ThefollowinginformationwasdevelopedinaccordancewithtrainingguidelinesestablishedbytheAmericanNational
StandardsInstitute(ANSIZ490.12001).Everyefforthasbeenmadetoprovidetrainingdocumentationandinformation
thatmeetstheneedsofemployersandemployeesforcompliancepurposes,aswellasprovidingrealisticapproachesto
implementationonthejobsite
The true measure of success of any training program is how effective it is in the field. In the construction industry,
conditions can change with each passing hour a successful training program will accept this fact, and will actually
embrace it. Formalized, sitdown training is an important component of the training process, and is what is being
attemptedwiththesedocumentsandvideos.Jobsitetraining,however,willbringrealeffectiveness.
It will be important to track the activities of employees after they have received this training, to be sure that the
knowledgetheyhavegainedisused,andtobesurethattheyareprovidedwiththeresourcesrequiredtoaccomplish
theirjobssafely.Thiscontinualevaluationisthedutyofthecompetentpersononsite,whoshouldbewellversedin
the job at hand, the applicable regulations, and capable of communicating effectively with his or her employees. The
trainingwillbeginintheclassroom,butshouldcontinueeverydayunderthewatchfuleyeofthecompetentperson.
Where necessary, handson training may be required to ensure that employees are completely familiar with the
proceduresandequipmenttheywillbeusing,especiallytheirpersonalfallarrestsystems.

PREPLANNINGCHECKLIST
1.Selectadateandtimeforholdingyourmeeting.
Consultthecalendartomakesureyouavoidholidays,vacations,peakworktimes,otherpossibleconflicts.
2.Selectthemeetingsite.
Considerthespacerequiredbasedontheanticipatedsizeofyouraudience.
3.Notifyallthepeopleyouwanttoattend.
Makesuretheyallunderstandtheimportanceofattendingyoursafetytrainingsession.Besuretoincludethedate,time
andlocationinyournotice.Thinkaboutinviting,asanobserverorguestspeaker,aqualifiedsafetyengineerfromyour
liabilityinsurancecompanyorunion;arepresentativefromtheNationalSafetyCouncilorOSHA/MSHA;avendoror
even a representative from your local fire or police department. This makes the meeting more interesting for your
participants. It also demonstrates to others your concerns and efforts to provide a safe work environment for your
employees.
4.Locateandchecktheoperationofaudiovisualequipment.
Reviewthevideotapessoyouarefamiliarwiththeircontents.Runthemallthewaythroughtomakesuretheyarein
goodcondition.CheckouttheVCRandthevideosettomakesure everythingworksproperly.Makesureyouhave
enoughmonitorstoaccommodateyourgroup,andmakesuretheyareplacedsoeveryonecanseeamonitor.Besureto
rewindthetapeafteryoureviewit,soitsreadytorunwhenyouare.
If any portion of your overall program is to be done with slides or overheads, make sure the slide and overhead
projectorsfunctionproperly(Itsagoodideatohavespareprojectorbulbsonhand).Checkthescreentomakesureits
ingoodcondition.Makesuretheroomyouareusingcanbedarkenedforeasyviewing.
5.Developabriefagendaforyourmeeting.
Asampleagendaisasfollows:
Callmeetingtoorder(besuretostartmeetingontime).
Introduceselfandanyguests(ifappropriate).
Makeanyspecialannouncementsrelatingtothemeeting(forinstance,recentaccidentsorincidentswithin
yourtypeofbusiness).
Announcethatashort,multiplechoicepostviewingknowledgecheckcoveringthesafetyprogramwillbe
given.ExplainthatthepostviewingcheckwillbemaintainedinpersonnelrecordsandforOSHA,MSHA,
insuranceoranyotherfederalorstateregulatoryagencies.Determineasuitablepassingpercentage70%
shouldbetheabsoluteminimum,100%wouldbebest.
Conducttheprogram.
Allowplentyoftimefordiscussionbetweeneachofthesegmentsifthereismorethanone,andafterthe
finalsegment.
Distributethepostviewingknowledgechecks;haveparticipantscompletethem.

