Universal Testing Machines For Metals

Table-top Q-Series Universal Testing Machines

Tensile testing is the most commonly used test to determine mechanical

properties of metals. Electromechanical testing instruments are widely used
throughout the metals industry for evaluating important properties such as
Tensile strength, Youngs modulus of elasticity, yield strength, Poissons ratio,
elastic and plastic deformation, and strain hardening behavior.
Also many components such as springs, pipes, containers, etc. rely on
compression tests that provide data on force versus deformation. The
mechanical requirements for many metals are typically specied as tensile
strength, yield point, and % elongation in addition to other properties.

Specimen Grinding System which removes the cold hardened edge within a short time and guarantees a high accuracy of the specimens, is available.
www.WorldofTest.com/blankingpress.htm

A test specimen is the most important

component of tensile testing for it determines
the actual physical properties of the material
being tested. The specimen must conform to
exact physical dimensions and must be free
of induced cold working or heat distortion.
Qualied laboratory personnel and accurately
calibrated tensile machines are important, but
the ultimate test results are based on the quality
and accuracy of the test specimen.
A highly skilled machinist, a precision milling
machine and considerable hand nishing can
achieve the required congurations of the test
specimen. However, the slow milling cutter
speeds create heavy chip loads and can induce
severe internal distortion to the machined edges.
The amount of induced cold working or heat
distortion cannot be determined by visual or
heat distortion cannot be determined by visual
inspection, hence test results often produce
erratic and inaccurate tensile properties.

Specimens of light gauge sheet must be blanked,

sheared or die cut to the required tensile
conguration. The basic principle of shearing
causes severe deformation and distortion to the
critical specimen edges and creates even greater
variations and errors in the physical properties.
9

The ideal tensile specimen should duplicate the

pure basic metal or plastic being tested with
a total absence of tool marks, incipent cracks,
induced stresses, internal deformation or heat
distortion. Our range of sample preparation
technologies achieve these ideal requirements
and produce an almost perfect test specimen.

Metallography
www.WorldofTest.com/metallography.htm
Metallography is the science of revealing and evaluating the internal structures of materials. It is one of the most important
methods of materials research today, indispensable to the scientist as well as to the engineer. More recently, advanced materials
such as high tech metal alloys, ceramics, composites and polymers have appeared which made metallography become an
increasingly vital part of modern industry.
Through a process of cutting, mounting, grinding and polishing, a smooth surface is obtained to reach the materials true
structure. In order to achieve high preparation quality and reproducible results; a combination of Right equipment, Correct
preparation method and Right consumables which we call Total Preparation Solution, is required.

SECTIONING
CUTTING

The rst step in preparing a specimen for metallographic or microstructural analysis is to locate the area of interest. Sectioning or
cutting is the most common technique for obtaining this area of interest. Proper sectioning guarantees minimal microstructural
damage. Excessive subsurface damage and damage to secondary phases (e.g. graphite akes, nodules or grain pull-out) should
be avoided.
Sectioning can be categorized into two areas: Abrasive Cutting and Precision Wafer Cutting. Abrasive cutting is generally used
for metal specimens and is accomplished with silicon carbide or alumina abrasives in resin or resin rubber bonds. Proper blade
selection is required to minimize burning and heat generation during cutting which degrades both the specimen surface as well
as the blade cutting efciency. Precision wafer cutting is accomplished with thin diamond blades. Wafer cutting is especially
useful for cutting ceramics and minerals as well as some metallic materials.
METACUT 250 and METACUT 350 cutting machines are designed for wet cutting of large and small, regularly or irregularly
shaped workpieces of metallic, ceramic or composite materials. METACUT 250 has the capacity to cut solid sections up to
90 mm in diameter. The cutting capacity of METACUT 350 is 130 mm. The side access port permits the sectioning of extralong workpieces. METACUT cutting machines are available in Automatic(A) and Manual(M) versions. SERVOCUT model is the
perfect choice for a wide range of materials and for heavy duty cutting applications. It combines the two well proven cutting
techniques into the same machine: Chop cutting: The specimen is clamped and the cut-off wheel approaches the specimen
via a rocker arm. Table-feed cutting: Feeding the clamped specimen into a rotating cut-off wheel using a slotted feed table. The
workpiece to be cut can be accurately positioned in 3 axis which is displayed digitally on the front panel.
Precision cutting is used for precise and deformation-free cutting of Metals, Ceramics, Electronic Components, Crystals,
Composites, Biomaterials, Sintered Carbides, Minerals, etc. MICRACUT Precision Cutter has its place in virtually any
metallurgical, geological, electronics, research, biomedical or industrial laboratory. The applications are endless. MICRACUT
family of precision cutters are available in 4 different versions.

