PERMEAMETER SYSTEM (RPS 700)
The RPS 700 system provides a versatile facility to carry out unsteady state and steady state
relative permeability studies for liquid/liquid and liquid/gas at reservoir conditions of
temperature and pressure. The liquid phases are injected and recirculated though the sample at
different constant flow rates while the gas phase is injected at constant flow rate. An optional
Nitrogen gas line permits to inject nitrogen though the sample either at constant gas flow rate or
at constant pressure. The computer controlled system is provided with a unique software that
allows for operation both manual and automatic modes where all key components can be
controlled including pump, valves, video capturing and data acquisition. A test sequencer also
permits to program and run test sequences automatically. The core holder, air operated valves,
produced fluid separator and necessary plumbing are mounted in an air bath that has been
designed to provide easy access of all components. The unique high temperature fluid
recirculation triple pump system presents an unprecedented solution to generate continuous,
pulse free fluid flow rate of one or more fluids through a sample while maintaining a constant
pressure at the outlet of the sample. The automatic confining pump generates and maintains

FORMATION DAMAGE AND WELL TREATMENT

EVALUATION SYSTEM (FDS 350)
The FDS350 system enables to perform (a) liquid permeability measurement, (b) static filtration
tests, (c) mud invasion evaluation and (d) stimulation tests on a formation sample at reservoir
conditions of temperature and pressure. This instrument can be configured for the evaluation of
the effect of different fluids on rock permeability such as drilling fluids (water-based or oilbased mud), cement effluents, chemical wash treating fluids and acid corrosive treating fluids.
Initial permeability, return permeability, brine sensitivity, critical flow velocity, acid
stimulation, mud filtrate invasion can be monitored with this system. Drilling mud tests are
performed under realistic field conditions by flowing the fluids tangentially to the face of the
core, thanks to a special leak-off core holder. The system is configured with a mud recirculation
pump based on recirculating pump and a stirring accumulator for the mud to perform dynamic
filtration tests so as to study erosion effects induced by the fluid flowing across the core face
which contains proppant and other particulates. The mud pump flow rate of 6 l/min max ensures
an efficient shear rate to simulate the real operating conditions. The computer controlled system
is provided with a unique software that allows for operation both manual and automatic modes
where all key components can be controlled including pump, valves and data acquisition. A test
sequencer also permits to program and run test sequences automatically. The coreholder, air

AGING CELL APPARATUS (ACA 700)

The apparatus is designed for aging core samples with crude oil so as to restore its reservoir
wettability before being used for a SCAL study. The base version is delivered with five core
units. The aging method entails first saturating a cleaned (and thus water wet) core plug with
brine. The brine is then displaced by crude oil until representative initial water saturation is
achieved. During this process the smaller pores remain water filled, whereas the oil invades the
remainder of the pore space, leaving thin water films on the pore walls and in crevices. Finally,
the core containing crude oil and connate water is left for many weeks at reservoir temperature
and pressure. It is at this stage that wettability changes may occur in the oil-invaded pores.
However, these changes are dependant upon the stability of the water wet films, trapped
between the rock surface and the oil. The pore walls can only become oil-wet if contacted by oil
due to the rupture of these films. In this case the core will have achieved a mixed wettability
state status.

IMBIBITION AND DRAINAGE AMOTT CELLS

ADVANCED ROCK ANALYSIS

The spontaneous imbibition Amott test consists of placing an oil saturated core sample in an
Amott cell which is filled up with brine for a period of time. The oil expelled from the core
spontaneously can be measured accurately by reading the graduation on top of the cell.
Inversely, the spontaneous drainage Amott test consists of immersing a brine saturated core
sample into an Amott cell which is filled up with oil. The brine expelled from the core
spontaneously can also be determined by reading the graduation on the bottom of the cell. The
Amott cell includes a sealed glass cell for the core sample and a graduation tube to measure the
volume of fluid expelled from the core. The imbibition Amott cell stands by itself on a table
while the drainage Amott cell is maintained using a dedicated stand. Optional high temperature
Amott cells are also available.