Have the employees read the question and their answer in turn be careful with this approach, as
manyemployeescangetnervousinfrontofagroup.
o Read the questions to the group, have them answer either as a group, or choose one who indicates
they have the answer this puts less pressure on the employees, and can help generate more
discussion.
o Be prepared to discuss the meaning and intent of the questions, and the fact that a safer answer is
alwaysbetterthanstrictcompliance.

Asyouknow,mostpeoplearereluctanttobethefirsttospeakoutinagroupsituation.Asthegroupleader,youmay

howtheregulationswillaffectthewayworkistobecompleted.Beawareofcompanyorjobsiterequirements(suchas
100%fallprotectionrules)thatmayneedtobeimplementedbeyondwhatisdiscussedinthesematerials.
Beforerunningthetape:
Besuretoexplaintoeveryonethatashortknowledgecheckwillfollowtheprogram.Employeesshouldunderstand
that its necessary that you record the scores in the event OSHA wishes to examine your training records. OSHA
requiresproofofthefactthatemployeeshavebeentrainedinbasicsafetyrulesandprocedures.Thischeckisnotan
employeeevaluation.Thepurposeofthecheckistoprovidetheemployerwithvalidationoftraininginbasicsafety
awarenessinformationasrequiredbylaw.
Beforebeginningthetape,trytogetsomeoftheaudiencetotalkaboutsteelerectionexperiencestheyhaveeitherhad,or
havesomefirsthandinformationabout.Askthemwhattheyveheardonthejoboronthestreetaboutwhatthese
newrulesareallabout.Oneofthebestwaystolearnisfromtheexperiencesofothers.Andtheretellingofactual
experiencefrequentlycarriesmorecredibilitythanformallypresentedlessons.Justbecarefultocontrolthediscussions
andnotletthemturnintoaramblingcanyoutopthisstorytellingsession.

Iron workers deal with similar dangers and problems everywhere in the world. This video, when used correctly,
helpsaddresssomeofthoseproblems.NewsstoriesaswellasOSHAandinsuranceinvestigationsrevealstriking
similaritiesinthetypesofseriousinjuriesandaccidentsthatoccurinsteelerectionwork.Whatalsosurfacesinthese
investigationsishowmanyofthedangerscanbeanticipatedandavoided.
Avoiding life threatening accidents is often the result of developing and enforcing common sense work habits.
Always wearing and using all of the prescribed PPE is common sense. Never walking under a suspended load is
commonsense.Securingladdersandinstallingsafetycablesaroundopensidesiscommonsense.Yettoooften,in
the rush to get a job done, these little things are overlooked. And thats exactly when a serious or fatal accident
happens.
Therearenoimpressivegranitememorialsanywherethathonorironworkersinjureddisabledorkilledinthelineof
duty. The reward is the privilege of returning home to a family every day. Thereward is in doing an honorable,
decentpayingjobwellandsafely.Savingafewminutesbynothookinguporbyjumpingacrossapileofbeamsto
doarigginghookup,failingtosecureashakylookingtrailerloadwiththecranebeforeyoureleasetheloadbinders
maysaveafewsecondsoftime.Butifyouguesswrong,thepersonbringingthebadnewstoyourwifeandkidsor
parents will wish they had never met you. Telling someone that a loved one has been crippled or died in an
avoidableaccidentisdevastating.Youneverwanttobethepersondeliveringthebadnews.Andyoucertainlydont
wanttobetheonethebadnewsisabout.
ANationalSafetyCouncilstudyrevealedthatforevery330littleriskstaken,(alittleriskcouldbeanythingfromnot
usingataglinewhereyoushould,tojumpingdownfromatruckbedinsteadofusingtheDOTbars),29injurieswill
occur. Some of the injuries will be little scrapes or cuts or sprains. Some may be as serious as a broken bone or
something else that will require professional medical help. And on average, 1 of those risks will result in a fatal

