All the seeds produced by a plant do not grow into new plants because only ripe and healthy
seeds which get all the favourable conditions grow into plants.
Dispersal of seeds is necessary because seeds have to be spread out in a large enough area so
that at least some of the seeds will get suitable conditions and grow up into adult plants.
Grains are stored in a dry and well- ventilated room because Moulds grow easily in cold and
damp places.
We should not put out an electrical fire with water because water conducts electricity and it can
give a heavy shock or may even cause death.

than water float on top and keep burning.

prevented by including fish liver oil, eggs, milk and milk products in the diet and exposure to sunlight.

Ans. When a large number of people living in an area become ill with the same disease at the same
time it is called an epidemic.

Ans. Fish breathe oxygen dissolved in water.
Q28 .What is thermal conductivity?
Ans. Ability of molecules of a substance to carry heat is called its thermal conductivity.
Q 29. What is corrosion?
Ans. When iron is exposed to humid air, it rusts and a red layer can be seen on it .This is called
corrosion.

Ans. Combustion can be useful in many ways.
1 It is used in steam engine by the burning of coals.
2 Dung cakes and wood are burnt for cooking and for bon-fire.
Q. 31 Why do you think accidents occur and what can be done to stop them from happening?
Ans: Accidents are caused by carelessness . Accidents can be avoided by following basic safety rules.
Q33 .Why should we use sand and not water when there is a fire at a petrol pump ?
Ans: We should use sand and not water when there is a fire at a petrol pump because oils , being
lighter than water float on top and keep burning.
Q-34. How do fish breathe?
Ans. Fish breathe through gills situated on either side of their head . when fish take water in their
mouth , oxygen dissolved in water is absorbed in the gills and carbon dioxide is given out.
Q35. Why do animals need to move?
Ans. Animals need to move in search of food , to build or find shelter and to protect themselves from
enemies.
Q36. How does a frog move?
Ans. Frogs use their webbed feet to swim in water and their hind legs to jump on land.
Q37. What are the different ways in which snakes can move ?
Ans. Snakes do not have limbs they move their scales back and forth to move forward . some snakes
can swim in water and some can also climb trees.
Q38. How do humans use their limbs?
Ans.Humans have two pair of limbs. They use their lower limbs or legs for standing , walking and
running . They use their upper limbs or arms for holding and working with objects
Q 39 Name any three bones of the skeletal system.
Ans. Jaw bone, vertebra and femur are some of the bones in the skeletal system.
Q40 What are the ligaments?

Ans. The skeleton gives shape and support to our body. It also protects our internal organs.
Q 46. What is a ball-and socket joint? Where do we find these in the human body?
Ans. A ball-and-socket joint allows a circular movement. One bone that ends in a ball fits into the
socket of another bone . Ball-and-socket joints are found in shoulder and hips.
Q47. What is the difference between voluntary and involuntary muscles?
Ans. Some muscles which we can control their movement at our will are called voluntary muscles.
Some other muscles which are not under our control are called involuntary muscles.
Q48. How do muscles move bones?
Ans. Muscles pull the bones and help them to move. Muscles can contract and relax.

Ans. Reflex actions are very fast involuntary actions controlled by the spinal cord.
Q 51 How does the tongue help us to see?
Ans. Taste-buds on different parts of the tongue pick up different tastes and help us to taste the food.
Ex. 9 Answer in detail :
Q1.What are the different parts of a seed?
Ans. The 3 different parts of a seed are :1. Seed coat : The hard covering of a seed is called the seed coat.
2. Seed leaves or cotyledons :The leaves inside the seed is known as seed leavesor cotyledons .
3. Embryo: The baby plant inside the seed is called the embryo.
Q2. How do good conditions help a seed to grow?
Ans. A seed needs good soil which is rich in nutrients. It needs air, warmth and water. Air is needed
by the seed to breathe. Warmth makes the seed active. Water softens the food and also the seed coat so
that the baby plants can break open the seed coat and can grow.
Q3. What are the stages of germination?
Ans. The stages of germination are:
1.The embryo root pushes through the seed coat and grow downwards into the soil.
2. The root start growing and the cotyledons are pulled upwards.
3. The baby plant called seedling start coming out of the cotyledons.
4. The stem grow longer and the first leaves start developing.
5. The leaves develop completely and the cotyledons fall off.
6. The process of germination is then complete.
Q4. Write a short note on how diseases spread through food.
Ans. Diseases are spread through food in many different ways.
Germs grow on garbage and dirt. Flies sit on these and carry the germs that stick to their legs.
When these flies sit on uncovered food, the germs are left on the food and contaminate it.
There are germs in the dust and soil. When this dust and soil is blown away by wind and settle
on food, the food gets contaminated.
When people suffering from intestinal disease do not wash their hands properly after going to
toilet, the germs are likely to be present on their hands and under the nails. When they touch
food, the germs from their hand get transferred and contaminate the food.
Any person eating contaminated food is likely to fall ill.
Q5. Give three ways to stop diseases from spreading.
Ans. Three ways to stop diseases from spreading are:
By washing your hands before eating to remove the dirt and germs on your hands.
By drinking pure and clean water.
By getting yourself vaccinated.

4) They can be poured.
5) They flow from higher level to lower level.
Q 7 . What precautions should you take when riding in a car?
Ans: Precautions to be taken when riding in a car are listed below.
focuses on picture on the retina. The nerves on the retina send the messages to big nerve called
optic nerve and carries messages to the brain. The brain understands and tells what you have
seen.
Q11 How should you take care of the skin?