AUTOMATIC IMBIBIOMETER
The imbibiometer is an automated computer controlled system capable of performing
spontaneous imbibition of oil and water into up to ten rock samples. Fluid production data
collected during this measurement is used to determine the volume of oil and water expelled
from the rock sample during respective imbibition and drainage tests. Ten Amott cells with
saturated samples inside are placed on a fixed stand and a movable video camera mounted on a
linear actuator allows for the automatic reading of the produced fluids in each of the ten
graduated burettes of the Amott cells. The water / oil interface height in each burette is recorded
in the computer at a selectable time interval. The video software automatically determines the
water/oil interface height and calculates the fluid produced during the test. Video retrieval
facilities allow for visualizing the spontaneous imbibibition experiments in an accelerated
mode. The imbibiometer can also be configured with a controlled temperature air bath when
imbibition tests have to be conducted at high temperature.

GAS ADSORPTION ISOTHERM SYSTEM (GADIS)

The GADIS instrument is designed to measure the gas adsorption isotherm of a shale / coal
sample. In other words, it consists of measuring the mass of gas adsorbed in a sample at various
pressures and at a constant temperature using the volumetric method. The apparatus is fully
automated, with computer controlled gas injection, pressure measurement and data acquisition.
A test shale or coal sample is crushed and then sieved through 40-120 US mesh screens. Then
80-100 grams of the sieved sample is tested within one of the test cells. Each cell can be used to
test pressures up to 10,000 psi and to test temperatures up to 175C. Gas pressures in the sample
cells and reference cell are accurately measured to determine pressure changes in sample cell
resulting from gas adsorption. The measurement sequence is fully automated allowing two,

CORE FLOOD SYSTEM FOR CHEMICAL INJECTION

(CHEMFLOOD)
The Chemflood allows for various chemical flooding tests including polymer flooding,
Alkaline-Surfactant flooding and foam injection. Those tertiary methods improve oil recovery.
Polymers increase the viscosity of injected fluid and decrease the oil/water mobility ratio.
Surfactant and alkali reduce the interfacial tension between oil and the injected aqueous
formulation. Foam improves the sweep efficiency of surfactant injected into fractured
reservoirs. The Chemflood device is ideal to understand the effects of chemical injection
compatibility and assess the various chemicals to be injected at reservoir conditions. Change in
permeability, displacement efficiency and incremental oil recovery due to polymer injection can
be studied with this setup. Typical configuration of a chemflood system includes injection
pump, four fluid transfer vessels, pressure tapped coreholder, forward and backward injection

SLIM TUBE SYSTEM (STS 700)

ADVANCED ROCK ANALYSIS

The slim tube system is used to obtain, dynamic miscibility information at reservoir conditions.
The gas to be tested is injected at a desired pressure through the slim tube previously cleaned
and saturated in oil by means of a high pressure pump. A back pressure regulator maintains a
constant pressure inside the system. The effluents flowing from the slim tube can be observed
through a capillary sight glass tube. They are then expanded to atmospheric pressure and
temperature through a back pressure regulator. The volume of liquid effluents is then monitored
continuously using a digital volume measuring detector while the produced gas is measured by
a wet gas meter. The recovery curve is then plotted using the raw data obtained during the
different miscible displacement experiments. Additional components such as density meter and
gas chromatograph may be added to extend the capabilities of the instrument.