itsafelyandefficiently.
TherearetwomainbenefitsforMultipleLiftRigging.
1)Bymakingfewerlifts,thenumberofcraneswingsisdecreased.Thisreducesexposureforworkersonthe
groundtooverheadloads.
2)Fewerliftsreducetotaltimeonthestructureforironworkersandalsolimitthenumberofincomingloads.
Asaresult,workersafetyandproductivitycanbeincreased.However,itsimportanttorememberthatMultipleLift
RiggingProceduresarenowspecificallyregulated,andtheprocedurehassomeofitsownhazards.

It is imperative, especially with hazards as common as falls, that sitespecific training be conducted, as well as
booktrainingprovidedinamoreformaltrainingenvironment.Thiscoursewasdesignedtoaddresssomeof
the most common hazards and solutions in a generic sense, but only trained personnel and Competent Persons
onsitecantrulyknowalloftherequirementsthatmayhavetobeemployedinaspecificarea.
I.SixCommonHazardsAssociatedwithMultipleLiftRigging
Aswithanythinginourindustry,ifriggingisnotdoneproperlyitcanbedangerous.Thereismoretobeingsafe
thanjustpayingattention.Theriggers,craneoperator,andironworkerconnectorsneedtoworktogetherasateam
andwatchoutforoneanother.
1. Steelmembersrollingoverisoneofthemostfrequentanddangeroushazardswhenrigging.Mostoftenthis
is due to improper cribbing, members being snagged by rigging, or being knocked over by equipment or
otherpersons.Thisdangeroussituationcanresultincrushingoramputationinjuriestoarms,hands,legs,
andfeet.
2. Deathorseriousinjurymaybecausedbymembersfalling.Thiscanbeduetoriggingfailurefromoverload,
improperriggingpractices,faultyrigging,orfailuretoproperlyseatrigginginhooks.Hoistingequipment
can fail for several reasons: rigging overload, improper set up, or mechanical failure. This can result in
membersfalling,craneboomcollapse,orpossiblycausingthecranetooverturn.
3. Beamsrotatingorspinningexcessively.Thiscanknockunsuspectingironworkerscausingseriousdamage.
Worse,abumpcancauseironworkerstofalloffthebuildings.
4. Contactingpowerlinesisthefourthhazardyoumustrecognize.Thiscanresultindeathorseriousinjury.
Cranes or rigging contacting power lines is the number one killer of riggers and others who work around
cranes.
Remember:neitherequipmentnorpersonnelmaycomewithintenfeetofapowerline.Ifthoselinescarryover
50,000volts,increaseyourseparatingdistance.Checkwithyoursupervisorifyouareunsureoflinevoltagesin
yoursite.
5. Windyconditions.Windcancauseloadstodriftand/ormoveunexpectedly.Windalsoaddsweighttothe
load.
6. Hardtoseeorinaccuratecranehandsignals.Radioswithweakbatteriesordamagedconnectionscanmake
communication extremely difficult for blind lifts. Misunderstood signals result in serious injury for
ironworkerseveryyear.

