"The Baghdadi Jews (who arrived from Iraq, Syria and Iran around 1796, fleeing
persecution in their native lands) were very fair and beautiful, making them ideal
candidates for the silver screen," Solomon said.
"So they were a natural choice for lead roles," he observed.
Scholars also recall Patience Cooper (1905-1983), who played the first double role of
Indian cinema in "Patni Pratap" (1923), Pramila or Esther Abraham and others.
David Abraham Cheulkar (1908-1982), better known as David, who portrayed the
benevolent "John Chacha" of "Boot Polish" (1954) and is remembered for the
song "Nanhe Munne Bachche", too was a Bene Israel. He died in Canada in 1981.
Kolkata-born Ezra Mir alias Edwin Myers (1903-1993) was the first chief of India's Film
Division, then called the Information Films of India under British rule, and is mentioned in
the Guinness Book of World Records as the producer of the largest number of
documentaries and short films.
Bunny Reuben, another Bene Israel, is a senior film journalist and author who has
chronicled the trends in Bollywood since the late 1940s and was a close friend and
publicist of legendary showman Raj Kapoor.
Reuben has penned several biographies of Bollywood personalities - the latest one
being "...and Pran", about the life and times of the screen villain Pran.
Nadira, who hailed from the Nagpada area of central Mumbai, is perhaps the only Jew
who continues today to do the odd role in television serials and cinema.
On their part, Jews - in India as well as in Israel - are fond of vintage Hindi film music.
"The 50,000-strong Indian Jews settled in Israel are perhaps the biggest fans of vintage
Bollywood music. They associate these songs with fond memories they have of their
time in India," said Solomon, who dreams of organizing a concert in Israel some day.
Mohre (1987)
Abdul is a truck driver with alcohol and depression problems so much so that he would
like to end his life. One day another truck driver shows him a newspaper advertisement
that offers help for suicide-ridden youth. Abdul decides to try them out and travels all the
way to the countryside. Once there he is joined by four other youth, including a printing
press proof-reader, Prakash Raikar; a young woman, Maya, who had been molested
and hates men, as well as two other males, which include Sunil, who is gay. They meet
with the person who placed the advertisement, a wheelchair-bound former Indian Army
Major Vishwas Sawant and his assistant, Vasu Mudaliar. Little do they know that they
have been specially chosen to die by the duo, who are not who they claim to be but are
actually escaped convicts by the names of Jagga and Badri.
Ek Ghar (1991)
Sazaye Maut (1981)
Malika Modi lives a very wealthy lifestyle with her widowed dad in India where they own
vast acres of land and businesses. When Mr. Modi suddenly passes away, he leaves all
the business's interests with his younger brother conditionally until Malika turns 25.
Shortly before she turned 25, Malika is told by a young man, Uday Jagirdar, that she is
about to get killed, and the person to kill her is none other than Uday himself. Malika
disbelieves him and runs for her life. She finds out that Uday is not chasing her but
another man, Anil Suri, an employee of her uncle's. Malika knows now that she has no
choice but to seek help from Uday, her very own paid assailant. What Malika does not
know is that Uday is not who he claims to be, but is actually a deranged former mental
patient who is accused of murder.
Aghaat (1985)
Madhav Verma (Om Puri) is a dedicated, honest, and diligent union representative. He
represents the majority of the employees in an organization, which recognizes his union.
However, there is a rival in the shape and form of Rustom Patel (Naseeruddin Shah)
who is attempting to break the union so as to establish his majority, through his
henchman Krishnan (Gopi), and will not hesitate to stoop to any level to get what he
wants. Chhotelal (Pankaj Kapoor) loses his legs in an accident, and must be
hospitalized. Krishnan takes advantage of the situation and puts pressure on Chhotelal
and his brothers (Achyut Potdar and Harish Patel) to enroll in his union, and he will get
him a higher compensation package than his regular union. Madhav must use his utmost
diligence and consistently uphold his principles as they will be put to a test before all
logic gives way to violence, anarchy, apathy, and corruption

Vijeta (1982)
Vijeta (The Victor) is the coming of age story of Angad (Kunal Kapoor). Confused like
any other teenager trying to find himself and caught in between the marital problems of
his mother Neelima (Rekha) and father Nihal (Shashi Kapoor). It is time for him to decide
what he wants to do with his life. To select a profession and be someone, Angad
chooses to become a fighter pilot with the Indian Air Force. What follows is his struggle
to become a victor both with his self and the outer world.
Angad (Kunal Kapoor) comes from a Hindu family that had pledged their eldest son to
be of the Sikh religion, and accordingly Angad had adapted to the turban. He is in
training to be a pilot for the Indian Air Force, and he is afraid of flying. He is attracted to
Anna Verghese (Supriya Pathak), who is the daughter of his flying instructor (Amrish
Puri). Angad must learn to adapt to flying, leaving his mom and dad for long periods of
time, as well as try and woo Anna.
AASTHA
Om Puri and Rekha
Manasi, a middle aged middle class woman always had the dearth of money in her life and is
never able to fulfill her heart's desires as her husband has a meager salary. But when her
daughter expresses her desires, Manasi is too pained. One day at a shoe shop, a pair of shoes
tempt Manasi but as they are overpriced she can't afford them. A lady, as a friendly gesture, offers
to pay the rest of the money. The lady then takes Manasi to a world of seductions, the glitz and
sleaze of an urban life. Somewhere along the way Manasi is led to a guilt ridden awareness of
her sexuality, an aspect that lay unrevealed. Amar, her husband, is completely unaware of the
travails of his wife. A participant in her changing sexual discernment, Amar leads a life far
removed from the one that Manasi is coerced into and entrapped by. Balancing parallel lives,
Manasi submerges into the abyss of guilt until she finds herself exposed by Amita, one of Amar's
students. Together they plan a confession by innuendo. This, Manasi concludes, is the only
chance she has to pick up the threads of her shredded life.