RISING BUBBLE APPARATUS (RBA 700)

The RBA test is a reliable and fast way to determine the minimum miscibility pressure (MMP)
during a vaporizing gas drive injection study. The method involves direct visual observation of
the behaviour of a injected gas bubble rising into a column of reservoir oil. Under miscible
conditions, the bubble disappears before it reaches the top; under immiscible conditions, the
bubble is visible throughout its flow. The cell is filled with distilled water. Enough oil is
injected into the cell to displace all but a short column of water in the cells lower end. Next, a
small bubble of gas of the desired composition is launched into the water. The buoyant force on
the bubble causes it to rise through the column of water, then through the water/oil interface. As
the bubble rises through the oil, its shape and motion are observed and photographed with two
cameras. Between 3 and 30 seconds are needed for the bubble to rise the length of the oil
column. After two or three bubbles have risen through the column of oil, the used oil is replaced
with fresh oil. For a gas / oil pair, rising bubble experiments are repeated over a range of
pressures. From the pressure dependance of the behaviour of the rising bubbles, MMP is
inferred.

HASSLER COREHOLDER (HAS SERIES)

The HAC Series core holders are standard Hassler type core holders used for fluid flow testing.
With the coreholder assembled and the sleeve in place the core is inserted into the loading end.
The platen is then pushed in and held in place by the cap which can be screwed on by hand and
allows 50 mm adjustement. Further adjustment is possible with the use of interchangeable
spacers fitted to the loose platen. An inlet and outlet distribution plug allows fluids and gases to
be injected through the core sample. A unique feature of the HAC series core holder is that the
sleeve remains in place and the core is loaded from one end without having to drain or refill the
confining fluid. By releasing the confining radial pressure and unscrewing the end plug, the core
sample can be easily removed without exposing it to the annulus fluid. The core holders can be
provided to have interchangeable core diameters. The coreholder can be equipped with a
number of pressure taps molded in the sleeve at discrete locations required by the end user.
This design allow to monitor the pressure drop along the length of the core sample during fluid
flow tests. Electrical pressure tap can also be provided to monitor the resistivity of the core
sample during a permeability test.

PRESSURE TAPPED HASSLER COREHOLDER

(PT-HAS SERIES)
The PT-HAC Series core holders are standard Hassler type core holders which are equipped
with a number of pressure taps molded in the sleeve at discrete locations required by the end
user. This design allows to monitor the pressure drop along the length of the core sample during
fluid flow tests. With the coreholder assembled and the sleeve in place the core is inserted into
the loading end. The platen is then pushed in and held in place by the cap which can be screwed
on by hand and allows 50 mm adjustement. Further adjustment is possible with the use of
interchangeable spacers fitted to the loose platen. An inlet and outlet distribution plug allows
fluids and gases to be injected through the core sample. A unique feature of the HAC series
core holder is that the sleeve remains in place and the core is loaded from one end without
having to drain or refill the confining fluid. By releasing the confining radial pressure and
unscrewing the end plug, the core sample can be easily removed without exposing it to the
annulus fluid. The core holders can be provided to have interchangeable core diameters.

HYDROSTATIC COREHOLDER (HYC SERIES)

The HYC Series core holders are standard hydrostatic type core holders in which radial and
axial confining pressures are common. These core holders are routinely used for gas and liquid
permeability testing and water flooding experiments. The coreholder has a fixed platen at one
end over which the rubber sleeve is mounted and located in the other end of the sleeve is a
floating platen connected via a diameter tubing passing through the outside. For variable
length cores, this design insures solid contact between the platen and core sample. To change a
core sample the confining fluid must be drained off and the knurled screwed ring removed by
rotating anti clockwise by hand. This will withdraw the fixed platen together with the sleeve,
core and floating platen. After removal of the two platens from the sleeve the core can be
withdrawn. Loading a new core sample is carried out in the reverse order. The advantage of this
type of coreholder is that the overburden pressure acts on the end of the core as well as the
diameter. The coreholder can be equipped with a number of pressure taps molded in the sleeve
at discrete locations required by the end user. This design allow to monitor the pressure drop
along the length of the core sample during fluid flow tests. Electrical pressure tap can also be
provided to monitor the resistivity of the core sample during a permeability test.