Riggersshouldhavethefollowingpersonalprotectiveequipment:hardhat,gloves,safetyglasses,workbootsanda
proper shirt and workpants. In addition, the rigger should have a rigging card that lists the capacities of the
equipment. Keep this reference in your hardhat or wallet. See your supervisor if you dont have a card or dont
knowthecapacitiesofyourriggingequipment.
2.InspectYourEquipment
Atthestartofyourdayorshift,inspecteachpieceofriggingequipmentthatyoullbeusing.Thisincludesallslings,
hooksandshackles.Youshouldlookatthefollowingareasforwearordamage:
WireRopeSlingsorChokers:
Never use a sling that shows signs of excessive kinking, crushing, broken or cut strands, core protrusion,
corrosion,birdcaging,orbrokenwires.
Hooks:
Alwaysinspectthesafetylatchestomakesuretheyareingoodworkingorder.Alwaysensuresafetylatches
on hooks are functioning, never modify the safety latches on hooks, except as allowed by OSHA and
designated by your supervisor. Sorting hooks, or pelican hooks are designed to be used without a safety
latch.Butremember,sortinghooksshouldnotbeusedforgeneralhoisting;theyareforsortingandshaking
outonly.Lookforwearinthesaddleofthehook.Checkforcracksortwistingofthehookbody.Besureto
examinethethroatopening.Thethroatwillopen,orenlarge,ifahookhasbeenoverloadedorifitsbegun
toweaken.
Shackles:
Allpinsmustbestraightandscrewpinsmustbefullyseated.Cotterpinsmustbeusedwithallroundpin
shackles. If there is wear in the crown or pin of more than 10% of the original diameter, then the shackle
mustbedestroyed.Note:Donotuseascrewpinshackleiftheloadhasthepossibilityofrolling.Thiscould
causethepintounscrewandfail.
NOTE:Youshouldimmediatelyremoveanyriggingfromserviceifyouhaveanydoubtsastoitssafety.Nevertryto
getonemoreliftormaketemporaryrepairsbeforeremovingadefectivepieceofrigging.Youmusttakethepieceoutof
service.Failuretodosocouldresultindeathoraseriousinjury.Ifyouhaveanydoubtastotheconditionofapieceof
rigging,showittoyoursupervisor.Remember,OSHAregulationsprohibittheuseofdefectiverigging.
3.OrganizedandCleanLaydownArea
Inordertoperformmultiplelifts,youmusthaveclearaccesstoallthemembersinthelaydownarea.Organizingthe
piecesmakeseveryonesjobeasierandsafer.Thatswhatmakesthesortingandshakingoutprocesssoimportant.
1.Makesuretheresenoughcribbing,ordunnage.Andmakesureitsstrongenoughtosupporttheweight
youllbelandingonit.Usingmakeshiftsupportscancausebeamstooverturn.Thiscanresultincrushing
injuriestolegs,feet,andarmsforyouandyourcoworkers.Whenstackinglayersofjoistordecking,the

2.Storageandstagingareasshouldbeasdryandlevelaspossible.Keepstacksandthecenterofgravityas
lowaspossible.Tallstacksraisethecenterofgravityandlimitvisibilityandstability.Joistbundlesshould
notbestackedmorethantwolevels.Deckbundlesshouldnotexceedfourorfivelevels,dependingonthe
widthofthedecking.
3.Thefinalstepinorganizingyourlaydownareaistomarkthecenterlineofallbeamsbeforethestartof
hoisting.Thishelpskeepthebeamlevelduringthehoistandcanreduceextraworkanddangerforthe
connectors.Itwillspeeduptheentirejobandmakeitsafer.Often,onepersonwhoispayingattentionand
planningaheadcanrigfasterthantwopeoplewhoarenot.

5.KnowtheCapacityoftheRiggingEquipmentYouareUsingandNeverExceedit.
ForMultiplelifting,theriggingassemblymustbemanufacturedbyawireroperiggingsupplier.Itwillhavea5to1
safetyfactoronallthecomponents.Sincethisisaspecializedtypeoflift,theriggingmustmeetthespecific
requirementsforyourmultipleliftprocedure.Inotherwords,youmustuseanapprovedriggingassembly,notjust
hookmultipleloadsonthesamehook.
Checkyourcardtodeterminetheloadcapacityofallchokersandhooksyouwillbeusingthatday.Makesureyou

