List 5.1: Short (CVC) vs Long (CVCe)

In spelling this week, we are beginning to look at the vowel a. This week
we will focus on the difference between the short a sound () like in cat and
the long a sound () like in cake. However we will only look at the pattern
of CVCe for the long a sound. Remember the CVC pattern is associated
with a vowel having the short sound. When an e is added to the end of this
pattern, the vowel changes from the short sound to the long sound. For
example, mad is the CVC pattern and the a is the short sound. When you
add an e, it becomes made and the a turns into the long sound.
Students should complete the necessary activities for the assigned words to
be turned in by Friday. If it helps them, students can also choose to sort
their words by cutting them out and sorting them into three categories:
words that fit the CVC pattern, words that fit the CVCe pattern, and words
that are an oddball because they dont fit the conventional rule. Sorting the
words will help your child learn the new patterns and rules associated with
these words as opposed to just memorizing the words themselves.

the words into the dialogue you have with your child and they will
