All the seeds produced by a plant do not grow into new plants because only ripe and healthy
seeds which get all the favourable conditions grow into plants.
Dispersal of seeds is necessary because seeds have to be spread out in a large enough area so
that at least some of the seeds will get suitable conditions and grow up into adult plants.
Grains are stored in a dry and well- ventilated room because Moulds grow easily in cold and
damp places.
We should not put out an electrical fire with water because water conducts electricity and it can
give a heavy shock or may even cause death.
We should use sand and not water when there is fire at a petrol pump because oil , being lighter
than water float on top and keep burning.

Ex. 9 Answer in detail :
Q1.What are the different parts of a seed?
Ans. The 3 different parts of a seed are :1. Seed coat : The hard covering of a seed is called the seed coat.
2. Seed leaves or cotyledons :The leaves inside the seed is known as seed leavesor cotyledons .
3. Embryo: The baby plant inside the seed is called the embryo.
Q2. How do good conditions help a seed to grow?
Ans. A seed needs good soil which is rich in nutrients. It needs air, warmth and water. Air is needed
by the seed to breathe. Warmth makes the seed active. Water softens the food and also the seed coat so
that the baby plants can break open the seed coat and can grow.
Q3. What are the stages of germination?
Ans. The stages of germination are:
1.The embryo root pushes through the seed coat and grow downwards into the soil.

2. The root start growing and the cotyledons are pulled upwards.
3. The baby plant called seedling start coming out of the cotyledons.
4. The stem grow longer and the first leaves start developing.
5. The leaves develop completely and the cotyledons fall off.
6. The process of germination is then complete.
Q4. Write a short note on how diseases spread through food.
Ans. Diseases are spread through food in many different ways.
Germs grow on garbage and dirt. Flies sit on these and carry the germs that stick to their legs.
When these flies sit on uncovered food, the germs are left on the food and contaminate it.
There are germs in the dust and soil. When this dust and soil is blown away by wind and settle
on food, the food gets contaminated.
When people suffering from intestinal disease do not wash their hands properly after going to
toilet, the germs are likely to be present on their hands and under the nails. When they touch
food, the germs from their hand get transferred and contaminate the food.
Any person eating contaminated food is likely to fall ill.
Q5. Give three ways to stop diseases from spreading.
Ans. Three ways to stop diseases from spreading are:
By washing your hands before eating to remove the dirt and germs on your hands.
By drinking pure and clean water.
By getting yourself vaccinated.
Q 6 .What are the properties of a liquid ?
Ans. Properties of a liquid are :1) Liquids have a definite volume, but no definite shape .
2) The force of attraction between the molecules of a liquid is little less.
3) There is some space between the molecules.
4) They can be poured.
5) They flow from higher level to lower level.
Q 7 . What precautions should you take when riding in a car?
Ans: Precautions to be taken when riding in a car are listed below.

Always wear the seat belt.

Do not play the radio/stereo loudly.
Do not disturb the driver.
Do not put your head or your arm out of the window.
Look out for traffic while getting down from the vehicle.

Q 8 .What should be done if a persons clothes catch fire?

Ans: If a persons clothes catch fire , do not allow him to run around in panic. Remember the
words Stop ,Drop and Roll. Ask him to stop and drop to the ground .wrap him in a blanket to cut
off the supply of oxygen and roll him on the ground . It will put out the fire.
Q 9 Write a short note on the cerebrum and draw a diagram.
Ans. The cerebrum forms the largest part of the brain . Its surface has deep folds. It receives
messages from the sense organs and sends back messages about what has to be done. The
cerebrum is the center of learning , memory, intelligence and reasoning.
Q10 How do the eyes help us to see?
Ans. We can see an object when light bounces off the object and enters the eyes through a
clear, transparent area called the cornea. Behind the cornea there is the iris, which determines
the eye colour. In the center of iris there is the pupil. Behind the pupil is a clear lens which

focuses on picture on the retina. The nerves on the retina send the messages to big nerve called
optic nerve and carries messages to the brain. The brain understands and tells what you have
seen.
Q11 How should you take care of the skin?
Ans. We should take care of our skin in the following way.
1 We should keep our skin clean by washing it with soap and water.
2 We should wear clean clothes.
3 We should never ignore an injury to the skin .
4 We should apply an antiseptic to prevent infection.