MOUNTING

After cutting the specimen, the next step is mounting. The aim of mounting is to handle small or odd shaped specimens and to
protect fragile materials, thin layers or coating during preparation as well as to provide good edge retention. Mounting produces
specimens with uniform size so that it is easier to handle in automatic holders for further preparation steps. Basically, two
metods are available: Hot Mounting and Cold Mounting. In hot mounting, the specimen is mounted under heat and pressure
with a hot mounting press. Cold mounting is preferred for samples which are sensitive to damage from heat and pressure (like
coatings, PCB, etc.) Cold mounting resins are easy to use and require mixing which is then poured into a mould and allowed
to set.
We offer Ecapress Programmable and Automatic Hot Mounting Presses as well as VACUMET Vacuum Impregnation Unit
for cold mounting.

GRINDING & POLISHING

In order to obtain a highly reective surface that is free from scratches and deformation, the specimens must be carefully grinded
and polished before they can be examined under the microscope. Qualitest offers high quality instruments and consumables
for achieving this goal.
DIGIPREP preparation systems are designed for fully automated materialographic sample preparation for consistent and
reproducible specimen quality. DIGIPREPs Automatic Head controls the force applied precisely and specimens are prepared
exactly the same way everytime, independent of operator skills.
With the ability to store and recall preparation programs on the LCD screen, same consistent results are obtained. High level
of automation improves the efciency and gives the operator free time for other tasks in the laboratory. Efciency is further
increased by adding DOSIMAT Peristaltic Dispensing Unit for automation and control of consumable consumption.
FORCIPOL Series of instruments are available as Single wheel and Dual wheel Units (200/250/300 mm wheel size). Both
single or double wheel versions are available with constant, dual or innitely variable rotating speeds with digital display. This
allows the setting of the optimum speed for each individual preparation process. When the number of specimens to be prepared
increases, FORCIPOL instruments can be tted with FORCIMAT automatic head for automation. FORCIMAT automatic head
provides high rate of sampe preparation and frees the operator from the grinding and polishing procedures

CONSUMABLES

High sample quality and reproducible results can only be achieved with high quality consumables. Selecting the right consumables
for each specic application is not just a matter of preparation qualty - it is also the best way to save time and money.
Our cutting, mounting, grinding & polishing consumables for microstructural analysis are produced to match to your specic
requirements for high preparation quality. Choosen from a wide selection, designed and tested for use on Metkon metallographic
equipments as well as on competitive units.

Impact Testers
Instrumented Pendulum Impact Testing Machine Quali-Impact
Instrumented pendulum impact tester is a high-tech product. This tester, which directly and vividly reects the force and deformation of materials under shock
loading and the relationship between force and deformation, provides reliable data for describing the whole fracture process of materials due to impact. The
equipment is widely used for the development of products and safety assessment in such elds as metallurgical steel industry, machinery manufacturing,
petroleum, shipbuilding, military industry and nuclear power. It is also the indispensable test instrument for institutions of higher learning and scientic research
units when they are conducting new material researches. The tester, which is automatically controlled, is easy to operate, safe and reliable and is highly efcient.
Technical parameters can be modied online; the recording system uses high-speed data acquisition card which can record the whole process of high-speed
loading; mechanical curves of various materials can be drawn; and the test reports can be shown and printed.
The 20MHz sampling frequency of the high-speed signal acquisition system independently developed by our company can accurately record each real signal
and draw load - time - energy curves and load - displacement - energy curves with the help of the data analysis system. The system automatically determines
the yield point Fgy under dynamic loading, maximum load Fmax, crack initiation point Fiu, crack arrest point Fa and dynamic fracture mechanics performance
indexes of KId and KJId which are within the range of ASME. The performances of materials are analyzed based on the experimental curves. The force value at
point Fgy represents the yield force. Points before Fgy belong to the elastic deformation stage of the specimen under impact loading. Once this point is exceeded, the specimen will undergo plastic deformation.
The force value at point Fmax represents the maximum force that the specimen suffers throughout the deformation. Once this point is exceeded, the crack
propagation begins or there will be stable crack propagation on the specimen. The force value at point Fiu represents the point where the crack propagation of
the specimen begins under the force (i.e. unstable propagation). The force value at point Fa represents the point where the crack propagation of the specimen
stops under the force.

