
forces or careless loading and unloading . Depending on the type and duration of the transportation ,
corresponding transportation locks have been provided. Transport locks must not be removed before
assembly of the coupling.
During transportation , avoid :
lll> water condensation resulting from severe temperature fluctuations
lll> impacts

3.2.1

Unpacking

The transportation route is decisive in terms of the type of packing . The information marked an the packing must
be observed.

CAUTI ON
Risk of accidents caused by components falling down
In some cases, the assembly groups are not positively locked to each other.
~

Always hook on and lift the assembly groups individually.

RECYCLING
Dispose of the packaging materia! according to the local guidelines properly and in an environmentally-friendly way.

3.3

Scope of delivery

On receipt, check the delivery far completeness using the packing list. Possible damage during transportation
and/or missing parts must be reported immediately; see section 11 .1 far the address.
The maximum transmitted torque must be checked by the machine or engine manufacturer.
Fixing screws far assembly of the connector are not included in the scope of delivery.

3.3.1

4.3.1

Tightening torques
CAUTI ON
Danger of accident due to lubrication of the thread
The tightening torques listed in the dimensionai drawings referto the dry or lightly oiled condition of
the screw connection (coefficient of friction ~tot = O, 14 ).
Additionallubrication of the thread causes a considerable change to the coefficient of friction and results in tightening conditions which could destroy the screw connection.
Detective screw connections may lead to parts loosening, being slung away and severe or fatai injuries .
.,. Only assemble the screw connections in a dry or lightly oiled condition .
.,. Do not lubricate the thread .
CAUTION
Risk of accidents due to detective screw connections
Detective screw connections may lead to parts loosening , being slung away and severe or fatai injuries .
.,. Guidelines of the manufacturer, machine or engine manufacturer for the screw connections must
be adhered to .
.,. Only use screws of the required size , strength and quantity.
.,. Observe the tightening torque .
..,. Only use the specified liquid screw locking agent.

NOTE
Tightening torques for the fasten ing screws for assembly of the coupling on the connecting part or the
switchable clutch can be obtained from the mounting or operating instructions of the machine manufacturer.

Tightening torques can be obtained from the dimensionai drawing , see section 4.3.
The maximum transmitted torque must be checked by the machine or engine manufacturer.
Only screws and washers of the quality stated in the dimensionai drawing should be used.

Assembly

6.1

Special safety guidelines

CAUTI ON
Risk of accidents due to non-observance of the safety guidelines
There is a risk of accidents if the generai safety guidelines are not observed.
IJi. Ali safety guidelines must be observed, see section 2.

6.2

Pre-mounting condition

The couphng will be delivered fully assembled and with transport locks provided. and fo1 assembly, provided
that the hub must not be heated above 85
only needs to not be disassembled.
The fastening screws for attaching the coupling to the connector are not included in the scope of delivery. They
must correspond to the operator specifications of the complete system .

oc.

The delivery state may deviate as an exception from the ru le.

6.3

Conditions for assembly and fixing

The following conditions for assembly and fixing must be observed:

Obtain the bindmg dimensions from the dimensionai drawing, see section 4.3.

Observe the technical specifications, see section 4.

During paintmg work, the coupling has to be covered so that rubber parts cannot make contact with the paint
or lacquer.

6.3.1

Special tools

To install the coupling in the drive equipment, no special tool is necessary . The disassembly devices necessary
for the replacement of elastomer elements is included in the replacement element delivery. These assembly devices can be ordered from GKN-Stromag Spare Parts Sales Department as required, see section 11 .

6.3.2

Assembly precision

The coupling can absorb displacements in axial , rad iai and angular directions. In order to keep the load of t he
elastomer elements (1O) and the connected machines as low as possible, the machines must be aligned with
each other as accurately as possible. Even the slightest offset of the mating parts of the customer's machine to
each other leads to an increased loads on the coupling and the assembly groups attached.
Dtsplacement that occurs as a resu lt of the thermal expansion during operation of the machine, must already be
considered here.
In order to counteract negative effects, such as:
increased wear

increased risk of overheatmg

greater risk of defects due to larger loads

increased energy consumption

With incorrect posit1oning of the mating parts of the customer's machine to each other, the alignment tolerances
must be fulfilled , see section 4.1 and section 4.5.

6.3.3

Tightening torques

The tightening torques can be obtained from the dimensionai drawing , see section 4 .3.

"z", see figure on the right, between the installed coupling and housing is large enough
to mount the cylindrical pins. Othrwise, the
cylindrical pins must be pushed into the heated hub before it is raised.

1. Remove any grease or corrosion protection agent from the bore of the hub (1).
2. Check the fitting surfaces of the hub and shaft for impurities, burs or sharp edges. lf necessary, remove any impurities, burs or sharp edges.

Determining the
temperature for
expanding

1. Determine expanding temperature data for the hub (1) on the basis of the diagram , see
section 4 .6.

Shrink fitting the

hubs

1. Check that the parallel key (104) is positioned correctly in the shaft (101 ).
~

ATTENTION

~ Risk of accid ents due to hot surfaces

input and output
sides

ATTENTION

~ Damage to th e coupling due to assembly

groups aligned incorrectly

Assembly groups aligned together incorrectly lead to
larger loads and wear, which could lead to defects or
even the destruction of the coupling .
~

Alignment tolerances generally must be maintained

Displacements that occur as a result of the thermal

expansion during operation of the machine, must already be considered here.

NOTE
Assembly control dimensions X and Y can be
obtained from the product data, see section 4.1 .

The product designation for some components is done through the laminated protective label.
These labels constst of a self-adhesive polyester foil, for wh ich the print image is protected
from external effects by a transparent foil. As the products are partially laminated only after
the designation, the labels are equipped with a second, lightly removable laminated protective foil. This can be easily removed after lamination using a handy tap. lf the laminated protective foil is not removed, it automatically comes away after 1 to 2 years, as it is not equipped with a long-lasting glue.

8.3

RECYCLING

Dispose of components as well as auxiliary and operating materials according to the local guidelines
in a correct and environmentally-friendly way.

Generai points

A visual inspectton must be carried out during ali maintenance and servicing tasks. Observe the following in the
process:

porous surfaces of the elastomer elements (indicates hardness) ,

superficial cracks in the elastomer,

deep cracks in the elastomer volume with fab ric escaping.

With distinctive signs of wear, e.g. , excessive brittleness of the elastomer or deeper cracks with fabric escaping ,
the elastomer elements in the sel must be replaced, see section 8.5.
8.4

Maintenance and inspection intervals

The couplings do not requ ire any special maintenance. The flexible parts generally represent the safety-related
rated break point of a drive train. Overstressing should lead to wear of the flexible coupling element and protect
the complete system against unforeseeable damage. As a result of the different operating cond itions and loading, signs of use can be seen on the rubber following longer operating times. This appears most frequently as:

porous surfaces of the elastomer elements (indicate hardness),

superficial cracks in the elastomer,

deep cracks in the elastomer volume with fab ric escaping.
