The Crucible

Act Four Questions. All questions are in order of events in Act Four.
1. Why, do you think, are Tituba and Sarah Good hoping the Devil is coming for them? 2. How long have the accused been sitting in jail? 3. Why is Reverend Hale urging those in jail to confess their sins? 4. Who has vanished? Where did they go, and what did they take? Why do you think they vanished? 5. What rumor is there about Andover? 6. Why is Parris worried to hang Rebecca Nurse and John Proctor? 7. Why does Hale claim, There is blood on my head ? 8. What effect have the witchcraft accusations had on the townwhat has happened to the children, livestock, and crops? 9. What has happened to Giles Cory? Why did he refuse to answer to his indictment? 10. Why does Proctor claim, I cannot mount the gibbet like a saint. It is a fraud. I am not that man ? Why will he not just confess and save himself? 11. What does Proctor mean when he says, How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name! 12. Miller writes that after tearing up his confession, Proctor is weeping in fury, but [standing] erect. What kind of man is Proctor at this moment? 13. Explain what John Proctor might mean when he says, You have your magic now, for now I do think I see some shred of goodness in John Proctor.

14. Explain what Elizabeth means as, with a "cry," she calls out "[Proctor] have his goodness now. God forbid I take it from him!" 15. What does Miller accomplish by closing the play with the simile: "the drums rattle like bones in the morning air"? 16. Do you think John Proctor won a victory by his refusal to compromise his principles? Why or why not? Was this only a personal victory for Proctor, or did it benefit the community? 17. Besides the 1950s, what other historical events can you think of whose events might be similar to those in the play? 18.