NISHANT
Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil, Amrish Puri, Naseeruddin Shah
This film is based on a true - life incident that occured in a village in a feudal state, the year 1945.
This village is completely controlled and dominated by a wealthy zamindar (Amrish Puri). The
villagers are in the powerful clutches of the family and pratically owned body and soul by them.
Into this feudal atmosphere comes a new school master (Girish Karnad), his wife (Shabana Azmi)
and their child. The school master gradually becomes aware of the tensions in the village. He
decides to fight back and starts talking to the peasants and other villagers and questions their
sense of utter happiness. Unrest builds up. discontent becomes visible. Why school master
decides to fight back? Does he suceed in his war? To find out watch 'NISHANT' on DVD
UTSAV
Shashi Kapoor, Rekha, Shekhar Suman, Amjad Khan, Anuradha Patel
Based on the 6th century A.D. Sanskrit play "The Golden Toy Chariot" by the famous Indian
playwright Bhasa, "Utsav" faithfully follows Bhasa's story-line. Vasantasena, a courtesan who
dances at the King Palaka's court hides in Charudatta's house while running away from the
amorous attentions of the king's brother-in-law. She falls in love with Charudatta, though he is
married and penniless. They have an affair. Meanwhile, the rightful heir to the throne - King
Palaka's brother - escapes from prison. The king's brother-in-law strangles Vasantasena when
she refuses to submit to him and leaves her for dead and Charudatta is arrested for her murder.
What happens to him and the other characters constitutes the final part of the film.
The movie like many govind nihalani movie has violence. But you hardly get to
see the blood and gory mutilated bodies. The violence is more mental, both the
sides believe in breaking down a man mentally through fear and physically
through tortures.Fear becomes an important weapon for both the sides and if
anyone is caught his limit to bear pain is tested and test is concluded only when
he hits the breaking point.
When the movie ends, it leaves us with a great respect for the men who fight
insurgents in our country.
Arvind Desai (Dilip Dhawan) is the only son of a rich businessman (Shriram
Lagoo) who deals in luxury handicrafts and products. His feelings for his father
are mixed. While he hates his dominating nature, he admires his power and lack
of scruples. He has long discussions on art and politics with a Marxist friend (Om
Puri), is seeing his father's secretary, Alice (Anjali Paigankar) and sometimes he
visits a prostitute, Fatima. Much against his wishes, his marriage is arranged to a
girl from a high-class family that has just returned from Paris much to Alice's
mother dismay who realizes that Alice was time-pass for Arvind and nothing
more.
Pestonjee (1988)
Phirojshah (Naseeruddin Shah) and Pestonjee (Anupam Kher) are two close friends.
They attempt to do everything together, and they hope that they will marry the same
day as well. Unfortunately, both go to see the same young lady, Jeroo (Shabana
Azmi), and Pestonjee ends up getting married to Jeroo. Phirojshah has been stricken
by Jeroo's beauty and decides not to marry, and takes a transfer away from the
couple. During the years, he keeps in touch with the couple by mail. While on a visit
to the couple, he finds out that Pestonjee has a mistress, and Jeroo does not know
of this. How will this effect Phirojshah's friendship with Pestonjee? Does Phirojshah
stand a chance with Jeroo?
Sahni) and his wife (Dina Patak) who decides to take on their landlord (the
awesome Amjad Khan) as he has not repaired their house in ages despite them
paying the rent regularly. They hire the services of two wacky and cunning
lawyers (Nasserudin Shah and Satish Shah) to help them win the case against
their landlord. Rohini Htaangadi(hot!) is the opposition lawyer. The court case
drags on and on for years and the lawyers milk the old couple and become rich.
The old couple is ridiculed in their housing society for fighting the landlord. The
film is an excellent comment on the housing problem in Mumbai, the apathy of
the state and the pitiable Indian judicial system. Of the actors Bhisham Sahni and
Nasserudin Shah are the best. Shah is hilarious as a corrupt lawyer with a wig
on. There are a couple of songs in the movie that are just too cool. One is a song
in praise of Mumbai but the visuals are all about poverty and human suffering
giving it a paradoxical effect. The other one is sung by frustrated lovers whose
families are at war because of the court case. The film has a very twee indie
quality about it which gives it an edge over all the pompous films being made
today(at least in my book). At times it is refreshingly and intentionally amateurish
which makes it more endearing. The only thing that works against the movie is its
length. It could have been shorter, but still an excellent film.
Sparsh (1980)
As opposed to the general notion of Indian movies, this is not a regular run-of-the-mill
film.
It is a sensitive movie, with intense performance by Naseeruddin Shah in the role of a
self-respecting visually-impaired principal of a blind school, who hates the society for
pitying people like him. He works towards making his students self-reliant. Shabana
Azmi plays a social worker who has a troubled personal life supporting him as a
volunteer. The movie depicts the relationship between the 2. The pride of the man and
the sympathies of the woman are the cause of turbulence in their relationship.
