General
Introduction

This chapter contains the definitions and acronyms of the terms used in this document.

Baggage

The terms baggage, baggage items and bags are all used in this document and, for
all intents and purposes, are considered synonymous.

Definitions

The table below contains definitions relevant to this document.

Term
Normal
baggage

Odd-size

Out-ofgauge
(OOG)

Definition
Normal or regular baggage is considered to be either luggage,
suitcases, trunks, boxes or bags of a more or less rectangular shape, not
being odd-size (see below).
Normal baggage also fits within the general dimensions applicable to
each specific baggage handling area (see Specific Terms and Conditions
on pages 5, 7, and 9).
Normal baggage can be of rigid shape (hard-shell suitcase) or
deformable within limits (duffel or equipment bags).
Odd-size baggage is baggage which clearly and visibly:
Is able to roll or runs a risk of rolling
Is open or easily opened on its own
Has protruding or hooked edges
Contains live creatures
Contains liquids, chemicals, noxious/poisonous or
flammable/explosive substances
Is fragile (i.e. the casing, not the contents)
May damage personnel and/or the baggage handling system through
sharp or pointed edges
Is constructed of multiple loosely attached items.
Examples of odd-size baggage:
Trolleys, buggies, (parts of) child booster seats
Rolled sleeping bags
Cans of paint
Animal kennels
Unlocked, unsecured toolboxes.
Out-of-gauge baggage is normal baggage which either exceeds or falls
below the physical dimensions length, width, height and weight
permitted for automated baggage handling (see Specific Terms and
Conditions on pages 5, 7, and 9 for each areas permitted dimensions).

Specification of Baggage Source Message (BSM)

Policy

All Baggage Source Messages (BSMs) sent to the automated baggage handling system
of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol pertaining to baggage items to be processed by the
baggage handling system must comply with the specifications in this document. This
compliance is required for Local, Terminating and Transfer BSMs as well as BSM

processing of baggage items by the baggage handling system of Amsterdam Airport
Schiphol.

Non-compliance

Non-compliance with this specification may cause errors or complete failure in

automated baggage handling.
NOTE: the BHS of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is not capable of informing senders of
BSMs directly and instantly of non-compliance.

BSM Element
specification

All BSMs must at least comply with the BSM Specification (BSM Version 1) in [IATA
PSCRM] Recommended practice (RP) 1745, section 4.
Furthermore, all BSMs must contain the elements described in the following table and
comply with the stated conditionality.

BSM change and
delete protocol

In cases where the information in a previously sent BSM requires changes or has
become obsolete (e.g. when re-routing a passenger or re-labelling a baggage item),
BSM data may be changed or deleted using the protocols below:
If BSM data needs to be
Deleted

Then
A BSM must be sent with:

Changed

the Change of Status Identifier DEL;

the corresponding Baggage Tag Number in
the .N element.
A BSM must be sent with:

Changed (deprecated method)

the Change of Status Identifier CHG;

the corresponding Baggage Tag Number in
the .N element;
changed data in the corresponding elements.
Note: this excludes the .N element!
Firstly, a BSM must be sent with:
the Change of Status Identifier DEL;
the corresponding Baggage Tag Number in
the .N element.
Secondly, a new BSM must be sent, containing
the correct data.
Note: changing the order of these events will
lead to deletion of the sent BSM and may cause
baggage mishandling.