Charpy Dimension Verication System - QPM 7000 Series
www.WorldofTest.com/qpm7000.htm
The Percent Shear / Lateral Expansion / Charpy Dimension Verication System - QPM 7000
Series dimension verication system allows the user to comply with the current ASTM E 23
methods for measuring percent shear fracture area. Although this can be tedious and
inaccurate. While the use of a lateral expansion gage is adequate for standard specimens,
miniature and subsize specimens often require an alternative procedure. With the QPM
system a new technology has been developed for accurate shear and lateral expansion
measurement. In addition, the system can be used for Charpy notch and other important
dimensional verication. The hardware and software are used for acquiring fracture surface
and notch images. After the image is acquired, the software is used to make measurements
in accordance with the ASTM E 23 standard. The system consists of a camera, lens,
lighting, and data acquisition software.
An accurate digitized image of the fracture surface is used for the percent shear measurement.
The brittle and ductile fracture regions are outlined and the software automatically calculates
the % shear area. In addition, the software package includes 5 equations which use the
instrumented striker characteristic load data to calculate % shear. This latter method is very
effective for materials where the brittle region is difcult to resolve.
7200 System for % Shear Determination and Charpy Dimensional Measurement with
Manual Magnication Control.
A high accuracy reticle or other calibration tool can be used for this purpose. The lateral
expansion measurement is made in accordance with ASTM E23 directly on the fracture
surface. The nal result is calculated based on the measurements made on the two
specimen halves.
Measurement of Charpy dimensions requires a telecentric lens and backlighting to achieve
high accuracy. In most cases, the notch radius is measured using magnications ~50 to 100
X (other ranges can be supplied upon request). Lower magnications are used for the
measurement of the notch depth, notch angle, and cross section.
The QPM-Line offers three models with increasing capabilities and degree of automation
(The image above illustrates the 7200/7300 models):

Fracture Image Analyzer - QualiDFIA

www.WorldofTest.com/fracture-image-analyzer.htm

include:
The measurement of the lateral expansion value of the impact fracture
The measurement of the fracture-surfaces ber rate of the impact fracture
The measurement of the fracture-surfaces ber rate of DWTT fracture
The measurement of the fracture-surfaces ber rate of DT fracture
The measurement of the crack length of the fracture-mechanics-specimens fracture

Fracture Image Analyzer - Quali-IFIA

As one of the related products of the pendulum impact tester, the Fracture Image Analyzer
Quali-IFIA is able to conduct the measurement of the fracture surface's ber content and the
lateral expansion value of the Charpy impact specimen. With the impact fracture image
analyzer and the pendulum impact tester working together, the ductile-to-brittle transition
temperature curve of the material can be directly obtained. The test indicators which can be
accomplished by the device are as follows:
The measurement of the fracture-surfaces ber fracture rate and the fracture rate of the
crystalline zone
The measurement of the fracture-surfaces lateral expansion value
The measurement of the crystalline zones area of the fracture-surface
The measurement of the specimens crack length

Resonant Fatigue Testers . Portable Testers

www.WorldofTest.com/fatigue.htm
Resonant fatigue testing machines can stress specimens or structures with a dynamic load superimposed to a static load.
The dynamic load is generated by an oscillating system (resonator) which runs in its natural frequency. The oscillating system consists of
masses and springs whereas the structure or the specimen which has to be tested is also part of.
The Resonant Fatigue Testing Machines get used to full resonance, i.e. the operating point is situated on the top of the resonance curve.
The resonator is excited by an electromagnetic system.
Taking advantage of the resonant effect, the power consumption is very low (typical 20 to 500 Watts), with the operating frequency in the
range of 50 to 300 cpm.
In combination with our Control and evaluation system and software, you can have an intelligent and easy to operate package for your
fatigue testing requirements.
Applications
Resonant Fatigue Tester Machines are very often used for fatigue tests (S/N - curves) or in the fracture mechanics for precracking and crack
propagation tests. This principle has many advantages compared to servo-hydraulic machines.
All types of tests with a high number of load cycles are benecial applications for resonant testing machines because of the high testing
frequency, and as a result very short testing time as well as very low power consumption. The additional advantage in comparison to servohydraulic systems with its actuators, valves and pumps is that maintenance is not required due to the wear resisting construction.
The resonant testing machine VIBRRO-FORTE is the latest development. The design of the VIBRO-Forte 500 is based on a strict further
development of the resonant system MAGNODYN. An ideal solution has be found to test long shape components like fasteners,
reinforcement steel bars, etc. and round and at specimens. The changeable frequency range is between 50 and 160 Hz depending on the
stiffness of the specimen. Noteworthy is the low weight of a testing machine at this high capacity
Our Resonant Fatigue Testing Machines are available in the following congurations:
1) Mikrotron Resonant Fatigue Tester Compact version, for low load range 5-20 kN
2) Testronic Resonant Fatigue Tester Mid-Capacity version, for load range of 50-250 kN
3) Vibro-Forte Resonant Fatigue Tester High Capacity version, for load ranges up to 500kN
4) CRACKTRONIC Resonant Testing Machine, A handy system for dynamic bending load applications.