letterW.Thefirstnumbertellsyouthewebsizeininches,andthesecondnumbertellsyouthemembersweight
perfoot.
Forexample,youcanseethatthebeamweighs160poundsperfoot.Ifits38feetlong,multiply38by160tofigure
thebeamsweight:6,080pounds.Formultipleliftrigging,youmustfiguretheweightofallthepiecesbeinglifted.
Basicriggingrequirestheknowledgeofseveraltypesofhitches.Thechokerhitchisprimarilyusedformultiplelift
riggingbecauseofitschokingorbitingcharacteristicsthatpreventslipping.Cautionshouldbeexercisedwhen
usingnylonorsyntheticslingsonsteelmembers.Topreventcuttingtheslings,usesoftenersifnecessary.
You will usually maintain a straight vertical angle on the choker hitch, but be aware that reducing the angle will
reducethathitchesloadcapacity.Remember,achokerhitchsmaximumstrengthisonly75percentofasingleleg

couldslipoutandfall.Itiscriticaltomaintainthesevenfootdistancebetweenitemsinamultiplelift;therefore,the
loadmustberiggedlevel.Remembertomarkyourcenterlines.Ifitssiderigged,theloadtwistsoveruponlifting.
Thiscanmakeitdifficultfortheconnectors;theyhaveahardertimepositioningthememberforconnecting.Proper
riggingsavestime,helpsyourfellowworkersdotheirjobandkeepseverybodysafe.Whenyoureriggingjoistsor
joistgirders,checktheirweightsintheSJIcatalog.Ifthereisquestion,contactthejoistsupplier.
6.UseClearHandsignals:
Riggersusehandsignalseverydayforcommunicationwiththecraneoperators.Itisimportantforeveryonessafety,
thatyouknowthesesignalsandhowtoproperlyusethem.
Thefollowingisareviewofthecranehandsignals.Herearesomeimportanttipstofollow.Alwayskeepyourhand
and arm extended away from your body for easy viewing by the crane operator. Make clear, definite signals and
only have one person signaling at a time. Remember, the operator has the right to stop the crane if poor signals
threatenthesafetyofothers.Talkwiththeoperatorbeforeliftingandseehowbesttocommunicate.Itsallabout
teamwork! If the distances are too great or youre working out of sight, make sure you use radios to maintain
constant contact. This means talking to the operator with continuous, clearly spoken directions. If you arent
communicatingwiththecraneoperatorheshouldstop.Theprideandcareyoutakeinyoursignalswillmakeevery
onesjobsaferandeasier.Askyoursupervisorifanyareunclearorconfusing.
III.Rules&ProceduresforSafelyRiggingaMultipleLift
SafetyRulesforMultipleLiftingthatMustbeFollowed:
First,youmaynotrigmorethanfivemembersinasinglelift.
Second,theremustbeatleastsevenfeetbetweeneachriggedmember.
Third, do not make lifts in excessively windy conditions. You should check with your supervisor and the crane
operator.Notethatvariouslocalitiesandcranescanhavedifferentwindspeedlimits.
Fourth, a safe route to swing loads should be available. Avoid swinging loads over other workers and occupied
buildings.Attimes,bothriggersandconnectorswillhavetoworkundersuspendedloads.Youmustalwaysremain
alertwhenworkingunderanyload.
Fifth, only beams and some open web joists can be rigged for Multiplelifts. Other materials such as columns or
deckingcannotbehandledsafelyusingamultiplelift.
Sixth,controlledloadlowering,orpowerdown,mustbeusedbythecraneoperatorwhenevertheloadisoverthe
connectors. Be aware that OSHA prohibits use of cranes for multiple lift rigging where it is contrary to the crane
manufacturersrecommendationsandspecifications.
Ofcoursethetotalload,includingtheriggingassembly,cannotexceedtheratedcapacityofthecraneorjib.
Remember,thejibcapacityreducesgreatlyastheradius,ortheloadsdistancefromthecrane,increases.

member.
Hookonthenextmemberinthesequence,againhangingthebulltailhookontheXside.
Makesureyouhavethecorrectorderofmembers beforeyouletthesteelleavetheground.Delaysandincreased
hazardsarecreatedifmembersreachtheconnectorsinthewrongorder.Remembertoconsulttheerectiondrawings
forthepropersequencing. Theorderintheliftisthereverseorder ofconnecting.Inotherwords,thefirstortop
piecewillbethelastpieceset.
Useataglinewheneverpossible.Tieaknotthatwillremainsecure,suchasahalfhitchorbowline.Theworkersup
topmayhavetousethetagline,too,soyoudontwantittocomeloose.Andkeepthelineshort,about36feet,soit
doesntwhiparoundorgettangledonsomethingduringalift.