AMBIENT CONDITIONS TWO PHASE VIDEO SEPARATOR

(2 PHASE VSE A )
The video separator is a precision device used for separating and determining the oil, brine or
gas volumes that are produced from a core sample during a two phase relative permeability test.
It consists of a separation bore used for collecting and separating produced fluids under gravity
and a measurement bore used for visualising the two phases fluid interface at room conditions.
The measurement bore consists of a glass tube to allow for sample visibility. Placing a light
behind the tube allows easy discernment of the two phases interface level. Measurement of
produced fluids during the displacement test is performed with a video camera which monitors
the position of the interface of the two fluids produced from the core sample in the measurement
bore of the separator. The position of the interface is directly proportional of the volumes of
fluids produced from the core sample and so of the change in the core saturation. The high

HIGH PRESSURE HIGH TEMPERATURE THREE PHASE

VIDEO SEPARATOR (3 PHASE VSE 700)
The three phase visual separator is a unique tool available on the market capable of
separating, visualizing and measuring the heights of water/oil and oil/gas interfaces so as to
determine the produced liquids and gases from core flooding experiments under reservoir
conditions. The device consists of a two bore vessel and a computer controlled video system.
The two bores are connected to each other. The first separator bore collects and separates the
produced phases while the second visual measurement bore allows for the water/oil and
oil/gas interfaces to be clearly observed. Three high resolution video cameras monitor in real
time the produced phases and a computer station automatically determines and records the
heights of the water/oil and oil/gas interfaces. Changes in core saturations versus time can be
derived from these interface heights and stored in a data file for further treatment. These
separators are available in stainless Steel or titanium alloy materials.

BENEFITS
* The separator is a compact tool which can be easily installed into core flooding air baths.
* The full visibility of the produced phases enables the end user to simultaneously get the phase volume
changes and the real time pictures of the water/oil and oil/gas interface heights. Cross checking between
the actual images and calculated data is then possible.
* The use of three high resolution cameras to monitor a total height of 10 cm of produced fluids allows for
very accurate measurement of the interfaces and thus the volume changes.

ADVANCED ROCK ANALYSIS

GAS / LIQUID SEPARATION CHAMBER

The separation chamber allows for separating gas and liquid phases from an effluent exiting
the BPR. The gas phase escapes from a top outlet port while the liquid phase is directed to a
bottom outlet port. The chamber uses an internal piston which opens an outlet gas port in
case of gas or opens an outlet liquid port in case of liquid. This device is particular useful
when the fluid to be sampled contains a gas phase. After being separated the gas can be
measured with a gas meter and the liquid can be collected using a fraction collector.

BACK PRESSURE REGULATOR (BPR)

ADVANCED ROCK ANALYSIS

Vinci offers back pressure regulators designed to regulate the pressure in fluid flow studies. The
BPR consists of two chambers separated by a piston with a needle connected to it on the lower
side. The upper chamber receives the gas dome pressure and the lower chamber the process
pressure. The BPR acts a comparator. When the dome pressure is higher than the process
pressure the needle seals off the pressure and maintains the pressure. Inversely when the process
pressure exceeds the dome pressure the needle opens up and the excess process fluid flows out.
That way, on continuous flow these 2 stages are looped continuously and the process pressure is
balanced to the dome controlled constant value.

HYDRAULIC INTENSIFIER (HI SERIES)

ADVANCED ROCK ANALYSIS

The HI series are dual cavity cylinders equipped with a low pressure (LP) bore at one end and a
high pressure (HP) bore at the other end. The pistons in each cylinder bore are connected by a
solid rod. When pressurized fluid enters the larger bore, the fluid in the smaller bore is
compressed to a pressure multiplied by the ratio of areas on the two pistons. Consequently,
pressures up to 150Kpsi can be achieved by using a commercially available lower pressure (10
Kpsi) pump. Material of construction is either stainless steel or titanium.