Model 161
Bulge / FLC Tester
An electro hydraulic sheet metal testing machine designed to perform hydraulic cupping tests on all ferrous and nonferrous metals.
Specimens up to a size of 400 x 650 mm can be tested. In addition to the actual hydraulic forming process the design of the machine
also allows the use of ball punches (FLC) up to a diameter of 100 to 195mm.

Model 126
Ear measuring instrument
Used to obtain a numerical value of the size of the ears resulting from anisotropy in the material of cylindrical deep-drawn cups (e.g.
according to DIN 50 155). The average cup height, the height of the ears in percent and in mm can be read-off at the touch of a button
and are shown on the digital display instrument. To enable additional data processing, the test instrument can be equipped with
interfaces, such as BCD or RS 232C outputs, and linked to a printer.
Test: Earing on deep-drawn cups with an inside diameter of 15-50mm and 50-100mm

Sheet Metal . Strain Measurement

Model 126C
Ear Measuring Instrument
The second generation ear measuring instrument, Model 126 C is used in quality assurance when sheets are produced and
processed. The equipment makes it possible to evaluate the quality of the material as well as supervise the adjustment of the
processing machines.
Due to the optimized feeding process of the equipment, the short cycle period, as well as the fully automated data acquisition
and evaluation, even most extensive series of measurements are managable within a short time and no further training is
needed for its operation. It takes less than 15 seconds for the specimen to be inserted and measured! The purchase of the Ear
Measuring Instrument saved a prominent manufacturer of beverage cans money by decreasing waste products substantially.
The standardized material evaluation processes of manufacturer and supplier resulted in optimizing the quality of the material.

Model 190
Sheetmetal marking instrument
Enables the electro-chemical appli-cation of measuring grids usingappropriate marking templateswhich are available with circle
dia-meters from 2mm upward.Sheetmetal markings provide infor-mation aboutthe behaviour of sheet metal during forming. The
degree ofstrain due to elongation or compres-sion is clearly recognizable in direc-tion and size on the basis of thedeformation
of the applied measur-ing grid.
Marking templates with circular measuring grids between 2and 8mm and a marking line thicknessof 0.1mm

Erichsen-AutoGrid Fully Integrated Sheet Metal Testing System with Automatic Strain Measurement
The integration of the Sheet Metal Testing Machine with the 3D Camera System allows the drawing processes to be directly
observed through the opening of the test head. Thus enabling to combine and analyse the data results from both systems.
For this reason, at any point during testing, not only is the 3D Camera System data available, but also the corresponding Sheet
Metal Testing Machine data, i.e. drawing stroke, drawing force and sheet holder force. This procedure simplies considerably
the choice of correct image sequences and additionally assists in the interpretation of individual test results. As an additional
feature, the data evaluation software of the Sheet Metal Testing Machine displays additional information

AutoGrid Vario
The advanced AutoGrid Vario provides the Highest exibility for component analysis and in-process materials testing and allows
convenient strain analysis on samples and components in the sheet metal industry. The new AutoGrid vario has been designed
to meet our customers needs for highest exibility in the optical setup, measurement volume and local resolution. The direct,
fast, and accurate measurement is based upon the automatic evaluation of grid patterns that consist of electrochemicallymarked orthogonal lines spaced 1-5 mm. The system is able to determine a eld of strain values in the range of 0.5 % to more
than 100 % without any unambiguity. The AutoGrid systems have proven well suited for a variety of applications in deep
drawing and hydroforming as well as for different materials including aluminium alloys, stainless steel and bre reinforced
composites.
