A MODEST PROPOSAL
For reducing garbage in the Philippines and eradicate useless people
especially apathetic persons and oldster in the country,
and making them beneficial in the environment.

Mother Nature is packed with life so abundant of different beautiful outlook, fresh
air, beauteous and endless variety of flowers, marvelous sunset, astonishing clouds,
crystal clear water and other lovely things in the greatest variety. In a blink of an eye it
all vanished. Now, its just a dream of many. Todays realities- waste everywhere,
diseases, pollution and over population which causes hot climate in our country. The
oppressing hot climate makes the work of cleaning doubly hard. Im not sure, but I have
a strong presumption that people doesnt have the will to voluntarily clean our
environment.
According to the Philippine Solid Waste Management, the country
produces10,000 million tons of waste per year. And therefore it becomes a serious
environmental problem in the Philippines. Due to a growing population, the garbage is
also growing rapidly. Considering the global average of waste produce of a person per
day which is 0.3 kilogram, I can say that garbage has the capacity to become terrible
and very dangerous. It was because of the numerous people producing waste every
day and not disposing it properly.
Instead of reducing garbage and clean the surrounding, people are wasting
and making the country dreadful. This garbage creates health hazard. Piles of
uncollected garbage, filthy communal toilets, disease-carrying rats, cockroaches, and
flies have become sights. Man is turning the country into a garbage dump.
As I observed man is abusing and remains on destroying the land. I think that it
will be hard to make them change. And whatever programs that advocates for the green
environment has nothing to do to make these people change. If not given some
attention, this silent problem will absolutely kill many people. And who would be the one
to blame? Its of no doubt that all of us are ought to blame. Who will say its not me? No
one will be exempted to the consequences people made. What to do to the people who
are destroying the country? They are indeed deserved to receive punishment. And I
think of a solution, a freakish punishment which will somehow bring the people into
realization that it is better to have the kind of environment mentioned in the first
sentence of the first paragraph of this proposal.
Those men who will be caught throwing waste will clean the whole barangay
where they reside within 5-day and they will segregate those garbage. After the
segregation, the collected plastics will be for them and the rest will be put into the fires
kept on burning through sulfur. What they need to do is to eat those plastics. They will
consume these plastics for 5 days; it will serve as their food. And if they will be caught
for the second time doing the same thing, they are ought to put in the fire as a fuel. But
they will do this by themselves, slowly walk then jump into this fire will be the process of
punishment. Those who will not obey will suffer from impoverishment. This will serve as
a warning to everyone. So I think that this will pander a person to keep their surrounding
clean and beautiful.
Looking back, I saw some useless people who couldnt even help on picking a
single candy wrapper and put in a trash can. Instead, those people who are of no use
are rather contributing to the destruction of the country. They are adjuncts to people who

are using resources and producing waste. Im referring to the old people of our country.
They are not able to support the sanitation of our surroundings.
And to the old ones who are at the age of 70 and above will objectively be kill
their lives without any exemption and burry into the land. As an old person, they have a
weak body which means they will not be able to support their selves instead they will be
a liability to their family. I think my scheme would be agreeable to all for many good
reasons. For first, it will lessen the expenses of the family because they will need no
coffin. It will also reduce garbage for there will be no more use of adult diapers.
Secondly, the business income will be more profitable for there is no senior citizen to be
discounted. The pension will be an additional financial support for the family. Thirdly,
there will be no need for the farmers to loan for soil fertilizer; these old men will be used
as a fertilizer to make the soil more productive. Fourthly, apart from the reduction of
waste there will also be a reduction in population. And because cemetery need no more
there will be an increase in tree plantation. Sixthly, another great advantage of my
scheme is that this old man will be prevented from being a burden on his family. And for
the oldster they will not suffer for a long time instead they will be at peace and they will
now have their rest.
Allow me to confirm to you my intention. I am not against the oldster; in fact I am
more convenient to talk and to be with the old one. I feel glad and contented when Im
having a conversation to them. Having them lost doesnt me you dont love them.
Indeed, it is manifestation that you are concerned with them and that you do not want to
prolong their suffering. And your love will not end here, you extended it to the farthest
part of your lives but very important to you which you cannot recognize sometimes but
there beside you- ENVIRONMENT.
I think you will also realize that some people are really intended to ruin our
country and abuse its resources. What do you feel when you see them wasting our
country? It absolutely a worst feeling! This is what I feel when I look to someone leaving
their waste anywhere.
I come clean in my deepest affection for our environment that I have no other
motive than the good of my country by increasing the profit, reducing population, and
giving a chance for the new generation to taste the beauty of our country.