3.AreadeAlmacenamientoLimpiayOrganizada.
Para poder realizar levantamientos multiples, tu debes de tener libre acceso a todos los miembros en el area de
almacenamiento.Organizarlaspiezashaceeltrabajodetodosmasfacilyseguroparatodos.Estoesloquehaceel
procesodesepararyacomodartanimportante.
1. Asegurate que tienes suficiente acunamiento o maderos. Y aegurate que es lo suficientemente fuerte para
soportarelpesodeloquevasasentarenestos.Elusodesoportesimprovisadospuedecausarquelasvigas
se caigan. Esto puede resultar en lesiones de aplastamiento a piernas, pies, brazos y manos a ti y a tus
companerosdetrabajo.Cuandoestacandocapasdecabrillasolaminas,elacunamientodebecolocarsepara
proveer estabilidad y crear el espacio para poder amarrarlas o estrobarlas. Manten todas las capas
superioresdelosmaderosalineadasconlasdeabajoparaproveerunsoportesolidohastaarriba.Aunconel
acunamientoadecuado,losaccidentespuedenocurrirsilascargassedesplazanporcondicionesdeunsuelo

2. Areasdealmacenamientoyacunamientodebendeestartansecasyniveladascomoseapossible.Mantenlas
pilas y el centro de gravedad tan bajo como puedas. Pilas altas elevan el centro de gravedad, limitan la
estabilidad y visibilidad. Los paquetes de cabrillas no se pueden estacar en mas de dos niveles y los
paquetes de lamina no se pueden estacar en mas de cuatro o cinco niveles dependiendo del ancho de la

3. El paso final en la organizacion del area de almacenamiento es es marcar el centro a las viguetas antes de
empezaralevantarlas.Estoayudaraamantenerlaviganiveladaduranteellevantamientoypuedereducir
el trabajo extra y paligro para los conectores. Esto agilizara todo el trabajo y lo hara mas seguro.
Comunmente,unapersonaqueponeatencionyplaneaafuturopuedeamarraroestrobarmasrapidoque
dosquenolohacen.
Si tu area de trabajo esta organizada debe de ser facil la localizacion de piezas de acero y el orden en que
seranlevantadas.Revisaestocontusupervisor.
4.CuidadoconLineasdeElectricidadCercanas
Losamarradoresdebendecuidarsedelaslineasdeelectricidadcercanas.Mantentodoelequipoypersonalaporlo
menos10piesdetodaslaslineasdeelectricidad,siesaslineascarganmasde50,000voltiosincrementaladistancia,
checacontusupervisorsinoestassegurodelvoltajedelaslineasentuareadetrabajo.
5.ConocelaCapacidaddelEquipodeAparejosqueEstasUsandoyNuncalaExcedas

enlaseslingasusaprotectoresenlosbordessiesnecesario.
Tu debes de mantener un angulo vertical recto en un amarre ahorcado (choker hitch), pero debes de saber que
reducirelanguloreducelacapacidaddecargadelestrobo.Recuerdaquelamaximafuerzadeunamarreahorcado
esdesoloel75%deldeunapatasencilla(singleleghitch).Aseguratedeconsiderarestoademasdelangulo.
Errorestipicosalamarrar,soneltenerunextremodelacargamaspesado,estosignificaquelacargaseinclinaraal
levantarla y la carga se podria deslizar y caer. Es critico mantener la distancia de 7 pies entre piezas en un
levantamientomultiple,asiquelacargadebedeamarrarsedemodoqueselevantenivelada.
