Experiment 1
Tension Test on Mild Steel
Aim:
elasticity

To study behaviour of mild steel under tension & to determine modulus of

Apparatus:

Vernier Calliper, extensometer, scale, UTM

Materials: Specimen of mild steel (diameter = 16mm, length = 80 mm)

Theory:

Many of mechanical properties of material are studied by performing

tension test. Stress of a material is defined as the ratio of resistance
offered by material against deformation against cross section area of
material.
Stress = Force (P) / Area ( A)
Liner strain is defined as the ratio of change in length to the original
length when load is applied to member along length.
Stress vs. Strain diagram shows following points

:-

1. Proportional Limit : - Unto this point , Hooks law is obeyed i.e. Stress
Strain
2. Elastic Limit: - It is the point beyond which material doesnt regain
its original shape.
3. Yield Point :- When Material is loaded beyond this point ...

Tension Test on Cast Iron

Aim:
Apparatus:

To determine the ultimate stress of cast iron.

Vernier Calliper, Scale etc

Machine:

Universal Testing Machine

Material:

Specimen of Cast Iron

Theory:

Ultimate tensile stress is the maximum normal stress to which

material is
subjected. Load is maximum at this normal stress.
It is defined as the ratio of maximum load to original cross section
area of material
Ultimate Tensile Stress = Ultimate Load / Cross Section Area

Procedure:

1. Measure diameter of specimen at 3 different points (d1, d2, d3)

2. Mark gauge length of specimen.
3. Place the specimen in jaws of UTM.
4. Load the specimen till it falls with the loading of 10mm/min.
5. Note down the load when the specimen fails.
6. Measure the diameter at failure section.
